IADS ExchangeIADS CLINICAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM

“GO BEYOND YOUR DENTAL BORDERS”

The IADS Exchange Program has been founded in the 1960s and since then it has made possible for tens of thousands of students to go abroad and share their experiences in terms of dentistry

and student life.

Today we are proud of sustaining and assuring the continuity of such marvelous program which gave the opportunity to talented dental students of enriching their knowledge and to create tight bonds of friendship overseas.

The current edition of the IADS International Student Exchange Pro-gram Booklet comprises the available exchange program information from most of the IADS countries and a guideline for the Exchange Pro-gram Officers. It has been made to be for the use of the IADS National/Local Exchange Officers in order to facilitate a much faster and easier way of establishing exchange partnerships between the IADS countries. The Booklet comes for the usage of dental students as well, they being able to understand better the dental and social aspects of a foreign country, thus choosing an eventual country of destination.

The Program wouldn’t have been developed and sustained without the enormous work and dedication of the previous and current IADS Na-tional/Local Exchange Officers and IADS Executive Committee Officers. With this occasion we would like to thank everyone which have contrib-uted of helping students “going beyond their dental borders”

Learn, Connect, Make friends! Be part of it!

Objectives differ between organisers and par-ticipants and from country to country, but the ideal Exchange will benefit the participant in some or all of the following ways:

- to enhance the participant’s knowledge of dentistry, by exposing them to technologies, facilities, or a socio-economic environment that is different from their home;- to enhance the participant’s cultural and social understanding of the country visited;- an exchange of knowledge and skills between host and participant;- to improve the participant’s language skills;- to open the participant’s mind to different ap-proaches to familiar problems;- to encourage independence in the planning and research of such a trip;- to develop the professional community spirit of the participant and the host students.

Local Exchange Officers represent the IADS Exchange Program at the respective schools of a country-member. They are under the au-thority of the National Exchange Officer. Na-tional Exchange Officers represent a country member at all IADS meetings. They are under the authority of the International Exchange Officer who, also represents the Exchange Programme to the IADS Executive Committee and internationally.

i. NEO1 must make sure that the exchangee completes the Student Exchange Report and returns it to him/her. ii. NEO1 will forward the report to IEO, who will issue and IADS Exchange Certificate for the student. Exchange Reports will take part in Student Exchange Report Compe-tition and placed on the IADS website in order to create database of students’ experiences. iii. If adverse situations have occurred, a report to the IEO has to be made by the NEO or student who feels disap-pointed. iv. Each NEO will keep a record of exchanges and should present a NEO Report on International Exchanges to the IEO at the NEO Meeting. These meetings occur twice a year: at the MYM and Annual Congress. The IEO will collect each NEO Report on International Exchanges and will compile the IEO Annual Report on International Exchang-es in order to keep statistics of the exchanges.

Types of Exchanges:

Students can usually go for between 2 and 6 weeks. Most exchanges are on a “unilateral” basis, where the incoming students pay the cost of their accommodation, transport and food, etc. Some places offer a “bilateral” exchange where the incoming student is hosted by the students (i.e. the host students provide meals and accommodation), in return for being hosted when they visit the other coun-try at a later time. Bilateral exchanges are established by NEOs who sign contracts between each other and specify conditions of exchanges, which may be freely modified

Unilateral Exchanges In a unilateral exchange, the exchangee has to pay the costs of food, transportation and accommodation. Ar-rangements are made at the host country so that the exchangee may participate in academic and social pro-grammes.

Bilateral Exchanges In a Bilateral Exchange, the student does not have to pay for food or accommodation during his/her exchange. An agreement exists between two countries or schools so that for each student they send, another will be received. There may be other requirements depending on the countries participating on the exchange (language ex-amination, year of students participating, etc.). A contract should be signed by the participating NEOs to specify the terms of the exchange.

