Activity description:

1) In the classroom: traditional lesson and group work with a guide.Topic: the park is a territory system. Its natural, scientific, historical, cultural and landscape values are organized and managed as a whole in order to protect, restore and improve the natural environment, and develop those human activities compatible with the protection of ecosystems. Scientific teaching and amusing research have been carried out.

2) Guided excursion to the park: paying attention to the biodiversity as the main source of a “Healthy Park”.

3) In the classroom: revision of the data and the activities carried out by preparing some big posters.

How to get

there

Established in 1988, the StironeRegional Park includes a 14 km stretch of the torrent Stirone which crosses the territory of four Municipalities: Fidenzaand Salsomaggiore Terme, in the Province of Parma, Vernasca and Alseno, in the Province of Piacenza. It’s a special park because it shows three special features:

a)It’s a natural park;

b)It’s a historical and religious park;

c)It’s a geological park

The charm of the

park

Thanks to the establishment of the park ecosystems have been restored to their natural state. It shows a noteworthy biodiversity.

During the Middle Ages it was a famous pilgrimage destination thanks to the healing and miraculous powers of a spring which flowed near the river. A Romanesque church was built nearby, and you can still visit it.

The area has a great paleontological relevance. The erosive action of the river has brought to light fossils which date back to the Tertiary period and the Quaternary era. It looks like an open-air museum.

Students’ opinions

Visiting the Stirone River Park has been an amusing experience. We took some pictures and notes. We learnt how men can be dangerous for nature, especially when they hoover up gravel from the river bed.

Visiting the Stirone River Park has been very interesting, and I found out new aspects about nature. I realized that woods need a lot of attention. When trees and leaves fall down you mustn’t touch or remove them because they will be the den and food for the other living. I found out what an ecosystem is. At school during the lesson we talked about the food chain. I loved listening to the story of Saint Nicomede and the pilgrims who arrived at the church carrying a rock on their head and after that drinking at the miraculous spring. An amazing experience!

Visiting the Stirone Park has changed my

way of looking at woods and rivers. Now

whenever I walk along a river I think

about its long history and that it’s close to

me. The Stirone river helped people to

survive, while the wood has been a great

surprise to me. I couldn’t imagine how

fascinating it is. I will never forget this

experience.

In classe: lezione frontale e lavoro di gruppo con l’operatore del parco sulsignificato di Parco come sistema territoriale che, per valori naturali,scientifici, storico-culturali e paesaggistici di particolare interesse sonogestiti e organizzati in modo unitario per conservare, ripristinare emigliorare l’ambiente naturale, sviluppare le attività umane compatibilicon la protezione degli ecosistemi, svolgere attività di ricerca scientifica,didattica e ricreativa.

Visita guidata al parco con particolare attenzione alla biodiversità comefonte di “Salute del Parco”.

In classe: rielaborazione delle attività svolte e sintesi mediante l’uso dicartelloni illustrativi.

DoveIl parco regionale dello Stirone,un torrente che scorre fra leprovince di Parma e Piacenza,inizia a Vigoleno e arriva fino aFidenza dove noi risiediamo.

Che cos’è

È un parco molto particolare perché in esso si rivelano tre aspetti:

1. Naturalistico

2. Storico religioso

3. Geologico

Il primo si basa su una buona biodiversità che, con l’introduzione del parco, ha

riportato gli ecosistemi allo stato naturale; il secondo vede questa zona, in

periodo medievale, come luogo di pellegrinaggio per le particolari proprietà

taumaturgiche e miracolose di una fonte, che sgorgava nei pressi del torrente,

ove poi è stata costruita una chiesa ancora esistente; non da ultimo l’aspetto

più singolare, quello geologico, legato alla presenza di reperti fossili delle ere

terziaria e quaternaria portati alla luce in modo spettacolare dai processi

erosivi del fiume trasformandolo, in alcuni punti, in un museo all’aperto.

Riflessioni dei ragazzi

Visitare il Parco dello Stirone è stato divertente. Abbiamo scattato foto, preso appunti e abbiamo imparato come l’uomo può avere un impatto negativo sulla natura anche prelevando cose che sembrano inutili come la ghiaia dal letto di un fiume. (Giorgia)

Visitare il Parco dello Stirone è stato molto educativo e ho conosciuto aspetti della natura per me nuovi. Ho scoperto che il bosco va curato e quando cadono gli alberi e le foglie bisogna lasciarle per terra perché serviranno come tana e cibo per altri esseri viventi. Ho scoperto cos’è un ecosistema. Nel lavoro in classe abbiamo parlato si catene e reti alimentari. Mi è piaciuto sentire la leggenda della chiesa di San Nicomede e dei pellegrini che arrivavano alla chiesa con un masso sulla testa per poi bere alla fonte miracolosa. L’esperienza è stata bellissima. (Novella)

Il Parco dello Stirone è stata un’esperienza che ha cambiato il mio modo di osservare il bosco e il fiume, infatti ora quando passo di fianco ad un corso d’acqua penso che dietro ci sia una storia di migliaia di anni e soprattutto nel caso dello Stirone penso che la sua storia mi riguardi da vicino e che ha aiutato le persone prima di me a sopravvivere. Invece pensando al bosco ho conosciuto alcuni suoi aspetti che prima nemmeno immaginavo. Di conseguenza direi che è stata un’esperienza positiva che porterò sempre con me. (Leonardo B.)
