The California condor exhibit, soon to be only

the third condor exhibit in a zoo, will be built

in conjunction with the new fox exhibit and

The Wave. Construction will start in November

2007, following final approval from the Historic

Landmarks Commission and receipt of permits

from the Building Department. We anticipate

that construction of this first phase will take a

year, completing construction in fall 2008. At

that point, the second phase of construction

will commence to build a 9,000 square foot

education facility/animal kitchen (Discovery

Pavilion) and create a new series of exhibits

with the renovation of the langur-lemur-

alligator complex (Asian habitat).

The need to continue fundraising for The Zoo

Campaign – Wild California still exists. The quality

of your Zoo is a direct result of the generosity

and enthusiasm of friends like you. Those who

recognize the value of the Zoo to present and

future generations of Central Coast residents

are committed, as we are, to making the Santa

Barbara Zoo the best zoo in the region. My

deepest and heartfelt thanks for making 2006

another great year in the history of the zoo.

I hope you will join us in 2007 for another

outstanding year!

Every year at the Santa Barbara Zoo, we are

able to realize more of the potential of this

wonderful institution thanks to the generosity

of our many donors, members, and friends.

2006 was no exception. Great weather and

the new Crawford Family Penguin House exhibit

helped us attract more than 460,000 visitors

and share our passion for the world’s wildlife.

A solid marketing and advertising program

reminded residents of the Central Coast that

a visit to the Zoo is a rewarding and inspiring

experience.

The Zoo Campaign – Wild California continued

to raise funds that will help us realize our

vision for new exhibits, expanding educational

opportunities, and enhancing the guest

experience. And our membership grew to

more than 14,000 households, reaching

families and friends from San Luis Obispo all

the way to Los Angeles.

In December we received a wonderful holiday

gift from the Santa Barbara City Planning

Commission. following more than three

years of studies, research, and meetings, the

Commission approved five significant projects

in the Zoo’s master plan: Condor Country, the

Crawford Family Channel Island Fox exhibit, The

Wave (new hilltop restaurant/restrooms), the

Discovery Pavilion, and the new Asian habitat.

In 2006, the Santa

Barbara Zoo

continued to reach

out not only to our

own community but

in large measure to

our neighbors to

the south. Overall,

membership now

exceeds 14,000 households, approximately

40% of which come from Ventura County. We

are, in fact, becoming a regional Zoo, and the

enthusiasm of our professional staff continues

to improve the facility and programs for all to

enjoy. Attendance exceeded 460,000 people,

our fourth largest year on record!

Our executive leaders expect very high

standards to make the Zoo among the best

of its size in the country. They expect a lot

from our staff who continue to work tirelessly

to achieve this distinction. Their dedication

and passion is inspirational. In addition, we

would be remiss if we didn’t recognize all of

our loyal volunteers who work countless hours

at events such as the incredibly popular Boo at

the Zoo. You make this entire endeavor truly a

community effort.

Now we turn our attention and look forward to

new beginnings in 2007. The City certified our

environmental documents and approved our

master plan which will allow us to commence

construction in the fall on our long awaited

California condor exhibit. In addition, we will

be renovating the Channel Island fox exhibit,

converting the existing children’s playground

into a new home for the desert tortoise, and

providing for a new and improved hilltop guest

service facility. We are able to take these steps

because of your response to our Wild California

campaign. At year’s end, we had received

pledges and donations totaling almost $7.6

million (63% of our total campaign goal of

$12.1 million). Thank you for helping us make

all of this a reality.

I invite you to visit the Zoo and see and enjoy

what you and your neighbors have created.

The Santa Barbara Zoo, with a long tradition of

volunteer and community support, continues

to hold a special place in the hearts of many

Santa Barbarans. We’re very excited about all

we are accomplishing at the Zoo.

Animals in our Back yard

Our conservation and research programs made

significant advances in 2006. The year’s activities

validated our role in both conservation and

research with many important field projects and

the research that was produced. We had many

outstanding achievements.

