2 Public Media Connect • February/March 2021
WelcomeDear Member,
As we get into February and we work toward getting our lives back to normal, your public television stations are busy continuing to provide educational support to our community while bringing you new local programs, both from our own production team and in coordination with local partners. We are also busy planning our Summer Action Auction, our LIVE! on CET Reimagined event (details coming in the next issue of this magazine!) and more. We are getting 2021 off to a great start and we hope you are too.
To support our community’s young learners, we started airing Let’s Learn, a new hour-long daytime program featuring instruction by educators and virtual field trips for kids ages 3 to 8, especially those learning at home. SOITA also continued to offer a robust schedule of educator-and-student-focused workshops, including new age-specific courses about Google Classroom. We are also creating new videos as part of American Graduate: Getting to Work.
In the production space, we are continuing to produce new episodes of The Art Show and SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar and, as I write this, we are working to build a new remote-interview set-up in our studios, which we can continue to use well after the pandemic has ended. Our team is hard at work on our documentary about women’s suffrage and the second part of The Dayton Arcade: Waking the Giant. Our programming team is also working with local producers to schedule films like Long Story Short and Future Black City. There are also multiple digital projects in the works, including 60-Second SHOWCASE and Hobby Hunting, which will continue with new episodes through the spring.
From PBS, February and March feature shows like Europe’s New Wild; The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song; Fast-Forward; NOVA: Beyond the Elements; Extinction: The Facts; and our March Membership Drive programs.
We are excited to announce that our Summer Action Auction will be held from April 9 to April 19. This event, which complements our fall broadcast auction, will include gift certificates and items best enjoyed during the summer and early fall. Check out our Connecting with CET or Connecting with ThinkTV section of this magazine for more details.
Finally, I want to say thank you. We had a successful year-end giving campaign and are off to a strong start in 2021 thanks to your support. We appreciate your viewership and your membership, which allows us to continue to serve our community.
My best to you.

In 1968, producer Ellis Haizlip developed a new show aimed at Black audiences, one that used the familiar variety-show format to display and celebrate the breadth of Black culture. For five years, the public television series SOUL! highlighted Black literature, music and politics, and often paired guests in unexpected juxtapositions that gave them an opportunity to shine in unique ways.

Financial and Estate Planning To-Do ListNow is a great time to review your financial and estate plans as you begin 2021. Here are a few simple tips to get you started.
1. Gather your personal and financial information in one document. If you would like to receive our FREE Personal Estate Planning Guide, go to www.thinktv.org/support and select the Estate Planning page. Both hard copy and digital format are available. You can also request a copy by calling the number below.
2. Consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution. If you’re at least 70 ½, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to ThinkTV. Your gift will never count as income but will always make a difference. Contact your plan administrator for more information or reach us at the number below.
3. Reduce taxes with a gift of stock. Making a gift of stock or appreciated assets is a smart way to avoid capital gains taxes, reduce income tax, and support our mission at the same time. Visit our website for details: www.thinktv.org/support/gifts-stock/
4. Remember your favorite charities in your plans. An easy way to include ThinkTV in your estate plan is through a beneficiary designation on your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or other investment account. This change can easily be made online through your brokerage firm’s website.
Let us know how we can help you reach your charitable goals while supporting public television. Contact Laura Letton at 937-220-1647, or [email protected] for more information.

Film from Dayton Filmmakers Premieres on Independent LensWhen Dolly Parton sang “9 to 5,” she was singing about a real movement that started with a group of secretaries in the early 1970s. Their goals were simple — better pay, more advancement opportunities and an end to sexual harassment — but as seen in 9to5: The Story of a Movement, their fight that inspired a hit would change the American workplace forever. This film was created by two Dayton-area filmmakers and we are pleased to be airing it Thursday, February 4, at 10pm on ThinkTV16 and Friday, February 5, at 10pm on ThinkTV14.

Viewer Q&A
So bummed that you put pledge repeats (Suze Orman again!) on Create TV when I could have been watching Julia Child this weekend. I will put my pledge envelope aside and hopefully get over my disappointment before I write my check.Eileen D., Montgomery
The Create channel repeats programs over several dayparts. So if you have a DVR, you can set up a weekly record of Julia Child episodes in off hours. Then if Julia is pre-empted at the time you normally watch, you have the backup records to watch. Hope this helps, and thanks for your membership that helps pay the bill for the Create channel.
-Jim Wiener, Programmer
I teach a careers class to 7th and 8th graders. Recently, I saw part of a program that I thought would be great for my students. It was about students that were taking engineering courses and getting Sinclair credit. They may have shown students in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Do you know if there is a link to that show so that I can show it to my students? Thanks you!! We do not have cable and my kids LOVE PBS - and still do even though they are now in college!!Charlotte M., Springboro
You were watching our local production, THE CAREER PATH LESS TAKEN. It shows how a mix of college and vocational training can make students in-demand workers in the work force of the future. You can stream CAREER PATH on the PBS Video App or at www.thinktv.org by clicking on “education” and then “American Graduate.” It’s also available at https://dayton-americangraduate.org/careerpathlesstaken/.
-J.W.
I have been a loyal viewer and contributor to this station, I was deeply disturbed that I was not able to watch the CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS special on line. Unacceptable and angry that my contributions are in vain.Robert M., Cincinnati
Along with the CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING, the CHRISTMAS show was made available to PBS stations for one broadcast only. No online rights were granted.
Thank you for your membership, Robert. Just understand that when the expectation is that every program should be viewable online, there’s disappointment when that’s not the case. But “deeply disturbed”? It’s 2021, and hopefully hyperbole will be going out of style.
This communication is a request for you and your broadcast division to consider discussing some of the topics to follow in this email. So I respectfully ask you to ponder the following questions:Q. How do you want to reach your audience? Q. Who is your audience based on your criteria? As business owners we know our audience/client base is paramount to keeping us employed and to providing us additional support. Q. Do you prefer to find your own story from critical thinking outside of the box, or do you prefer to mirror all the mainstream journalists?Q. Do you want to convey a professional standard such as showing respect to the subject person?Q. Do you want to be unbiased and accurate in your reporting or would you prefer to be more like the tabloids—providing your personal opinions based on conjecture rather than facts?Q. Is it okay to slander or libel someone based on inaccurate information? And who is libel if you do?Q. Do you strive to be known for your reputation as a fair, unbiased, accurate broadcast, and is that important to you?Q. Do you strive to project your personal opinions and use extreme negative body language and speech to emphasize your negative opinion by belittling or demeaning your subject matter?I am asking these questions, because they are the questions which came to mind as I listened to the WASHINGTON WEEK news broadcast this morning. It is far below the standards of journalism according to the American Press Institute.Susan B., Kettering
Well no, they fall below YOUR broad interpretation of THEIR standards, and the American Press Institute doesn’t review media outlets and decree who makes their grade. As always, complaints about PBS program content can be directed to the independent ombudsman known as the PBS Public Editor at http://www.pbs.org/publiceditor/home.Be advised that the Public Editor wants specifics and not generalized complaints like “they’re so biased.” Finally, on the Socratic Marathon, the notion of “respectfully” asking loses all meaning when questions become increasingly loaded and agenda driven.WASHINGTON WEEK is all about real reporters’ analysis. It has endured 53 years, the longest running prime time news/public affairs series on television.-J.W.
