Introduction

In this exercise, you will go through the process of merging Femap models using both Femap Neutral files and the File, Merge command.

This exercise requires that you have a good working knowledge of Femap. The steps you will use in this exercise are:

Set Femap Preferences to use Inches as the Geometry Scale Factor.

Open an existing Femap Model file of an aircraft frame subassembly and a second Femap Model file containing a frame section.

Merge the Lower Left Frame model into the Frame assembly model by exporting a Femap Neutral File of the Lower Left Frame, and then import that file into the Frame assembly model.

Merge the Lower Left Frame into the Frame Assembly using the File, Merge command.

The preferences and units used in this exercise are:

Solid Geometry Scale Factor: Inches Force: lbf Pressure: psi Density: lbf/in3

Step 1: Start Femap and Set Preferences

Start Femap v11.1.1

From either a desktop icon, or from the Windows Start menu, select the icon for Femap v11.1.1.

Set your Femap preferences for the correct Geometry Scale Factor. The Geometry Scale Factor is number of length units per meter

used by Parasolid.

Select the command, File, Preferences.

In the Preferences dialog box, select the Geometry/Model tab.

Under the Geometry Preferences option group, set the Geometry Scale Factor to Inches.

Click OK to apply the changes and close the dialog box.

Step 2: Open an existing Femap Model file of an aircraft frame subassembly and a second Femap Model file containing a frame section.

Open a Femap model file of a frame subassembly.

Open the Femap model file, Ex25 – Lower Frame Assembly. This file and the second model file will be located in either the Femap 101 class files, Geometry folder or a different folder indicated by your instructor.

Open a Femap model file of a frame.

Open the Femap model file, Ex25 – Lower Left Frame.

Close any other open model file, except for the two (2) model files you just opened.

Tile the window display so that both model files are opened side-by-side.

Select the command, Window, Tile Vertical.

Your Femap graphics pane layout should appear as below:

Step 3: Merge the Lower Left Frame model into the Frame assembly model by exporting a Femap Neutral File of the Lower Left Frame, and then import that file into the Frame assembly model.

Export a Femap Neutral File (.neu file) of the Lower Left Frame.

Click in the graphics pane of the Lower Left Frame model, or, alternatively, click on the tab for the model, Ex25 – Lower Left Frame.modfem.

Select the command, File, Export, Femap Neutral.

In the Write Model to Femap Neutral dialog box, enter the File Name as Lower Left Frame. The .neu file name extension is automatically added to the file name.

Click Save to continue with saving the Femap Neutral File.

Fill the Graphics pane by pressing the ctrl+a hotkey (View, Autoscale, Visible command).

Note that because the option for ID Offset was not used, merged entities with the same entity ID that previously existed in the Lower Frame Assembly were overwritten causing the model to be “corrupted”.

Press the ctrl+z hotkey (Tools, Undo command) to undo the import of the Femap Neutral File.