9It is essential that potential exchangees check visa requirements well in advance before planning and visit to a foreign country. Because of the constantly changing requirements of different national governments towards visitors from other countries, it would be impossible to present an authoritative listing of requirements for each country in this guidebook. Therefore, only gen-eral guidelines are given, and all participants in the Exchange Programme are advised to check with the Embassy or Consulate of the country they propose to visit well in advance. Many Embassies/Consulates offer a telephone service for such enquiries, and as such the enquiry can be made relatively quickly. It is the duty of exchangee or NEO1 to provide NEO2 will all information what kind of invitation and documents should he pre-pare and send to exchangee in order he gets a visa. Additional costs incurred by NEO2 regarding to invitation sending should be covered or reimbursed by exchangee.IADS does not accept any responsibility for or changes in cancellation of arrangements which arise due to failure to adequately check requirements for entering any country. 7

6 Step 3: After the exchange is completed

7Step 2: Once the student has decided to go on exchange

i. NEO1 must check that the application form is fully and correctly completed, including all contact details and student’s identification data. He/she must also make sure that the form has been sent before the deadline for the proposed exchange. ii. NEO1 makes two copies of the form, and posts the original to NEO2.iii. NEO2 tries to arrange the exchange: •Iftheexchangeeisaccepted,he/shemustsendan Acceptance notice (or a similar letter) to both NEO1 and the exchangee. This letter must include the dates for the exchange, name of the Dental School hosting the exchange, contact details of responsible LEO or student, accommodation arrangements and address. •Iftheexchangeeisrejected,he/shemustsenda Rejection notice (or a similar letter) letter) to both NEO1 and the exchangee. He/she must then send the Ap-plication form to NEO3. NEO3 then tries to arrange the exchange in that country. This letter must include the reasons for the application being rejected. iv. If a Unilateral Exchange is arranged, NEO2 has to make sure that the exchangee knows how much money will he/she need to cover exchange expenses and provide the student will information essential for his arrival and stay. v. If a Unilateral Exchange Sponsor has been arranged by NEO2, he/she must inform NEO1.vi. if a Bilateral Exchange is arranged, NEO1 and NEO2 must make sure that the terms of the contract have been arranged before the acceptance notice is sent. vii. NEO1 must send a Confirmation Notice (or similar let-ter) to NEO2 to confirm that the exchangee will partici-pate. viii. Once the final outcome is known, NEO1 must send one of the copies of the application to the IEO for filing purposes.

NEO is organizing exchange by himself or he is contacting LEO, who will be in charge of hosting student in his/her city. NEO should prepare letter of invitation for students in need of visa, help the student and advise him on travel as well as give him all essential information on the exchange conditions.

Often exchanges are based on mutual confidence and settlements between NEO1 and NEO2 so they both should act reliable.

i. IADS Application for Exchange

The Application Form is the only way a student can request an exchange. It should be completed fully and must include the Dean’s signature (optional), organiza-tion’s stamp and NEO signature. The student may have three choices for an exchange location.

ii. Acceptance/Rejection Notice

The Acceptance/Rejection Notice was designed to sim-plify the exchange process. It saves NEO2 from having to write individual letters to NEO1 once the outcome of the exchange process is known. It is hoped that this will speed up the process of application. A letter from NEO2 containing the correct information is acceptable, provided that copies are sent to both NEO1 and the exchangee in the usual way. If the student is accepted, NEO2 must write the dates for the exchange and the deadline for confirmation on the notice as well as accommodation address and contact details of LEO or person responsible for hosting an exchangee. If the student is rejected, NEO2 must write the reason for rejection and send the application form to NEO3 as appropriate.

iii. Confirmation noticeA Confirmation Notice will be sent by every NEO send-ing a student on exchange. It must specify the school that the student will attend, and the dates of his/her exchange as well as details of his/her arrival. The confir-mation notice can also be used to cancel the exchange. It is very important to send the Confirmation notice before the deadline so that the host school has time to make the appropriate arrangements.