The entire staff increased its understanding

of the Zoo’s role in conservation, especially

since many had the opportunity for hands-on

support of our conservation work in the field or

at an on-site event. Estelle Sandhaus joined the

Santa Barbara Zoo as our new Conservation

and Research Coordinator, and brought with

her an impressive array of knowledge, skills,

and abilities that added to our resources.

The Zoo’s partnerships supporting local

conservation efforts expanded. The number

of staff hours spent both in the field and in

support of field activities reached a new high

of 1188 hours. Unlike last year, the greatest

number of hours in 2006 was spent working

with the California condor (776 hours). The

Island fox was supported by 316 staff hours

this year, second in overall man hours. As in the

past, participating field staff not only included

the Animal Care department, but also included

Animal Health and our Maintenance team. The

tasks were varied and included husbandry,

maintenance work, and veterinary care.

A significant addition to the tasks of staff in

the field was that of condor nest monitoring.

Several staff members made noteworthy

contributions to the monitoring of chick #412,

a wild hatched chick in the Sespe area. Staff

spent long days watching the chick through

a spotting scope, keeping track of behavior

and parental attention. Observations by

nest monitors were the reason for a quick

intervention by USfWS staff to treat chick #412

for a medical issue and successfully return it to

the nest. In order to build on this success, we

began the process of developing a long-term

nest monitoring program.

Our work in the Los Padres National forest

continued, as we assisted the US forest

Service in population monitoring and recovery

programs for the federally threatened California

red-legged frog and the federally endangered

Arroyo toad. The forest Service is trying to

determine these species’ occupancy of areas

within the forest, monitor the effects of forest

activities, determine current habitat usage, and

document the presence of introduced flora

and fauna that may impact the populations of

these species.

The Colorado River toad is the

largest native toad in the United States. It can secrete toxins

which may be fatal to small animals

(such as dogs) if ingested.

The number of s taf f hours spent both in the f ield and

Page 5: executive notes - Santa Barbara Zoo...Spectacled langur monkey In 2006, the Santa Barbara Zoo continued to reach out not only to our own community but in large measure to our neighbors

In 2006, the Santa Barbara Zoo continued its

support of both in situ and ex situ Island fox

conservation. Animal Care and Veterinary staff

continued to donate time on the northern

California Channel Islands, supporting the work

being done by the National Park Service. The

Santa Barbara Zoo hosted the 2006 fox festival

(educational event) and continued to maintain

the Island fox studbook. The Zoo was among

those considered for the AZA North American

Conservation Award based on our work over

the past seven years supporting Island fox

conservation.

Several Zoo staff members shared their

research with colleagues in 2006, including

two conference presentations, a poster

presentation, and three journal articles. Topics

ranged from meerkats’ dietary transitions to

western fence lizard behavioral notes to giant

panda management. We also continue to

support an array of projects facilitated by other

zoos and/or universities that are approved by

the Zoo’s Animal Care and Use Committee.

Our focus continues to be on enhancing

our awareness and management through

applicable research.

The Santa Barbara Zoo continued to support

several international conservation activities,

including projects that directly relate to the

messages that we share with our guests.

In 2006, we contributed to the work of The

Amazon Conservation Team, which works with

indigenous people to conserve biodiversity.

We supported work in Peru to provide for local

awareness of the Humboldt penguin, as well

as penguin census information. We continued

our support of the International Elephant

foundation which facilitates a variety of

conservation, research, and education projects

in both Africa and Asia. Our contributions to

the International Snow Leopard Trust helped

support the conservation of snow leopards. We

constantly seek out partnership opportunities

like the ones described above in order to

enhance the messages we relay to our guests

and further the Zoo’s conservation.

The Zoo’s conservation program continues to

grow. The significance of our efforts regularly

receives praise from our conservation partners:

US fish and Wildlife Service, Ventana Wildlife

Society, National Park Service, and the US

forest Service. There is an increasing synergy

with our programs and partnerships and our

Education, Development, Marketing, Animal

Care, and Animal Health departments that

enhances the Zoo’s conservation mission.

