DIRECTIONS FOR AFTERSCHOOL PICK UP IN CIRCLE Our goal is to not only keep traffic flowing in and out of the circle onto the main road, but to also minimize
traffic both in the circle and on the main road. PLEASE be mindful and aware of our traffic flow
If you’re using the circle for pick up, please make sure that you’re following procedures for the SAFETY of your child(ren). If you’re not willing or able to follow procedures, PLEASE PARK ON THE ROAD and pick up your children from class
PLEASE drive to the FARTHEST POINT in the circle. DO NOT hold up or slow the flow of traffic
DO NOT leave car UNATTENDED OR PARK in the circle. Please stay in the car to allow the flow of the circle to go smoothly. If not, please park on the main road
Move your car accordingly to close the gap, as cars go out of the circle…this helps to lessen the traffic in the circle and on the main road.
While in the circle, please DO NOT park too close to the car in front of you. This allows you to drive out of that lane as soon as your child gets in the car or you will be stuck
As always, PLEASE WATCH Ms. Tee/Mr. Sega and any of our Staff that are overseeing the circle, as they flag you down for your kids. DO NOT move your car unless you are indicated to do so
DO NOT signal for your children to come between cars…For the sake of safety, please drive up to Ms. Tee/Mr. Sega/Staff in the outer lane of the circle, for us to be able to place your children safely in your cars
Once the JPOs’ shift has ended and they leave the circle, please feel free to drop off, wait and or park in the circle or bus terminal
Please DO NOT SPEED in the circle for the SAFETY of ALL of our children & families
NO LEFT TURNS from the circle entrance from 7:30-8:00 am and in the afternoons daily.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS!!! 1. PLEASE..PLEASE..PLEASE call our He’eia Office for an Off Campus release form/pass, due to Doctor & Dental appointments or other reasons. This allows us to help you in having your child(ren) readily waiting for you in the office with their belongings, and helps to alleviate confusion, mixups and the disruption of instructional learning.
2. Please update all phone numbers and emergency contacts for our records.
3. Please DO NOT send your child(ren) to school sick. Students with diarrhea, fever, throw up, fractions, serious head injuries, pink eye, unexplainable rashes, hacking coughs, and green and yellow mucus, are an automatic send home once they come to the Health Room
4. School gets out on Mon-Fri at 2:05 pm, with the exception of Wednesday when school gets out at 1:20 pm. Please make arrangements to have your child(ren) picked up ON TIME. Please call the Office when making arrangements for your child to be picked up by someone else other than yourself, or if you’ll be late in pick up.
5. Please make sure that your child’s meal tracker account has enough money for your child to make meal purchases. Notifications on negative balances will be sent out.
6. School wide notices will sent out weekly in Thursday envelopes. Please read through all newsletters, notices, and forms to be currently updated on information you may need to know.

Science Lab – The students have been exploring and investigating science concepts in our lab during rotation, everything from circuits and straw rockets in 6th grade, flight in 5th, sound in 4th, weather instruments and metric measurement in 3rd, magnets in 2nd, the water cycle in 1st, and buoyancy in K. Science Fair – 6th and 5th grade students conducted science experiments over winter break, and returned with their wonderful display boards. Six projects were selected from the 6th grade to represent Heeia Elementary at the Windward District Science Fair, which was held Friday, Jan 29, at WCC. After explaining their projects to the judges, our students got to participate in several hands-on science demonstrations and visit the planitarium. Robotics – We have 15 6th and 15 5th grade students participating in our robotics program on Wednesdays. The students design, build and program robots to perform certain functions such as throwing a ball. On Saturday, Jan 23, a 5th grade team and a 6th grade team participated in our first elementary level VEX IQ robotics challenge, hosted by Kapunahala Elem. A great time was had by all, and the students gained lots of insight for their next designs.
LOST & FOUND
We have a lost and found barrel that we keep next to the custodian
room and workroom. There are times when lost and found items are
placed on the rail in the main hallway, so that as students and families
are passing by, they’ll claim these lost items. If your child(ren) have
items that are missing or they may have forgotten at school, please feel
free to check our Lost and Found barrel.
