WINTER/ SPRING 2020 EX LIBRIS Charting the Course Essex Library to launch Strategic Plan in 2020 In January 2020, the Essex Library Board of Trustees launched a strategic frameworking process. Led by Board of Trustees Vice President Kathy Bonomi, the library’s Strategic Planning Committee will work over the coming year to chart our vision and goals for the next several years. Strategic Planning is a process that organizations use to align allocation of resources and spending with mission, values, and community needs. In Essex Library’s case, strategic planning will provide an opportunity for the library’s trustees and staff to hear what the community values and needs from the library now and in the future. The committee will gather feedback through a series of focus groups and listening sessions, then chart a path for actionable goals to realize this vision. In the late spring and summer, the library will hold a series of sessions and surveys to collect input from patrons and residents about our strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities. This inval- uable community feedback will then be analyzed to identify themes and ideas. The library’s budgeting process will then align to these strategic priorities. We invite you to partner with us by attending focus groups or reaching out to the committee directly to share thoughts and feedback. We’ll share the dates of focus groups as they are scheduled on our website and via our monthly Elations news- letter. We hope to see you at a session and look forward to hearing how we can best continue to provide the high quality of services you have come to rely on at the library. WINTER/SPRING 2020 EX LIBRIS

Charting the Course Essex Library to launch Strategic Plan in 2020

In January 2020, the Essex Library Board of Trustees launched a strategic frameworking process. This inval-uable community feedback will then be analyzed to identify themes and ideas. The library’s budgeting process will then align to these strategic priorities. We invite you to partner with us by attending focus groups or reaching out to the committee directly to share thoughts and feedback. We’ll share the dates of focus groups as they are scheduled on our website and via our monthly Elations news-letter. We hope to see you at a session and look forward to hearing how we can best continue to provide the high quality of services you have come to rely on at the library.

From the Director

It was with delight and ex-citement that I joined the li-brary as Executive Director in July 2019. Eight months later, I’m still amazed by the full range of services we pro-vide and the generosity of so many residents in supporting us each year.

The old adage that “it takes a village” is especially impres-sive in our case considering

we serve, and are supported by, residents across all three! In this issue of Ex Libris it is my honor to ex-tend our deep and heartfelt thanks to the donors who supported us last year and are already doing so this year. The library counts on your annual gifts each year to meet 25% of our operating expenses. Simply put, we can’t do it without you. Thank you!

As you know, we are “Your Community Center for Lifelong Learning and Cultural Enrichment.” In this issue, we share some of the numbers that illustrate ex-actly how we deliver on this mission each year. We also share updates about recent projects and our plans to get your input through a strategic planning process so we can better meet your needs over the coming years.

I’ve enjoyed meeting many of you and am always ea-ger to see you at the library. If you haven’t visited yet this year, please stop by and let us connect you with a wide variety of resources, from the educational to the entertaining or enriching.

Many residents know the name of early library benefac-tor Captain Joseph Tucker. In 1897, Tucker’s estate be-queathed $5,000 for construction of a permanent site for the library at 3 South Main Street. But the library was actually started several years before, in 1889 as the brainchild of Willis Russell. Russell, a doctor whose office was located in the build-ing currently occupied by Talbot’s, donated 50 of his own books and invited other residents to join him in building a small lending library. Russell’s medical of-fices were on the ground floor of the building and the library, which quickly grew to 600 volumes, was housed on the 2nd floor. Starting in 2020, Essex Library will celebrate Willis Russell’s philanthropic initiative and community focus during our annual Founder’s Days. Mark your calendar to join us on June 12th (Russell’s birthday) and the Satur-day following. As we thank our many volunteers and donors, we’ll have a tour of the library and free refresh-ments—including birthday cake!

Thank you to

ELAted—Curated!

On Saturday, February 29th, ELA Executive Director Deb Smith and Lisa Timothy (Executive Director, East Lyme Public Library) presented at the Connecticut Digi-tal Humanities Conference at Trinity College. Smith and Timothy, who both serve on the Board of Libraries Online, discussed training public librarians in the creation of digital local history collections using Omeka, a platform familiar to historians and academic librarians but less well known to public librarians. Prior to joining Essex Library, Smith completed the Creating Local Linkages training for public librarians offered by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. She is now utilizing this background to develop a digital local histo-ry portal for the library, working with staff to scan, cata-log, and describe items from the library’s existing ar-chival collections. The working goal is to make this con-tent easily accessible to the public via the library’s web-site. Starting with the library’s own historical materials, a small collection of 20 documents (including past is-sues of Ex Libris) has already been scanned and de-

scribed. Stay tuned! We will launch the collection pub-licly during our Founder’s Day celebration on June 12th.
