Overview

IntroductionThank you for choosing the Sibelius Sound Set Project for your Sibelius playback needs. The sound set you have purchased or downloaded is designed to make the sounds of the associated MIDI device or sample library available in an intuitive and familiar manner. Care has been taken to provide the deepest possible integration so you can spend more time writing music and less time dealing with complex technical details.

From time to time sound sets are updated to improve integration, add new features or provide fixes for problems that have been discovered. Please check the Sound Set Proj-ect webpage (http://soundsets.jonathanloving.com) for news regarding any updates or sign up for the email newsletter for the most up-to-date information.

If you have any suggestions or comments about the sound sets, ideas for improvement or any other feedback, please use the contact information in the back of this setup guide. Your feedback is valued and all comments are taken into consideration for future im-provements.

I hope you enjoy working with these resources and find that technology no longer has to hinder the creative process; instead, it can enhance it.

All the best,

Jonathan Loving

Using the Sound Set

Creating a New ScoreTo begin, run the “New Score” wizard and select a Manuscript Paper option. The EWQL-SO [Play] v3 sound set uses a House Style file with additional instrument staffs to access all instruments in the library which need to be included in the instrument list before pro-ceeding with your score creation. To use these staffs, after select-ing a Manuscript Paper option, click the Next button to proceed to the House Styles page. Select the “EWQLSO [Play v3]” House Style that corresponds to your version of Sibelius and the library, as shown in the image at the right. Then go back to the previous

screen and select “Change Instruments.”

From the Add Instruments dialog you can now continue adding in-struments to your score. The EWQLSO [Play] v3 Instrument group contains custom instrument staffs for every patch in the EWQLSO library. All instruments you wish to playback using the EWQLSO sounds should be added to the score using the EWQLSO [Play] v3 Instrument group. After making your instrument selections, con-tinue through the “New Score” wizard to set up the rest of the score’s parameters and click on “Finish” when done.

NOTE: You do not have to select the House Style during score set-up. Alternatively you can Import it into the score later and then

add instruments from the EWQLSO [Play] v3 Instrument group. See Converting Scores for instructions to Import the House Style.

Open the playback device settings from Play>Playback in Sibelius’s menu. Use the drop-down list at the top of this dialog to select one of the EWQLSO v3 playback configura-tions you installed. Once selected seven PLAY instances will appear in the Active Devices pane. Load the corresponding instrument multi into each PLAY instance. For more information, see Playback Configuration and Multis below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Sibelius will not save loaded instruments or changes made to those in-struments with the score. After loading and assigning the patches to the proper channel, you can name a new playback configuration for your score and save the configuration. Sibelius will then load the appropriate sounds when that score is opened. Alternatively you can save the PLAY instance as a .ewi file or .fxp file and manually load the sounds each time the score is opened.

7Chapter 2: Using the Sound Set

Converting ScoresIn order to use all of the sounds defined in the sound set with an existing score you must use the provided House Style file. Import the “EWQLSO [Play] v3” House Style for your version of Sibelius and the library from House Style>Import in Sibelius’s menu. Select “EWQLSO [Play] v3” from the list of House Styles and select the import options as shown in the images below. It’s very important that you select only the options indicated in order to preserve the layout and formatting of your score.

Sibelius 5 Sibelius 6

Unpitched percussion instruments as well as any brass or woodwind staffs that you want to playback using ensemble patches will need to be modified. To convert an in-strument select the entire staff (triple-click) and create an instrument change from Create>Other>Instrument Change in Sibelius’s menu. Select the appropriate unpitched percussion, brass or woodwind ensemble instrument from the EWQLSO [Play] instru-ment group and click OK. Do this for as many staffs as required in your score.

Playback Configuration and MultisThe multi files (.ewi) in combination with the provided Playback Configurations provide a streamlined and modular system for loading the sounds your score requires quickly and efficiently. The playback configurations define channels for all Master KS instruments in EWQLSO and in some cases additional articulations not found in the KS definitions.

Multis are divided by instrument family and further by solo and ensemble instruments allowing you to load what you need without loading unnecessary sounds and straining system resources. A combination of multis and individual instrument loading will result in the most efficient use of your systems capabilities. For example, if a score requires string orchestra, brass, and a solo flute the best approach is to load the brass and strings multis, and load the solo flute KS instrument individually rather than using the solo woodwinds multi.

Regardless of which multis you use, the first time you attempt to load a multi you will receive a “Samples Missing” error. When this happens, click “Ok” in the dialog and

Page 10: EWQLSO Sound Set User Manual

8Chapter 2: Using the Sound Set

point PLAY to the root of the EWQLSO library on your system as shown in the image be-low. PLAY will resolve all sample references in the current multi and begin loading the samples. When PLAY finishes loading the multi use Main Menu>Save in the PLAY plugin to overwrite the downloaded multi with the correct sample paths for your system. If you do not save the multi you will have to point PLAY to the samples every time you load a multi.

Multi TypesThere are two types of multis included for each instrument subsection, a “Master” and “Lite” version. Both types of multis include all instruments defined in the Playback Con-figurations, however the Lite multis only load essential articulations by default reducing the demands on system resources significantly. In almost all circumstances it is recom-mended to start with the Lite multis.

Articulations designated as essential vary between instrument families but are consistent for all instruments within a family. The following chart indicates which articulations are considered essential for each instrument family.