Aloha & Happy February! Thank you for your support for our new Site Coordinator Ms. Brandy Makekau, with her transition into her new role. We ask for your continued support, patience and understanding…especially with changes that are being made. Should you have any questions or concerns, please see Ms. Brandy. Sara Banks with Growing Pono Schools will be co-facilitating.Thank you for your kokua
Mrs. Taba, Mrs. Galindo, and Mrs. Tanaka
Kindergarten Aloha Parents & Guardians,
Our kindergartners are 100 days smarter! What a great celebration we had to mark this momentous occasion! We will be working hard in the coming months to get our kindergartners ready for the first grade. For the third quarter the students are learning to apply letter sound knowledge towards their reading and writing. Being able to express yourself verbally is very important in Language Arts. Please ask who, what, where, when and how questions at home. We had some awesome nerds in kindergarten for our January spirit day. You helped us win the spirit trophy again! Thank you. What’s ahead for our kindergartners? A field trip to the Living Art Marine Center this month. Please look out for the letter. It’ll be coming home soon.
As always mahalo for your continued support and follow through at home.
The Kindergarten Teachers
Grade 2 Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and have returned to school well rested. Things are in full swing with learning. To help your child get off to a good start we’d like to ask each child to bring a minimum of 6 pencils and 2 erasers to school. Many children have also exhausted their supply of colored pencils and may need another box. Mark your calendars. We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Friday, March 4. We are looking for energetic parent volunteers to read to our second graders. Please contact your child’s teacher is you are interested. We’d like to ask for your cooperation in ensuring that your child leaves their toys at home. We have noticed children trading their Shopkins toys with one another.
Grade 2 Teachers
Grade 6 WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A HAPPY NEW YEAR SCIENCE FAIR - Congratulations on a job well done 6th graders! The Science Experiment Exhibition was a success. Kudos to the following students who represented He’eia Elementary at the Windward District Science Fair on Friday, January 29: Justin Saavedra, Leia Aki, Isabella Flores, Tamryn Goo, Teijah Lee, Aoi Shigenaga
ATTENDANCE - Quarter 3 has begun and we have high expectations for your child’s learning. We know that you also have many hopes and dreams for your child’s success in school and beyond. To make sure those hopes and dreams are realized, we want to ask for your commitment by making sure your child attends school every day. Also, please refrain from leaving school early for doctors/dentists appointments. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement. Thank you for your support!
MAY DAY 2016 - May Day is on Friday, May 13! Our King and Queen tryouts were held on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Mahalo to everyone who tried out! Congratulations to our May Day King and Queen: Jack Thomas Carlisle and Rochele Kalauli

SAVE THE DATES - CPAC Field Trip: Wednesday, February 17, 2016
Promotion Ceremony: Thursday, May 26, 2016
Mrs. Baba, Mrs. Chang, Mrs. Gomes
Grade 3 Your child should be doing 2 or more Kid Biz a week, and get 75% or higher on the Activity. We notice that there's only a handful of students doing their weekly Kid Biz. Your child also needs to study their multiplication and division flash cards at least three times a week, and get the multiplication and division homework checklist signed. The KId Biz and studying their multiplication and division facts will help them when they take their SBA test in April. This is an important state wide test that students in 3rd to 6th grade take. Please be on the lookout for the IXL calendar. Students need to do it twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Our Dr. Seuss Read-Aloud Day will be on Friday, March 4th. If you are able to read to our classes, we would love to have you be a guest reader. Please let your child's homeroom teacher know.
Grade 1 In January, the first graders had a very busy start of 2016. We enjoyed the 4-day weeks and the 3-day weekends, but it was finally good to be able to settle back into our routines and “grow” and learn with our friends! On the 14th of January, the first graders went on a very interesting field trip to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, in Moiliili. We learned all about the Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and of the sacrifices they made to come to a new land. We experienced a bit of the sugar plantation lifestyle as we made a gallery tour and saw pictures and artifacts from the plantation era. We even recognized some of the traditional artifacts like the Maneki Neko and the Daruma. (You see these figurines in stores and restaurants.) Students got to play with traditional Japanese toys and learned a bon dance, too! Everyone enjoyed this field trip and learned a lot about the values, customs, and traditions of the Japanese people. This month has us busy with the many holiday themes: Chinese New Year, which is on February 8th; Valentine’s Day on the 14th; and Presidents’ Day on the 15th. We will be attending the Castle Performing Arts presentation with the rest of the grades on the 17th of February. Besides that, we continue to work on Math, Reading, Social Studies and Science! Until next month. . . The First Graders Mrs. Upton and Mrs. Kaio