Li fe at the Zoo

Little did we know that 2006 would bring such

a huge addition to our Zoo. We determined

that California sea lions were not the best fit

for us because: we were down to a single sea

lion; there were health benefits to a marine

system that our current system could not

accommodate; and the Zoo is already in

close proximity to wild sea lions. for quite a

while we looked for a good home for Cubby,

our single California sea lion, and we finally

found one that provided him with lots of

social opportunities. faced with an empty

exhibit space, we explored the idea of adding

penguins. The Humboldt penguin Species

Survival Plan Coordinator deemed our aquatic

space worthy, with minor adjustments, for

penguins. Typically, due to managed selective

breeding, there are limits on when birds might

be available for new facilities. It turned out that

we not only had a good facility for penguins,

but a recent group of penguins, originally

slated for another facility, needed a new home.

We quickly created a state-of-the-art penguin

exhibit.

It took significant coordination,

communication and flexibility among our

staff and the various contractors involved,

but by June first our penguins were on

exhibit. Although our original group is not

recommended for breeding due to many

related birds in the population, it has given us

a great opportunity to learn about penguin

management and to refine our exhibit.

Our penguins have been a huge hit with

our guests, and staff. Everyday our keepers

hand-feed each individual, carefully recording

how much each one eats. We created

significant management flexibility in the

exhibit and hope to accommodate breeding in

the future when needed.

The penguin project went beyond just a

renovation of the former sea lion pool. It

included a renovation of the adjacent small

pool, also formerly used by the sea lion.

New rockwork and meshing was added to

accommodate a species found with Humboldt

penguins in the wild, Inca terns. These striking

birds have added even more activity to the

area. Across the guest path renovations were

made to the coati exhibit and the Toco toucan

exhibit. Our toucans received all new meshing

and new landscaping in their exhibit.

The Zoo welcomed our 25th giant anteater

birth in 2006. As in the past, the Animal Care Ca

pyba

ra

This seemed to get the f lamingos in egg

lay ing mode. Three v iable f lamingo chick s were

produced in 2006.

Page 7: executive notes - Santa Barbara Zoo...Spectacled langur monkey In 2006, the Santa Barbara Zoo continued to reach out not only to our own community but in large measure to our neighbors

staff was able to confirm the pregnancy and

monitor the fetus via ultrasound. This year the

Zoo received a Significant Achievement in

Long-Term Propagation Award from the AZA,

recognizing our long history and management

contribution with the giant anteater. Like many

of our previous offspring, this latest one is

destined to be placed at another zoo.

After trying a variety of techniques, we

identified a strategy that encourages a

breeding situation for our flamingos. A portion

of shade cloth was added to an area of the

flamingo exhibit to provide just a little more

privacy to the nest area. This seemed to get

the flamingos in egg laying mode. Three viable

flamingo chicks were produced in 2006. By

applying this strategy, we anticipate even

better breeding in 2007.

Our poison dart frogs were also quite

successful at adding to their population

this year. Increasing the number of frogs on

exhibit has made it even more

challenging for our guests to

count them.

One of the most significant

additions to the Animal Care

Department has been the

addition of our new Assistant

Director of Animal Programs,

Sheri Horiszny. After a career

in marketing, Sheri decided to

pursue a career in the zoo field.

She has several years of animal

management experience

from Safari West (Santa Rosa,

CA), as well as a unique perspective that has

contributed to our Animal Care team.

In 2006 the Education Department focused on

developing a strong staff and volunteer corps

and evaluating our current and proposed

programming. We continue to strive to present

only the most outstanding experiences

designed to inspire people to save the world.

for those of you familiar with Jim Collins’

book, “Good to Great,” you know one of the

keys to becoming a great organization is

getting the right people on the bus, and

getting them in the right seats. In 2006 the

Education Department did just that by hiring

three new staff members to join our team;

Tiffany Lopez (Volunteer Coordinator), Megan

Malaska (fee-based Programs Coordinator) and

Andrea Wisniewski (School-based Programs

Coordinator). Our new team spent over

250 hours in 2006 attending professional

development trainings and conferences to

ensure we had the most current knowledge

when it came to creating exceptional and

innovative educational experiences, training

volunteers and staff, and managing a

successful Education Department.

