Main ExcursionGetting There

Your expedition does not include international flights to Peru. You should arrive in Lima on Day 1. It is never a bad idea to arrive a day or two earlier. New Paths Expeditions will be glad to arrange extra hotel overnights and activities for you.

Day 1: Arrive in Lima.

Today you will fly to Lima. Most flights arrive in the evening. Upon arrival, your Master Guide will meet you and walk you to the Windham Airport Hotel. This perfectly fine 4-star property is the most basic of our excursion, and we have selected it to avoid having to drive one to two hours to another hotel. This is the most convenient configuration of the itinerary. If you would like to avoid the 4-star overnight, we recommend that you opt to add one of the Lima extensions, which include all overnights at the Belmond Miraflores Park Plaza Hotel, the best in the city.

Overnight: Wyndham Airport Hotel. Meals aloft.

Day 2. To Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After a comfortable night recovering from the international flight, you will enjoy a beautiful morning 55-minute flight over the Andes. Once we land in Cusco, the capital of the Inca Imperium, we will drive 45 minutes to Pisaq, located at a much lower altitude than Cusco and considered the door of the impressive Sacred Valley of the Incas. After a short visit of the Inca town, you will continue to a beautiful colonial Hacienda, our lunch stop, decorated with colonial art and breath-taking vistas of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Page 6: Exclusive Peru

Later on, you will drive to the Belmond Rio Sagrado Luxury hotel, where you will spend two nights. This first class hotel has the best Spa in the area, beautiful gardens, and great cuisine.

Dinner is included at the hotel. Overnight at the Belmond Rio Sagrado Resort & Spa. (B, L, D)

Day 3. The Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Today you will visit the Ollantaytambo. The village is the best surviving example of classic Inca town. Many of the original Inca walls, compounds, and irrigation channels date back to the 15th century or earlier. Ollantaytambo is so well preserved that it serves as a veritable replica of a typical community during the reign of the Incas. You will also tour one of the largest archeological complexes in Peru. During the time of the Incas, Ollantaytambo was a military fortress and administrative center; today it is one of the greatest Inca remains, only surpassed by Machu Picchu.

On the way back to the hotel, you will have the opportunity to visit Pablo Seminario ceramic studio, the most famous pottery artist of South America, whose work is dedicated to rediscovering and preserving the ceramic techniques and designs of ancient Peruvian cultures—an important part of this area’s cultural heritage. Pablo, a close friend of Luxury Paths, has permanent exhibitions in the Chicago Field Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.

Lunch is included at Wayra Restaurant, where you will enjoy native Andean food served at their terrace while observing a beautiful Peruvian Paso Fino horse show. As its name indicates, the Peruvian Paso horse is native to Peru, a direct descendent of the Spanish horses brought to America by the Conquistadors. Because of its isolation for almost 500 years, the Peruvian Paso horse has evolved as one of the purest breeds in the world. The existence of this breed has been called “the greatest triumph of genetic selection ever achieved by a group of breeders.” Thanks to its unique, inborn, four beat lateral gaits; the Peruvian Paso horse is undoubtedly the smoothest riding horse in the world. You will have the chance to ride them if you like (If you are an experienced rider, and would like to go outdoors with a Peruvian Paso Fino horse for an hour or more, please let us know in advance. Extra charges could apply)

Dinner is included at the hotel.

Overnight at the Belmond Rio Sagrado Resort & Spa. (B, L, D)

Day 4. Machu Picchu.

Awaiting you today is by far and away one of the high points in world travel: Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, discovered by American Explorer Hiram Bingham.

The experience starts by boarding a train towards the town of Aguas Calientes. The train ride - one hour and 45 minutes - provides views that are nothing less but spectacular. Once you arrive at Aguas Calientes town, you will board a bus that in 20 minutes will take us to the actual Machu Picchu archeological site.

Your first activity will be to enjoy lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, located right beside the Inca citadel. While you enjoy lunch, your Master Guide will take care of the check-in process. After some rest time at the hotel, you will continue with a tour of Machu Picchu, the New 7th Wonder of the World and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site; afterward, there is free time for you to explore the site on your own, to relax or to meditate.

The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, where you will spend the night, is the only hotel located adjacent to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Even though rooms are small, it offers guests exceptionally easy access from early morning to late afternoon to the Inca citadel, when most of the day visitors have left. Sit out on a terrace and savor Peruvian cuisine based on produce grown on the Lodge’s own plot, enjoy time at the spa, visit the superb orchid garden and watch the many species of hummingbirds that feed there (Peru is the country with the biggest diversity of orchids and hummingbirds in the world): this delightful hideaway is the perfect place to relax and unwind in the shadow of the Lost City of the Incas.

Overnight Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 5. Your day at Machu Picchu - Hiram Bingham Luxury Train to Cusco City.

The morning is free to further explore the Machu Picchu archeological complex. The second entrance to Machu Picchu with your guide is included.

After lunch at the hotel, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes to enjoy some shopping time before boarding the luxurious Hiram Bingham train back to Cusco (3.5 hours); on board you will enjoy teatime, a selection of Peruvian wines, gourmet dinner, and onboard entertainment. This train is considered one of the most luxurious train rides on the planet!

Upon arrival to Cusco, you will be transferred to the upscale Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Hotel, by far the best in town.

Overnight Belmond Palacio Nazarenas. (B, L, D)

Day 6. Cusco, the Imperial city of the Incas.

Today’s excursion is an incredible trip into the past, as you will tour some of the incredible nearby archeological sites. Start off at the Korikancha or Temple of the Sun (UNESCO), where you will have the opportunity to admire the fine craft work the Incas made on stone.

Then it is time to visit the Sacsayhuaman Fortress (UNESCO), built of enormous stone blocks expertly shaped by the Incas. It is strategically located at the top of a hill overlooking the city of Cuzco. What a view of the city!

