On the cover: New Mooresville Classroom Building

An Equal Opportunity College/Affirmative Action Employer

PresidentDear Alumni and Friends:

The corner of Iredell Avenue and Academy Streets in

Mooresville will never be the same again. The new, imposing

Mitchell Community College Mooresville Classroom Building

has claimed that corner as the outpost for post-secondary

education in Mooresville and South Iredell for the future.

With twelve classrooms, two laboratories, plus an auditorium/

lecture hall that seats 140, the College is well positioned to

serve the growing population of the southern end of Iredell

County. Student response has been dramatic: enrollment

in Mooresville grew by over 500 students this fall with the

opening of the new building. Clearly the College is on track to

provide more classes, programs, and services for students in the Mooresville/South Iredell area.

In addition, the new building is equipped with the latest in information technology including

campus-wide wireless access for students wherever they may be on campus or on the grounds.

While buildings, facilities, and technology are important, it is the learning and teaching that

take place that make the real difference.

As evidence that we are successful in our endeavors, Mitchell was notified late this spring

that the College was recognized for “Exceptional Institutional Performance” by the North

Carolina Community College System. As you will see in this issue, the College was evaluated

on eight student and institutional performance measures. Not only did the college meet all of

the measures, it exceeded each of them. In addition, 97% of the graduating associate degree

nursing students passed the state licensure exam (NCLEX) and are now registered nurses and

licensed to practice in North Carolina. By the way, this is the same licensure exam that four-

year college and university graduates take. Our Rocketry team from our physics department

was one of only three teams invited to participate in Level 2 of NASA’s University Student

Launch Initiative program at Wallops Island proving grounds in Virginia. Even more exciting

is the growing number of students majoring in Biology, Engineering, Math or Physics and who

are successfully continuing their studies at colleges and universities.

From another perspective, the College continues to support and nurture local business

and industry through our engineering, drafting, welding, and HVAC programs as well as our

New and Expanding Industry program. The Acumma Corporation award highlighted in this

edition is a case in point, and the support of Kewaunee through our Advance Manufacturing

program is making a real difference for one of our strongest industries.

While new buildings are important in carrying out the mission of the College, they are not

as important as the learning that goes on inside them. Mitchell is truly a student-centered

institution in every sense of the term. Having excellent facilities only enhances our aspiration

to be an institution of educational excellence.

Sincerely yours,

Douglas O. Eason, Ph.D.President

Creating SuccessThrough Quality

Mitchell Community College is one of 12 community colleges to be recognized for Exceptional Institutional Performance (EIP), according to the 2011 Critical Success Factors report. The annual report is the North Carolina Community College System’s method for tracking the performance of the state’s community colleges as mandated by the General Assembly. The report compiles data related to eight performance measures. To achieve EIP, the college must meet or exceed all eight measures. These include:1. Progress of basic skill

students. The aggregate percentage of adult literacy

students completing a level of literacy, progressing within a level of literacy, or completing a predetermined goal.

2. Passing rates on licensure and certification exams. The percentage of first-time testers passing examination required by the state—nursing, cosmetology, basic law enforcement, emergency medical technician, real estate, etc.

3. Performance of college transfer students. Of students transferring to a university with an associate degree or 24 articulated college transfer hours, the percentage of students

who have a GPA equal or greater than a 2.0 after two semesters.

4. Passing rate of students in development courses. The percentage of development course completers in English or math completing with a grade of “C” or better.

5. Success rate of developmental students in subsequent college-level courses. The performance of completers who subsequently took college-level English or math.

6. Satisfaction of program completers and non-completers. The percentage of graduates or early-leavers “very

satisfied” or satisfied with the overall quality of the college.

7. Curriculum student retention, graduation, and transfer. The percentage of fall credential-seeking students who have graduated or are still enrolled at the same college, a university, or another community college one year later.

8. Client satisfaction with customized training. The percentage of satisfied clients receiving specialized training programs and service through Customized Training and Small Business Centers.

efficiency.

