Mission

As an institution of higher education committed to the Reformed Christian perspective, the mission of Dordt College is to equip students, alumni, and the broader community to work effectively toward Christ-centered renewal in all aspects of contemporary life.

Reformed Christian perspective. The vision and programs of Dordt College are grounded in a comprehensive kingdom perspective. By this we mean that Scripture and creation reveal a sovereign God, that all things are under his control and find their goal and purpose in his glory, and that the creation is his kingdom. Even though human disobedience has greatly disrupted our world, we are confident that God, with his Word of grace, reclaims his world through the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.

Equipping students, alumni, and the broader community to work effectively toward Christ-centered renewal. We believe that God created us in his image to “cultivate” creation by caring for its well-being and developing its potential. Because Christ rescued the creation from the curse of sin and reigns over it, we, his imagebearers, have work to do. We seek to transform culture and bring shalom to a broken world. Our task is to equip students to become insightful, obedient, and active servants in God’s world, working for the expression of his kingdom everywhere.

DistinCtivesWhile many colleges and universities have drifted from their religious roots, Dordt College remains true to its original mission and vision, while embracing and wrestling with the continual unfolding of that mission in the world today. Dordt’s curriculum is designed to help students develop Christian insight within a four-point framework:

• Religious orientation—knowing what we and others believe; acknowledging that thewhole world belongs to God.

• Creational structure—understanding that God made the world as an interconnectedwhole, obedient and subject to his laws.

• Creational development—knowing how our world developed and that everything wedo affects the world for good or for evil.

• Contemporary response—translating what we learn into thoughts and actions that willhelp us live and work in the world as Christ’s disciples.

These four points, outlined more completely in The Educational Task of Dordt College, guide all curriculum at the college.

Dordt’s core curriculum gives a context for specialized studies. Majors, accredited pre-professional programs, and a master’s program develop insight and prepare students for a variety of vocations and professions. A capstone course helps students apply the four themes of the Educational Framework to contemporary issues as they move from the academic setting into a larger world.

HistoryFrom its humble beginnings as a two-year teacher's college in the midst of Iowa farmland to its maturation into a fully accredited four-year college that is nationally recognized for providing an excellent Christian education, Dordt College has experienced God's hand at work in its growth. Through God’s blessing and the hard work of many dedicated employees and supporters, the college that began with five faculty members, 35 students, and one building, has become a vibrant institution of 80 faculty and more than 1,400 students living and learning on a well-equipped, attractive 150-acre campus.

Dordt College, named for the Reformed synod held in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, that emphasized the sovereignty of God through his electing grace, has been unique in its firm commitment to a Reformed worldview since its founding. This commitment continues to attract students and faculty from across the nation and the globe.

The dedicated group of people who helped found the college in 1955 has expanded into a far-reaching community of support. Dordt College alumni support the college financially, through prayer, and by sending their own children to attend at percentages that are unheard of at most institutions. Loyalty and support are vital components of Dordt’s continued growth, and they undergird the recent completion of a large fundraising campaign to support new facilities, faculty research, and scholarships for students.

The short history of Dordt College is one full of tremendous blessing when we see how quickly and how far God has brought us. We are excited to continue, day by day, stepping forward in faith and trusting in his provision for our daily bread and our long-term sustenance. Soli deo Gloria—to God alone be the glory.