iv. Student exchange Report

This report should be completed by every student participating on an exchange through IADS. It should be completed by the exchange upon his/her return, and sent by the LEO to the NEO. If any problems are reported, these must be verified by NEO1 when he/she receives the NEO Report on Student Exchange from NEO2. The situation should be reported to the IEO as appropriate, especially if the NEOs concerned cannot find or agree on a solution to it. Student Exchange Report is a basis for IEO to issue Exchange Certificate and to report it for the Student Exchange Report Competition.

v. IADS UNILATERAL/BILATERAL EXCHANGE CONTRACT

This can be used to make arrangements for mutual exchange of students. It can be used for individual students or groups, depending on the availability of places in the countries concerned. Contracts can be signed by NEOs at the MYM or Congress, and can be valid for an agreed period, usually six months or a year. They specify conditions of unilateral or bilateral exchanges.

vi. NEO REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES

This report is standardised to make it easier for the NEO to present the information to the NEO Meetings, and also to sim-plify the IEO’s job of compiling annual exchange statistics. The report is to be presented twice annually: at the MYM (for the period August — January) and at the Congress (for the period February — July). A written report detailing problems or suggestions may also be attached for the attention of the IEO. If the NEO cannot attend the MYM or congress, he/she may send a replacement with the appropriate information, or may send the information to the IEO not later than one week after the end of the meeting.

Some of the most common ingredients are: cereals such as rice and maize; tubers such as potato and cassava; assorted legumes; meats, including beef, chicken, pork and goat; fish; and seafood. Co-lombia cuisine also features a variety of tropical fruits such as mango, banana, papaya, guava, pineapple, lulo, and passion-fruit. Among the most representative regional dishes are ajiaco santafereño, bandeja paisa, mote de queso, lechona tolimense, mamona, mute santandereano, tamales and fish dishes, especially in coastal regions. In the Caribbean Coast region, the most popular dish is the sancocho, which varies in prepara-tion and ingredients. Ingredients include soup guandú with salted meat, fish, shellfish, turtle, chicken and goat. The arepa with chorizo is a fast food in Colombia. In the Andean region, typical regional Tolimense dishes of the Tolima Department and Huila Department include lechona, tamales, and rice with chicken, pork and soft grains wrapped in banana leaves. The are also offers Cundiboyacense preparations such as Masato, chicha, changua or potato soup, stew santafereño, the ajiaco and other specialties including cuchuco or pork spine, and river fish. The bandeja paisa is a typical dish of this region and is sometimes considered the representative Colombia dish.

National Traditions

The Seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain were coastal tribes known for trading, fishing and pearling during the early 50s. They shared the same culture, language, religion, nomadic lifestyle and most importantly the same valuable resource; The Black Gold.

After the discovery of the Black Gold in, 1961, a new form of trade was soon to begin and in 1962 it flourished and completely transformed the first exporting Emir-ate, Abudhabi. A few years later, Dubai followed in the exporting trade and in December 2nd, 1971 the union of the Seven Emirates was to come to existence to form what we know today as the United Arab Emirates. very spicy and many flavourings are used. Algiers and popular coastal towns have a fair selection of good restaurants, serv-ing mainly French and Italian-style food, though even classic dishes will have an unmistakable Algerian quality. Fish dishes are exceptionally good.

Regional drinks: As in much of North Africa and the Middle East, refreshing, golden-coloured mint tea and strong, sweet coffee (sometimes called Turkish coffee) are drunk wherever people gather to talk and relax, a legacy of French rule. If available, try Medea, Mansourah and Mascara red wines and Medea, Mascara and Lismara rosés.

Advantages:

Algeria is a beguiling blend of cultures spanning a vast chunk of land - taking in everything from whitewashed fishing ports, verdant hillsides and olive groves to the unmatched dramatic landscapes of the Sahara Desert and the Hoggar Mountains. With more than four-fifths of its territory covered by the Sahara, the desert is Algeria’s most striking feature and its big-gest draw to travellers. But the north of the country, colonised by the Phoenicians and the Romans and covered with fascinat-ing ruined cities is green and fertile, and the imposing capital Algiers (‘the White City’) has a fascinating Medina to explore and offers and interesting perspective on modern Algerian life.