Our mission in the Education Department

is twofold: create outstanding experiences

for our guests, and guarantee that our

programs inspire others to save the world.

Accomplishing these two goals is no easy

feat, and in 2006 the Education team spent

significant time and energy evaluating our

current and future programming to ensure

that we met our goals. As a result of our

evaluations, we will be offering more family

programming at times that work for our

audiences (new Zoo Snooze program), teen

volunteers who will play a larger role at our

Zoo, and additional support to teachers in the

way of teacher training and free classroom

curriculum. Throughout 2007 you will see the

implementation of these programs, as well as

many others, as we utilize the results from our

evaluations to create and present a number of

new programs designed to get guests excited

about the Zoo!

In August, we celebrated the end of another

successful season of Zoo Camp. More than

1,300 campers attended the Santa Barbara

Zoo’s single longest-running program,

designed to provide children with a safe, fun,

and educational way to connect with wildlife.

Online registration, excellent camp staff, and

new and unique experiences like “Ick…That’s

Gross!” helped Zoo Camp once again earn

the prestigious title of “Best Summer Camp in

Santa Barbara” by readers of the Independent

and, for the first time since 1999, also the spot

of #1 Santa Barbara Summer Camp by readers

of the Santa Barbara News-Press. Thanks to

generous grants from the Towbes foundation,

charitable donations from the Dreier family

foundation and numerous others, over

100 children from Santa Barbara County

received full scholarships to participate in this

award-winning experience.

Volunteers are as much an integral part of

the Santa Barbara Zoo today as they were

when they first came together to help build

it over 40 years ago. for those inclined to

help, we have many facets of the Zoo to get

involved in. This year’s volunteers included

over 180 highschoolers as Counselors-in-

Training who helped make the Zoo Camp

experience safe and fun for campers. Nearly

450 volunteers made our 4th annual Boo at

the Zoo a spooktacular success and the largest

yet. We began Animal Care Aide and Docent

trainings in late 2006 and when these students

graduate, the total number of volunteers

ensuring the health and safety of the animals

will be more than 30, and the number of

volunteer educators sharing our message with

the public will top 25. The volunteer program

will continue to grow as the Zoo does and we

look forward to more support as the volunteer

program moves forward.

There were many successes in 2006 to

be proud of, but that doesn’t mean this

department will rest on its laurels. In 2007,

participants can expect a number of dynamic

new programs to

choose from, such as

behind-the-scenes

tours, special events,

and stage shows to

name a few. Our

volunteer staff will

grow as we invite

teens to join us in

the return of Theatre

Gone Wild and the

TEEN program, an

in-depth opportunity

for teens to gain

valuable experience at the Zoo. Zoo Camp will

be back, better than ever, with new, unique,

and age-appropriate curriculum. We are also

hard at work at developing new partnerships

with local community events, teachers, and

organizations that share our passion for

environmental education. With the support of

our community, volunteers and friends of the

Zoo, we are excited to grow our programs and

our impact in people’s lives.

The Zoo Campaign: An Update on Wild California

The first phase of The Zoo Campaign was

quite successful: in 2005, we renovated the

elephant exhibit, launched plans for Condor

Country, enhanced the Zoo’s endowment, and

began fundraising for the Discovery Pavilion

education programs. In 2006 we moved

into the second part of The Zoo Campaign:

Wild California. This phase of the campaign

represents the Zoo’s commitment to the

conservation of creatures that call California

home, especially those in the Santa Barbara

region. We are raising additional funds for

conservation education for children, families,

members, and guests.

Projects included in Wild California are:

Wild California - Conservation:• California Trails: Create a pathway

connecting a series of exhibits showcasing

the wonderful animals of California.

• Condor Country: Construct an exhibit for

California condors.

