As a leading business school within a top university we constantly review and develop what we deliver to our clients to ensure we remain at the cutting edge. Our guiding purpose is to work in partnership with our clients to deliver executive development that makes a real and lasting impact on the individuals, organisations and institutions that work with us.

Drawing on our world-renowned faculty and applied business experience across a wide range of industries we offer new, practical insights into the current day issues that our clients are facing, and work with them to identify and address their future leadership challenges. Nick Gittens, Senior Executive at Nationwide Building Society Responsible for Strategy and Planning.

At Nationwide Building Society we’re focused on being the first choice for Financial Services. We recognise that a crucial element of our success depends on attracting and developing our people, who in turn deliver the great service our customer’s value every single day.

With this in mind we have developed a partnership with Bath as they have a fantastic reputation for executive development and we wanted our people to gain the benefit of their experience in this area.

Over the past 2 years we’ve worked in partnership with the University to deliver a programme that blends the

best of our internal learning and development, alongside modules taught by faculty experts. This blended solution has been tailored to draw on our respective strengths, and has helped nurture genuine innovation amongst our people as they develop new skills and consider different perspectives.

At a practical level this has resulted in a number of new initiatives being identified and implemented to improve the service we deliver to our customers. Clearly, as a mutual organisation owned by our members, delivering the best possible service is at the core of our purpose.

The unique difference that the University of Bath delivers is centred on this partnership. It has offered us the opportunity to sit down and develop a programme tailored to meet our needs rather than taking something that is off the peg. That difference has been really important to us, and we look forward to working together with the University to develop our people in support of our focus to be first choice for Financial Services.

At the University of Bath School of Management we draw on latest thinking and world-class practice based research, to deliver highly customised development programmes, designed to make the critical difference.

We create learning environments that energise, motivate and build confidence and capability.

In short, we empower executives to take control of the challenges they face, and equip them to successfully enable generative change.

Our Custom Programmes begin with a conversation, so we can truly understand your needs and design what’s right for you, developing a programme that supports your strategic objectives, and enabling you to achieve your outcomes.

DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE TOO

I don’t believe in one-off fixes, so we took the time to research suitable providers. We were looking for someone who could really listen to what we actually needed, and someone who could work with us in the longer term, who would follow up the programme effectively. Of course we also wanted to choose someone who could really deliver, with the right skills and experience. Bath has a fabulous reputation so it was a fairly obvious choice. We recognise that we have more work to do in the future, and we intend to work with the University of Bath to capitalise on the benefits that we’re already seeing within the company. The most exciting thing was giving our managers the

opportunity to get together in one place in a directed way, out of our normal working environment. It gave them the chance to talk about work related issues that wouldn’t normally appear on our day-to-day agenda, and this was particularly useful for everyone.

There’s evidence that our programme has made a significant difference to participants already, which has been exemplified by changes in staff behaviour and self-awareness; these changes relate back to our programme’s content, and the techniques presented. Although we already offer coaching and we have a significant focus on staff development, I think it’s invaluable to benefit from external input, new ideas, and look at the latest theory to complete the picture. Our track record is impressive:

The University of Bath School of Management has almost 50 years’ experience of delivering the highest quality management programmes, and is one of the top business schools in the UK.

Hear what people say about us

“We came to Bath because they have a fantastic reputation for executive development and we wanted our people to get the advantage of that.”

Nick Gittens, Head of Service Improvement at Nationwide Building Society “We were looking for someone who could work with us for more than a single shot; someone who could listen to what we actually needed and then provide a good follow-up afterwards; and somebody who could deliver, who had the right skills and experience. Bath has a fabulous reputation so it was a fairly obvious choice.”

Richard Clayton, Managing Director at Jane Clayton and Company

“We did an operational audit on a business in Bath: absolutely fantastic, you just see things with a different pair of eyes. You can then directly relate that back to Nationwide, so when you come back in you start to look with a customer’s eyes rather than operational eyes, which I think is really key… it’s enlightened us completely and I would recommend it every time.”Joanna Hall, Change Manager at Nationwide

“The opportunity to be part of a relatively small, diverse group working with the Bath Faculty, looked unmissable. The School’s synthesis of academic and practical business insights shone through. As a result I have engaged with the School to explore the potential of Bath executive development Open Programmes for the business leaders I work with in the West of England and across the UK.”

Chris Bull, Strategist at Legal & Professional Services - Retained Advisor

“The content of the programmes is evidence based, yet practical, and especially the reference points to other companies were really useful for us. We were impressed with the quality of the pre-reading and the case studies used throughout.”

Kim Atherton, Chief People Officer at OVO Energy

“...it’s the process improvement stuff that I’ve found the most interesting… looking at the steps in the process and where [colleagues] think there are bottle-necks and how we can improve those. That’s specifically what I’ll be taking back.”

Martha Goudie, PAYG Partnerships Manager at OVO Energy

“I found the programme today really engaging. Everything we’ve been doing relates to everything I do back at OVO so you can really put it into practice. The conversations we’ve been having around the table as well have been really insightful – everybody has got involved. It means you are learning and that you can take it into the job as well.”

Nick Andrews, Customer Operations Manager at OVO Energy

“The programme today has been really enjoyable because of the lecturer. He’s made a really, really challenging subject really, really interesting – very stimulating – very engaging – and has really enabled us to challenge how we think about Operations in general and has challenged us to think about how we can simplify what we do.”

“ I thought the environment in which we did the learning was really good – it lent itself to what we were trying to achieve. The breakout areas were also very useful.”

Stephen Holmes, Programme Architect IT Division at Nationwide

Our Management Suite located in The Edge, offers the very latest teaching and learning environment, including top-class catering from an in-house team, breakout spaces and access to relaxing outdoor areas.

“ The School of Management’s purpose built suite The Edge meant we were completely separate from the rest of the hubbub of the University – it was really quite helpful because we had the whole of the facility to ourselves.”

Richard Clayton, Managing Director at Jane Clayton and Company

“ The facilities here have been absolutely top class. You are really comfortable in your environment. Sometimes you come on these things and everything is too warm and stuffy… you can sit and work in a really nice environment. We’ve been really well looked after while we’ve been here… The food has been great. Everyone’s in really high spirits because it’s a really nice comfortable environment to be in.”

Nick Andrews, Customer Operations Manager at OVO Energy

“ The facilities have been really good. The lecture theatre is really bright and airy but I’m a sucker for a good lunch and the lunch has been absolutely amazing so top marks from me!”

James Hargreaves, Trading Tech Lead at OVO Energy

“ The people here seem lovely: very friendly. The facilities at The Edge are great. It’s been lovely weather and we’ve sat outside… great facilities.

It’s a lovely clean, modern setting: loads of space; loads of places to sit; lovely modern building set in beautiful countryside. Nice food and very friendly people.”