Food & Drinks

Portugal has a very rich cuisine. We are of the countries where they eat more fish and the basis of our food is Mediterranean. With a vast coastline, seafood plays a major part in Portuguese cuisine and the quality of our seafood and freshly caught grilled fish is beyond compare. But meat also forms part of the nation’s preferences. And cozido à portuguesa - a succulent boiled mixture of meats, vegetables and stuffed sausages - is one of the most appetising recipes in the world. If you are in the North, you can also savour tripe (tripas) cooked in the style of Oporto, and a type of feijoada, which can also be made à la transmontana in the interior of the region. In the Alentejo, the bread-based açorda and migas are two unmissable delights and if you travel near Bairrada do not miss the opportunity to savour the famous Leitão assado (roast suckling pig).

Regional drinks: Portugal is famous for its fortifies wines: Porto and Madeira. Port comes from the Douro region and Madeira from the is-land. These are great wines for an aperitif or as a degestif after a meal. However, Portuguese wine culture and expertise does not end with its fortified wines. The Douro region has become one the most famous region in the world for its DOC wines.

Holidays: The most outstanding celebration is the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, which is held in January all over Old San Juan but mainly on San Sebastián Street. The festival began as a celebration by a local priest to commemorate the life of Saint Se-bastian, a martyr who died in the name of Christianity. Residents of Old San Juan wanted to bring back the event. They would deco-rate their balconies, religious processions would take place on the streets, and local artists would exhibit their paintings or sculp-tures, creating an impromptu street market. Some 40 years later, these practices remain intact, with one small difference. What was once a small crowd of residents has now become a national event attended by tens of thousands of revelers each year.

Food & Drinks

Our culinary tradition spans centuries and combines Taíno, Spanish and African cultures, recipes and ingredients. In recent years, it’s been combined with flavors from around the world to create mouth-watering fusion and nouveau Rican creations. From gourmet fine dining to roadside kiosks, you will love exploring our menus and discovering the many tastes of the island. And you haven’t tasted our food, you haven’t truly expe-rienced Puerto Rico. As we say in Puerto Rico, ¡buen provecho!

Regional drinks: Coffee growing has a rich history on the island; the volcanic soil and moist climate of Puerto Rico’s mountainous interior make for perfect coffee-growing conditions, and its growing artisanal industry produces some of the finest coffee in the world. We’re also the only rum-producing country to enforce a strict minimum-aging law for every one of our rums, and that makes our rum exceptionally smooth. And, of course, we’re the birth-place of the most famous rum cocktail in the world: the piña colada.

Advantages: Puerto Rico brings you the best of the Caribbean: over 270 miles of white-sand beaches, balmy temperatures throughout the year (we never get into the triple digits), tropical flavors and rhythms, and of course, plenty of rum! But did you know that, even among its fellow Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico stands out? Take a closer look at what makes our island spe-cial… even by Caribbean standards.

National Traditions

Location: Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island located be-tween the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. What oil is to Texas, beer is to Denmark. Something like 440 million litres of Danish beer are exported annually – or three quarters of a billion pints. So you should definitely not leave the country withouth having tried Carlsberg or Tuborg beer. The favoured spirits are either snaps, which is potato-based and a concoction called Gammel Dansk(Old Danish). Usually they are drunk for Christmas lunch or Easter lunch. Next to beer, young Danes also like to get drunk on liquorice schnapps and alkopops.

Advantages:

Beautiful and humble people, free-spirited way of thinking, lots of new architecture mixed with old historical and creative city parts, Scandinavian fash-ion and design, great food, atmosphere and friendly people.