• Channel Island fox: Renovate the existing

Channel Island fox exhibit.

• Bryant & Sons Kids’ Marketplace: Transform

the gift store near the playground into

a conservation station for educational

purposes, as well as gifts.

• Desert tortoise exhibit: Create a new habitat

for the endangered desert tortoise in the

area where the current playground is.

• Los Padres National Forest exhibit: Renovate

the Desert Discovery exhibit with an

emphasis on endangered reptiles and

amphibians from Los Padres National forest.

• The Wave: While the California Trails exhibits

are being built, we will take the time to

improve guest services at the hilltop with

new restrooms, a concession area, and a

catering kitchen for special events with a

new hilltop building.

Wild California – Education:• Discovery Pavilion: Construct a new building

to house our conservation education and

volunteer programs as well as our Animal

Care and Education staff.

• Conservation Education Programs: Further

expand and enhance our award-winning

programs with the new building.

• Children’s Garden & Playground: A new

playground and garden will be created

across from the train station.

By the end of 2006 we raised over $7 million

toward our goal of $12 million, but we are far

from done. With your help, we can raise the

remaining $5 million and be able to complete

these projects, enhancing the Santa Barbara

Zoo experience for our visitors.

For more information on the Wild California campaign or to make a donation, contact the Development Department at (805) 962-5339.

Page 14: executive notes - Santa Barbara Zoo...Spectacled langur monkey In 2006, the Santa Barbara Zoo continued to reach out not only to our own community but in large measure to our neighbors

The Santa Barbara Zoo is grateful for the

support of its donors. As a private, nonprofit

corporation that receives no regular tax-based

funding, the Zoo relies on the donations of

individuals, corporations, and foundations to

maintain and improve its exhibits, facilities, and

programs.

The Zoo’s operating costs are funded by

admissions, memberships, concessions, and

retail sales. Therefore, donations to park

improvements are spent entirely on the

projects for which they were donated. The

following list demonstrates the scope of

community support for the Santa Barbara Zoo.

More than 500 guests enjoyed an exotic

evening of feathered delights at the

twenty-first annual Zoofari Ball: Flights of Fancy.

This year’s event sold out, and raised $75,000

to support the programs and animals at the

Santa Barbara Zoo!

Guests enjoyed spectacular cocktails and

scrumptious hors d’oeuvres on the beautifully

decorated hilltop. The silent auction featured

more than 65 items, and for the first time,

celebrity-designed birdhouses.

Viveca Paulin was the auctioneer of the

evening, and was assisted on stage by Chad

Dreier, one of the Honorary Chairs of the event.

Viveca started the crowd off by pretending to

auction off the stage! fabulous live auction

prizes followed, including the sale of two

Heads and two Tails tables to the Crawford

family, Cyndee Howard, the Dreier family

The Dreiers and Crawfords were also the

winners of the fabulous animal painted and

printed umbrellas, designed and fabricated

by Mark Singer, owner of Giati. The Celebrity

Cruise to Galapagos Islands was won by Lady

Ridley-Tree, and the Caymans Island Adventure

went to Cyndee Howard. The Penguin Party

was won by the Dreier family.

The tradition of naming the Zoofari Bar

continued, and Honorary Co-Chair Ginni

Dreier received the honor this year. She quickly

adjusted to her new duties as bartender, and

started serving the crowd, with previous bar

honoree Patricia Griffin assisting.

On the way to the hilltop, a friendly feather

photo opportunity awaited guests - a fine way

to remember the evening!

s The foster feeder animal sponsorship program began in 1974. In 2006,

the combined donations of the foster feeders paid for more than 77%

percent of the Zoo’s annual animal food bill.

The following list represents the deep level of commitment of the

program’s supporters.

With a keen sense of hearing and their agility

in trees, white-handed gibbons are

equipped to avoid the leopards and birds of prey who

hunt them.

The latest field data suggest fewer than 50 Amur leopards

are left in the wild. With nearly 200

of these animals in captivity, zoos are

working together to establish a healthy

captive population.