“Our goal is to help

companies be more efficient

and more profitable,” said

Betty Scipione, Mitchell’s

Director of Customized

Training. “Improving

productivity is critical for

US businesses to compete

globally.”

Mitchell has delivered over

1,100 customized training

hours to over 1,500 employees

in Iredell county.

Customized Training Helps Companies Compete

The Accuma Corporation

established its Statesville,

North Carolina facility in

1985 and produces injection

molded plastic containers, lids,

and accessories for the battery

manufacturing industry.

In 2011, Accuma tapped

Customized Training resources

at Mitchell Community

College to improve efficiency.

Accuma recognized that

machinery set-ups are

its single biggest cause of

downtime with an average

of 2.5 hours to change from

one mold to the next. With

Mitchell’s help, Accuma

assembled an employee

team to better organize the

process and area. “The target

was to reduce set-up time

by 50%,” said David Beard,

Mitchell’s Lean Manufacturing

Facilitator. Beard coached

the team to videotape, collect

data, and analyze operator

movements. The resulting plan

reduced time and eliminated

wasted steps.

“The results were better

than expected and will help

us stay competitive in today’s

market. We learned how

workplace organization and

standard work documentation

could help us understand

the problem, identify causes,

implement solutions and get

the rest of the plant excited

about making changes,” said

Howard Henderson, Accuma’s

Safety Manager.

At three set-ups per week,

52 weeks a year, the company

was able to add over 200

hours of capacity for one

machine. The next steps are to

implement the same process

improvements to more than

20 other molding machines

in the facility. The success of

this event led to Accuma’s

recognition as a winner of a

2011 Advanced Manufacturing

Awards by the Centralina

Economic Development

Commission in the Process

Improvement category.

Training in Progress for Kewaunee Scientific Corporation

Mitchell Gets New 5-Axis CNC Machine CenterThe mechanical engineering

department purchased a new

Haas VF-2 CNC (Computer

Numerical Control) 5-Axis

Machining Center this

summer. Training on this

new $105,000 machine will

begin spring semester as a

component of the Advanced

CNC Graphics Milling course.

Many industries today,

especially in the high-

tech world of aerospace ,

motorsports, automotive

design, medical, and high-

end machine shops, are using

5-axis machining as a means

to speed manufacturing

ability and increase repeatable

accuracy. The ability to

machine complex shapes,

undercuts and difficult angles

in a single setup reduces

tooling cost and labor time,

resulting in a better cost

per part, in addition to

maintaining parts conformity

throughout the part run.

“This is a great addition for

our program,” said Sharon

Rouse, program coordinator.

“Getting students trained on

5-axis machining will help

them secure good-paying

jobs.”

The 2010-2011

Occupational Outlook

Handbook indicated there

were 157,800 CNC machinists

in the U.S. in 2008 and

they projected there would

be 164,500 by 2018, a four

percent increase. Area

recruiters indicate that CNC

machinist jobs are available

and that salaries can range

from $43-60K per year

depending on experience.

Salaries for 5-axis operators

would be higher.

“Manufacturing has

changed,” added Rouse. “Jobs

now require technical know-

how and critical thinking skills

for complex and custom type

work.”

Several students who have

completed the program plan

to return in the spring to

take the course in order to

increase their salary potential.

An Associate in Applied

Science degree in mechanical

engineering can be completed

in 68-70 credit hours. Or, a

student can receive a certificate

in machining in 17 credit

hours.

Sharon Rouse, coordinator/instructor with new 5-axis machine.

Kewaunee Scientific

Corporation has been a leader

in the design, manufacture,

and installation of scientific

and technical furniture for

over 104 years. In February

2010 they announced plans for

the expansion and renovation

of its Statesville operations.

Construction is complete on a

32,000 square foot addition to

one of its three manufacturing

plants in Statesville, as well

as a facelift for the corporate

and administrative offices. The

expansion was made to handle

a growing demand for the

Company's products.