Food:Romania has had influence from both invaders and neighbors where it’s traditional cuisine is concerned. Romania’s traditional food sees touches of Turkish, Hungarian, Austrian, and other cuisines, but over the years, these dishes have become just as traditional as the oldest Romanian traditional foods. Some main local dishes are:

* sarmale – minced meat, rice, onions and spices are mixed and then rolled into grape or cabbage leaves * mititei (mici) – grilled, longish and spiced meatballs usually made from beef meat or mixed beef and mutton meat * mamaliga (polenta) – made out of yellow maize cooked in boiling water with salt; when cold, it can be cut into slices just like bread; usually served hot mixed with cheese and eggs * tochitura Moldavian stew with fried egg and grated cheese served with polenta * ciorba – the Romanian sour soup is prepared by poultry meat and vegetables

Drinks:

Palinca is the strongest of drinks, containing 60% pure alcohol. Then comes ţuica, usually made of plums but lately produced in other flavours as well, with 40% pure alcohol. Many Romanians living in rural arease produce these two drinks by themselves at home. Wine is next, Romania is a big wine producer and some of the best wineries are Murfatlar, Cotnari, Bohotin, Jidvei. Beer in Romania is cheap. The most important local brand is Ursus, but you can find many international brands.

Advantages:

Bucharest is located in the southeastern part of Romania. Just like many Eastern European capital cities, Bu-charest was built on the banks of a river – the Dambovita. Bucharest has been the capital of Romania since the 19th century. Now it is a modern and jouyfull city, where you can visited a lot of interesting sites and also have a lot of fun. Fans of museums will enjoy Bucharest as there is many to choose from. On the other hand, if you want to go straight to the big attractions, you can visit the Parliament Palace – the 2nd largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon, the Univeraity Square or the Metropolitan Church. There are also a lot of clubs for each kind of music and they are opened until 5 or 6 in the morning! Everybody is very kind and there are a lot of beautiful girls.:) Bucharest is a great starting point from which to explore the rest of the country. Away from the buzz of the city, you will find a different side of Romania – life in the coun-tryside moves more slowly, the air is crisp and hospitality abounds. At 120km from Bucharest you’ll find many mountain resorts, where you can go skiing in the winter and climbing in the summer. There are also two well-knowed castles: Peles and Pelisor.

Sweets:

* cozonac – cake prepared during Christmas or Easter; it’s a cake, bread shaped with different fillings de-pending on the baker (raisins, nuts, cocoa, etc.) * papanasi - pancakes with sweet cheese, cream and comfitures * clatite - pancakes filled with cheese, chocolate or jam

Iasi: known as The Cultural Capital of Romania is the second most populous city and a municipality in Romania. Located in the historical Moldavia region, Iaşi has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic life. The city was the capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918. Still referred to as The Moldavian Capital, Iasi is the seat of Iasi County and the main economic centre of the Romanian region of Moldavia.

The Dental Medicine Faculty of Iasi was created in 1945 as a department of the Medicine Faculty under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Nicolae Dutescu, being at that time the first faculty of this profile from the country. Since 1965 it functions as an independent faculty with 6-years full-time courses. After 1989 and especially since 1992 our faculty has been going through a continuous developing process, increas-ing the number of the staff and of the students and modernizing the specialized clinics endowing them with a modern material basis in accordance with the exigencies of the third millennium.

The Faculty of Dental Medicine from Iasi, combining harmoniously the tradition, symbol of the funda-mental and the stability, with the newest demands of the European exigencies, opens warmly its gates for those who are interested in Dental Medicine’s academic environment.

AdvantagesMalta is a modern and safe European country. English is an official language together with Maltese, however Italian is also known. There is always something to do in Malta as it practically never sleeps! Night clubs are open till 4am and the drinking age is that of 17. There are some beautiful picturesque beaches around the Maltese Is-lands. During your stay in Malta, island hopping is a pos-sibility and can be done at extremely cheap prices. Malta is also a country rich in history, in fact 7000 years of it!

Our Island boasts a brand new general hospital called Mater Dei which opened early 2008 and thus our dental surgery department is brand new and state-of-the art. The whole of the hospital is fully air-conditioned, we use a digital x-ray system over a network, all our dental units have fibre optics and each dental surgery student has his/her own unit as is shown in the photo below.