After Sacsayhuaman, return to the city Main Square on which sits the Cathedral (UNESCO), the exquisite Church of the La Compañía de Jesús, and other colonial buildings.

Page 9: Exclusive Peru

Midway through the tour, you will take a break for a pleasant lunch served at Cicciolina Restaurant, one of the very best in town.

In the end, there will be free time for you to explore the site on your own and enjoy some of the finest shopping in Latin America. Your Guide will be available to assist you.

Dinner is included at Map Café, the famous restaurant located inside the best Museum in town, conveniently located across the street from your hotel, and directed by Chef Coque Ossio, considered the “prominent star of Peru’s gastro sky.” We have included a sampling menu paired with fine wines.

Overnight Belmond Palacio Nazarenas. (B, L, D)

Day 7. Cusco City and Fly US.

In the morning, you will visit the large San Pedro Market, a place for discovery; you will be amazed by the unique produce, the witchery stands, the colorfully dressed local vendors, the rhythm of life. You will gain close contact with locals -if you wish, of course- sample new flavors, shop for souvenirs and understand a bit more what is like living in the heart of the Andes.

After the market visit, you will return to your hotel and enjoy lunch at its award-winning restaurant, before driving 20 minutes to the airport for your 55-minute flight to Lima. Once at the Lima airport, you will be greeted by our representatives, who will assist you with the check-in process and escort you to the departure area for the flight back home.

Finally, you will visit the beautiful and impressive Cathedral, the oldest building in the capital, and the stage where the most important events in the lives of Lima residents used to take place. Day 3. Flavors of Peru and Pre-Inca Lima Culture.

Peruvians, people truly passionate about food, have been enjoying the rich diversity of the ocean, the Andes, and the Amazon on their plates for millenniums. With post Columbus migrations, they received culinary influences from almost all cultures of the world. This is why, today Peru has one of the most diverse cuisines on the planet... It is hard to see a recipe being repeated in a Peruvian home in the course of a month!

Today, visit one of Lima’s signature markets to see the amazing variety of fish, fruit, and vegetables used in the superb Peruvian cuisine. You will be equipped with a list of names and descriptions of the products you will encounter to help you enjoy this visit even more. Afterwards, you will watch as the chef from a famous restaurant demonstrates how to prepare Peru’s main seafood dishes, including the emblematic ceviche. Rounding out this culinary experience is a delicious lunch served alongside Pisco Sours, the national drink of Peru, an experience not to be missed.

After lunch, and on your way back to the hotel, stop to visit Huaca Huallamarca, just one of the hundreds of Pre-Inca temples that are scattered around Lima. Huaca Huallamarca is one of the best preserved and located in the San Isidro district, the most affluent of the city.

When to Go and Weather:

Peru can be enjoyed year round. During the months of late November till early March, there are rains in the Andes (Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Titicaca lake), and it is summer in the Coast (Lima and Nasca Lines). The rains in the Andes are, normally, scattered showers that last up to a couple of hours.

On June 24, Cusco locals celebrate the Inti Raymi, or party of the sun. A very interesting and beautiful event in Cusco. Prices during this festival increase much. If you would like to be part of the Inti Raymi, please let us know well in advance. Surcharges will apply. Other times of the year that could force a price increase include Christmas and New Years Eve.

If unsure about the dates you would like to visit Peru, please call your Travel Agent or us for advice.

Lima and Nasca Lines

It never rains in the coast. The most rain one could get is a little drizzle. During late December, January, February and early March, it is summer. The skies are blue and temperatures warm. During the rest of the year a cloud covers the coast. The Nasca Lines overflight is, normally, not affected by this cloud.

Page 21: Exclusive Peru

Cusco

It is located at 11200 feet over sea level. It can be quite sunny and dry during the day, cooling down at nights or while under a shade. During late November till early March, scattered showers are common. The rest of the year, blue skies are the norm.

The Titicaca Lake

It is located at 12500 feet. It can be quite sunny and dry during the day, cooling down at nights or while under a shade. During late November till early March, scattered showers are common. The rest of the year, blue skies are the norm.

Page 22: Exclusive Peru

The Amazon

Located at almost sea level, the Amazon Rainforest is hot and humid. It rains throughout the year, but between late November and early March rains tend to be longer, while during the rest of the year they are short showers.

On late November, the level of the Rivers increase till mid June, when they decrease again up to 40 feet from their highest level. Both times are good for visiting the Amazon. The high water period is great for those who prefer to explore mainly by boat, while during the low water period, those who like to hike in the jungle will have more chances to do it.

90 days before the excursion, all expedition participants will receive a detailed recommended packing list.Chart Credits: http://www.worldweatheronline.com/

Altitude

Lima is located at sea level. There are no concerns about altitude sickness.

Cusco is located at 11200 ft., and Machu Picchu at 7970ft. The excursion itinerary has been planed to reduce to a minimum the possibility of suffering altitude sickness: As soon as you arrive to Cusco, you will be transferred to the Sacred Valley of the Incas (9000ft) and given time to rest, allowing your body adapt to the altitude. You will then continue to the lower altitude of Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco. At that point, most bodies have generated the levels of red blood cells to carry the extra oxygen needed. This route was designed a few decades ago by our founders and after thousands of Guests we can count with our fingers the times when the oxygen bottles in our busses have been used and can report that we never had to evacuate Guests from Cusco due to altitude sickness.

The Titicaca Lake is located at 12500 feet. If you decide to visit this fascinating area, you will do it after your Machu Picchu and Cusco experience, thus, you will be perfectly acclimatized to the altitude at that point.

The Amazon is located almost at sea level. There are no concerns about altitude sickness.
