On behalf of the board, it is my pleasure to extend thanks and appreciation to Kay Davison and her highly effective staff for their very worthy accomplishments this past year. As Summit Housing continues to expand its services in the Halton community, the front line employees have shown their professionalism and expertise. The result? Quick and effective introduction of the new programs being launched. The continuing application and growth of the relatively new ACTT Program is a prime example. Congratulations to Fiona MacClure, Dr. Satpal Girgla and their terrific support team.

The Summit board undertook a review and update of Summit Housing’s strategic plan this past year. The board and management feel confident that we are headed in the right direction to effectively serve the needs of our clients in Halton.

We had one significant change to the board this year. Eunice McGowan has been a very important contributor to Summit Housing for many years. While she has moved on to other interests, she remains one of our most vigorous supporters. Eunice was replaced by Mike Minnes, Senior Manager at Deloitte Touche, who was elevated to the board from his position as a member of the finance committee. It has been my distinct privilege to serve on this board.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE OCTOBER 2009

Summit newsworthy items during the past twelve months include the following:

♦ Connected to the eHealth and ONE Mail system. ♦ Started the process towards accreditation. ♦ Approved for April 10, 2010: sixteen subsidized rental units for people with substance abuse problems. The units will be located in

Burlington and support for the tenants will be provided by ADAPT. ♦ Approved for January 01, 2010: six Region of Halton subsidized rental units (under their Affordable Housing Program) allocated to

Summit to accommodate people who have a mental illness and are over 60 years of age. The units are located in Burlington and support for the tenants will be provided by Summit’s case management team.

♦ Developed by Summit Board: a new threeyear Summit Housing & Outreach comprehensive Strategic Plan. ♦ Presented: a total of eight employees were presented with service recognition awards during the past twelve months. Awards were

given to recognize five years (3), ten years (1), fifteen years (2), and twenty years (2).

In 2009 we were delighted to receive a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to purchase a new minivan to replace the existing aging vehicle. This new minivan will significantly benefit our service recipients residing in South Halton. Summit was also presented with a $5,000 donation from the Toskan Casale Foundation. This award was thanks to a successful presentation about Summit given by four Burlington Central High School students under the Foundation’s Youth and Philanthropy Initiative – for more information visit www.toskanfoundation.org. As well, heartfelt appreciation goes to all our individual supporters for their generous donations. Grants and gifts greatly improve the quality of life for the people we serve.

As always, I extend sincere thanks to all the people who have contributed towards the success of our organization and the services we provide: our caring and skilled employees for their hard work and dedication; Board members for their governance, guidance and commitment; Summit Client and Advisory Committee members for their valued input; the LHIN staff for providing leadership related to systemic planning; the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care staff for their ongoing assistance; the Region of Halton for recognizing the urgent need for affordable housing for our client population by making available much needed subsidized rental units; and finally, community partners for forming effective working relationships which greatly enhance the services we all provide.

On September 23, 2009, Summit Housing & Outreach Programs held an Employee Recognition

Award Luncheon to honor those employees who have provided the organization with 5, 10, 15 &

20 years of dedicated service.

The luncheon was held at the Burlington Head Office. A beautiful cake was presented to Kay

Davison and all the Award recipients. Sandy Pollock and Susan Gray coordinated the delicious

luncheon which was enjoyed by all who attended.

Jim Frizzle, President of the Board of Directors for Summit, was on hand to present Kay with her

Employee Recognition Award and gifts. Kay celebrated a very important milestone – 20 years of

valued and dedicated service to Summit Housing.

Burlington – For clients with Summit Housing and Outreach Programs, getting around the South Halton area just got a lot easier. Thanks to a $31,500 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in March, the organization was able to buy a new minivan. Mayor Cam Jackson, Local MPP Joyce Savoline, Councillor Rick Craven, and Bill Allison, a volunteer with OTF, stopped by to see the organization’s new purchase and hear more about the positive impact it will make in the community.

"Summit House has provided residents and clients with quality programming and housing for over 27 years," said MPP Savoline. "The addition of this new van, through a generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, will allow those people participating in their programs and services, greater independence and mobility to join in community events," she added.

The van was much needed as Summit Housing’s current vehicle is aging and the cost of repairs becoming extensive. This new purchase will ease this concern and ensures that Summit Housing’s over 150 clients can continue to be able to participate in various programs and activities, without transporta tion being a prohibitive issue. The group provides supportive housing and outreach services in the Halton area for people living with a serious mental illness.

Summit Housing & Outreach Programs has had excellent ongoing collaborative working relationships with the

Regional Municipality of Halton staff since 1989. Sincere thanks go to the Region of Halton for recognizing that many

people coping with a mental illness are, through no fault of their own, at risk of becoming homeless and require decent

and affordable housing. As a result of this recognition, the Region has allocated subsidized rental units throughout

Halton (under various housing initiatives) since 1996 for people receiving services from Summit’s case management

teams. These units are provided either within the Region’s housing projects or through housing allowances.

To date, there are fiftyfive (55) Halton Region subsidized units available for Summit service recipients – this total

includes the new six units for people over 60 years of age. The tenants include eight families and a total of 13 children.

In addition, ten Halton Homes Program* service recipients also live in affordable rental units provided by the Region of

Halton.

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative.

Students in grades 9 and 10 across Canada learn the

fundamentals of philanthropy by researching a

nonprofit agency in their area. The four students’

presentation about Summit Housing & Outreach

Programs to a panel of judges in their school was the

winning entry. Summit received a prize donation of

$5,000.
