Introduction
• This slideshow contains some information about Mungo Park, an explorer famous for sailing along the Niger River for 13,500 kilometres .
Early Life• Mungo Park was
born in Selkirkshire, Scotland on the 10th of September 1771. He was the 7th child of a hard working farmer. Mungo’s Dad died when he was 10.
First Job
• In 1785 Mungo Park trained to be a surgeon at the age of 14 and also studied medicine and botany.
First Journey- 1793
• In 1793 Mungo sailed from Worcester, England to Indonesia. On that trip he discovered 8 new fish and rare plants.
Second Journey- 1796On his second journey Mungo Park sailed from
England to the Niger River in Africa and was funded by a rich man called Sir Joseph Banks and he had some close encounters but he managed to stay
alive.
Well at least for a while...Because he sadly was never heard of again in Gambia in 1805
Timeline• 1771- Born on September the 10, 1771 in Selkirkshire,

• 1785-Learnt to be a surgeon at age 14.
• 1788- Studied medicine and botany at university.
• 1793- He became an assistant surgeon.
• 1793- He sailed from Worcester to Indonesia.
• 1793- Discovered 8 new fish and rare plants.
• 1794- Married Allison Park.
• 1805- Sadly never seen again in Gambia.
On this journey, Mungo Park needed a horse, a compass
and a caravel boat. The compass works because it
always points to north and if you know the order of the
points you can tell which to go.