Along with the corporate

and manufacturing expansion,

Kewaunee is using customized

training to improve the

work skills of incumbent

leaders and teams within

the organization. Betty

Scipione, Mitchell Community

College’s Customized

Training Director, met with

company representatives

and formulated an in-depth

selection of communication,

problem solving, leadership,

and teamwork topics to

assist Kewaunee in this new

phase of their operations.

One component will be Lean

Manufacturing training,

provided by a certified Lean/

Six Sigma instructor. All other

training for the project will

be provided by the Regional

North Carolina Community

College System and third-

party trainers local to Iredell

County.

Kewaunee is headquartered

in Statesville and has

manufacturing facilities in

Statesville and Bangalore,

India. Subsidiaries in

Singapore and Bangalore

serve their Asian and Middle

East markets. The company

currently has 470 local

employees in Statesville.

Students Study in Costa Rica

The first Study Abroad

Program, "Costa Rica: Coast

to Coast," took place in May.

Participants traveled to both

the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts

of Costa Rica. The trip offered

diverse cultural and ecological

experiences such as volcanoes,

hot springs, rainforests, a

banana plantation, cities, and

villages. Students learned

much about life in a foreign

country while discovering a lot

about themselves. In addition,

they made friends, helped

local school children, and

had fun while on an exciting

adventure.

“This was a great experience

and we look forward to more,”

said Eduardo Garcia, program

coordinator. “It is our goal to

make the world our classroom,

where students can build upon

their personal stories to help

them in their journey toward a

future full of possibilities.”

The program, which is

part of Education First (EF)

College Study Tours, is part

of Mitchell’s commitment to

global education. In addition

to the cultural and educational

experiences provided by such

a trip, students also have

the option to earn college

credit for an interdisciplinary

humanities course.

Vanessa Darnell ‘10 came to

Mitchell to continue her study

of cosmetology, a program she

started in high school at East

Wilkes.

“I looked at several

programs in the area but I

was so impressed with the

quality of Mitchell’s program

and the faculty members I

met there,” said Darnell. “I

was particularly interested in

focusing on esthetics since

more people have taken a

greater interest in skin care.”

She is sure she made the

right choice. In the beginning,

studying and passing tests

were tough but instructor

Sally Lindsay pushed and

encouraged Darnell. “She

really helped me build my

confidence,” said Darnell. “She

wouldn’t let me give up.”

One of Lindsay’s projects

is to have students build a

salon, an exercise designed to

help students understand the

business side of cosmetology.

“I have my students find

a location, negotiate a lease,

and create a business plan in

order to apply for a loan,” said

Lindsay.

This exercise paid off for

Darnell when she decided to

open her salon this year.

“I was able to apply what

I learned in class. It took

going back to the bank

multiple times but with

my determination and Ms.

Lindsay’s continued support

and guidance—I did it!” said

Darnell. “Even though I had

graduated, she was still there

for me.”

Local “Stars” Dance for ScholarshipsLocal “stars” will pair with area dance professionals for the 2011 Dancing with the Iredell Stars. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Statesville Civic Center. Proceeds which come from sponsorships, ticket sales and voting will benefit the Mitchell Community College Endowment for Excellence (MCCEE) Scholarship Fund. Fans, co-workers, friends, family, and event attendees vote for their favorite dancer prior to or during the night of the event. There is no limit on how many times or for how many dancers one can vote. There will be two winners, the People’s Choice based on the most monetary votes received and the Judges’ Choice. “It looks like this year’s event might be another sellout!” said Harry Stillerman, director for development. Table and tickets sales are going strong. “Last year we were able to award 22 scholarships,” added Stillerman. “This year we hope to double that.” The evening will include exhibition performances by students from the Visual and Performing Arts Center, Iredell-Statesville Schools/Early College and the Havana Ballroom. Tickets are $75 and votes are $5 and are tax-deductible. For more information, visit www.mitchellcc.edu/dancing or call (704) 878-4321.
