Re- gardless of your age, your brain is capa- ble of remarkable feats. It can form new pathways for neurons to travel when old ones die and it can change its existing connections to transfer information more efficiently. It is constantly adapting and changing throughout your life – regard- less of your age or physical condition. Like any other part of the body, though, the brain benefits from regular exercise. Here are three things you can do to help yours perform at its best. Stimulate your brain Your brain is made up of a superhighway of neural pathways. These pathways help you understand and remember things. They help you solve problems and per- form regular tasks. As you age, its im- portant to keep your brain active by chal- lenging yourself to learn new things. No matter what you learn – violin, painting, golf, a foreign language, or the art of dancing – any of these things will keep your brain challenged and help you create a new set of memories to cherish. Exercise Physical exercise provides oxygen to your brain and can reduce your risk for illness that can lead to memory loss, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It also reduces stress and helps develop new neural pathways in your brain that can help improve your memory function. Ac- tivities that utilize hand-eye coordination are especially helpful. Sports like golf or tennis are great as is learning to play pi- ano or guitar. You may also notice that a good walk in the afternoon may help you feel more awake and alert later in the day when many peoples brains begin to slow down. Spend time with friends and family Relationships are great for stimulating our brains. We experience all different types of emotions when interacting with other people, and all of them are good for enhancing brain function. In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health found that people who are active socially have the slowest rate of memory decline. You may want to consider volunteering, join- ing a club, getting involved with church groups, adopting a pet, or really anything that helps you to stay connected with oth- er people. 3 Tips To Help Sharpen Your Memory As we age, it is important for us to do all we can to ensure that our brains stay healthy enough to help us preserve as many of life’s memories as possible. Re-gardless of your age, your brain is capa-ble of remarkable feats. It can form new pathways for neurons to travel when old ones die and it can change its existing connections to transfer information more efficiently. It is constantly adapting and changing throughout your life – regard-less of your age or physical condition. Like any other part of the body, though, the brain benefits from regular exercise. Here are three things you can do to help yours perform at its best.

Stimulate your brain Your brain is made up of a superhighway of neural pathways. These pathways help you understand and remember things. They help you solve problems and per-form regular tasks. As you age, it’s im-portant to keep your brain active by chal-lenging yourself to learn new things. Ac-tivities that utilize hand-eye coordination are especially helpful. Sports like golf or tennis are great as is learning to play pi-ano or guitar. You may also notice that a

good walk in the afternoon may help you feel more awake and alert later in the day when many people’s brains begin to slow down.

Spend time with friends and family Relationships are great for stimulating our brains. We experience all different types of emotions when interacting with other people, and all of them are good for enhancing brain function. In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health found that people who are active socially have the slowest rate of memory decline. You may want to consider volunteering, join-ing a club, getting involved with church groups, adopting a pet, or really anything that helps you to stay connected with oth-er people.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

HAPPENINGS AT PRIMROSE Facts About NewYear’s Eve

1. The song traditionally sung on New Year’s, “Auld Lang Syne,” means “times gone by”.

2. Lobster and chicken are considered bad luck be-cause lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune.

3. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. The tradition dates back to medie-val times.

4. The earliestknown NewYear celebra-tions were inMesopotamiaand date backto 2000 B.C

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

She got her first teaching job at Malvern, Arkansas teaching

6th grade. Patrick had a job nearby before he graduated from college. Wanda taught in several schools in Arkansas

for ten years. During that time, Pat got his college degree

and the family moved to Tennessee where he worked in

the laminating business and Wan-da taught 5 th grade for

two years. When Pat's work

transferred him to Garland,

Texas, they purchased a home

in Richardson, Dallas County.

Wanda taught 4, 5,6th grades

for twenty-nine years in

Richardson. Their son, Owen Patrick was three months old when they moved there. During those years, Wanda went

to ESTC in Commerce, Texas where she got her Master's

Degree in Elementary Educa-tion. Leanna graduated from

OBU with a degree in Counseling and later received her

Master's Degree from Southwest Semi-nary in Ft. Worth.

She currently works as a Certified personal Counselor in

Shawnee. Wanda retired in 2000 having taught for forty-

one years. She continued to work for two years in an after-

school program for kids in Richardson.

She traveled some going on a couple of cruises out

of Galveston, Texas with friends. She said she really

enjoyed that. Wanda was also active in playing bridge and

in her church,

Richardson Heights Baptist Church. She loved to sing in the

choir and was active in her Sunday School Class.

In 2013, Wanda's children wanted her to move closer to one of them. She chose to move to Shawnee. She sold her home in Texas in three months and moved into the Primrose Retirement Community. Wanda has four grandchildren, three girls and one boy, ages ten to twenty-one. Wanda said, "I am grateful for the family I grew up in and the family that God gave me. I am thankful that He guided me here. I am very contented with the life I have now."

Resident Spotlight “Wanda C.”

In Wanda’s family it was

under-stood that each of the

seven chil-dren would go to

college. They all got college

degrees except for one son

who died when he was fifteen

months old. Wanda went toHSTC (Henderson State Teacher's College) in Arkadelphia,

Arkansas where she graduated with a BSE degree . In her

sophomore year, 1953, Wanda was one of five girls chosen

by the student body to be "Queen of Stars" (Campus

Beauty) for that year. Their pictures were sent to Harry

Conover who owned a modeling agency in New York City

and he chose Wanda.

Soon after that she met her husband to be. He was

a veteran going to school on the Gil. Bill. Wanda said, "One

day he called me and asked me to go out with him. I didn't

really know him but I had seen him around and I was

interested," When she graduated from college Wanda and

Patrick were married.