ESSENTIAL ARTICULATIONSArticulation Woodwinds Brass Strings

Legato x x xMute xMute Staccato xPizzicato xRelease Tails x x xStaccato x x xSustain x x xTremolo xTrills x x

If an articulation is needed that is not in the lists above it can be loaded manually for the instrument(s) that need it. Open the PLAY instance, select the instru-ment from the list at the top right of the interface and tick the “Load” box in the articulations display. This articulation will load and retain its default keyswitch assignment allowing Sibelius to use it immediately.

Playback Configuration Channel AssignmentsThe following table lists all of the channel assignments in the provided Playback Con-figurations separated by PLAY instance. Reference this table when loading multis or in-dividual instruments; if instruments are loaded to different channels than indicated they will not respond correctly in the score. Channels not listed are unassigned.

11Chapter 2: Using the Sound Set

Combining LibrariesThe EWQLSO [Play] v3 sound set can be easily combined with any other library or com-bination of libraries to expand the number of sounds available. Combining sound sets is a relatively straight-forward process, however there is a right and a wrong way to do it. If not done correctly, your score may suffer from incorrect or incomplete playback, and/or incorrect instrument allocation.

To combine other sound sets with the EWQLSO [Play] v3 sound set, begin by going to Play>Playback Devices in Sibelius’s menu and select one of the EWQLSO Playback Con-figurations provided with the sound set. Once selected, click “New” and supply a name that describes the configuration you are creating, i.e. “Play - EWQLSO v3 and Sib Es-sentials”. It’s important to always begin with one of the provided configurations so that the settings unique to the EWQLSO [Play] v3 sound set are not lost.

NOTE: If you are combining EWQLSO with a device/sound set for which Sibelius will be auto-loading sounds, DO NOT create this new configuration while a score is open. Close all scores before doing the steps below.

In your new configuration activate the appropriate device for the sound library you wish to use and assign the appropriate sound set to it. If this is a device/sound set that re-quires a Manual Sound Set to be defined, do so now for all instruments that will play from the device(s) you have added and load the sounds into the device to the channels you’ve assigned. A Manual Sound Set is not necessary for libraries Sibelius will be load-ing automatically.

Depending on what additional sound set(s) you have added, it’s possible that some in-strument sounds will be available in both EWQLSO and the added library. If this is the case, you must use the Preferred Sounds tab of the Playback Devices dialog to instruct Sibelius which device to use for a sound that is available in both libraries. By default, solo and ensemble woodwinds, brass, and strings are already assigned through Preferred Sounds to the appropriate PLAY instance in the provided EWQLSO playback configura-tions. Keyboard, unpitched and pitched percussion instruments, however, are not.

If, for example, your score contains a Piano and you add the Sibelius Essentials to your playback configuration Sibelius has pianos available in both sound sets from which to choose and may not assign the staff to the sound source you want to use. To remedy this, use the Preferred Sounds settings to select the ID “keyboard.piano.*” and assign it either to “Play (5)” if you want it to play from EWQLSO, or “Sibelius Player” if you want to use the Sibelius Essentials piano.

Continue editing the preferred sounds settings until all ‘duplicate’ instruments are as-signed to the appropriate device. Save the playback configuration and your scores will now allocate correctly using the desired settings.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Never use the Sibelius Mixer to assign a staff to a specfic device or sound in a library as this will cause allocation and other playback issues with your score. This should always be done using “Preferred Sounds”.

13Chapter 3: Percussion

Percussion

drum MapsEvery unpitched percussion patch in Symphonic Orchestra has been assigned a staff and drum map in the EWQLSO [Play] v3 House Style. These mappings use a combination of staff position, notehead, and articulation to call specific sounds from each instrument patch.

When working with unpitched instruments only one patch can be active at any one time on one staff. If you need multiple percussion instruments in the same percussion part, use Instrument Changes from Create>Other>Instrument Change in Sibelius’s menu to switch to and from the different instruments. Alternatively you can add each unpitched percussion instrument to your score as a separate staff.

If the instrument you need is not included in the default Playback Configuration you will need to use the Manual Sound Sets tab of the Playback Devices dialog to assign the needed instrument to a channel and load the sound manually.

In the drum maps that follow, patch/articulation is above and notehead number is below the staff. Depending on which version of Symphonic Orchestra you are using, these may not all be available.

MIdI Input MapThe MIDI input map is designed for users using a MIDI keyboard to input unpitched percussion notation. The mappings offer a consistent method for inputting the different techniques found in EWQLSO across every patch. Not all of the techniques shown are available in every version or instrument. Refer to the Drum Maps for what techniques are available in a specific patch.

In the input map that follows the technique is above and the MIDI note that notates it is below the staff. C4 is MIDI note 60 or Middle C. Where multiple variations of the same technique are indicated (i.e. Hits 1, 2 and 3) assignments always begin with the lowest number.

Some patches have left and right hand hits or other variations on the basic technique. Extended variations are indicated with colored noteheads. Colored noteheads are not exclusively linked to the extended variation and if no such variation is available in the patch those input notes will input the basic technique as indicated above the staff.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although the input maps will place notes at their correct location on the staff with the correct notehead mapped to the sound any additional articulations re-quired, such as tremolo slashes for rolls, will need to be added manually. Use the Drum Maps to determine which sounds require articulation markings.

19Chapter 4: Additional Setup and Tips

Additional Setup and Tips

Suggested Settings•Take advantage of PLAY’s ability to unload and/or purge any unused articulations,

especially when using PLAY as a plug-in or on a system with limited resources.

•Disable Sibelius’s reverb from the Play > Performance menu.

•Disable the Click Track from Preferences > Playback.

•Display Program Names rather than Sound IDs from Preferences > Playback.

•De-select “Use same slot for similar instruments” from Preferences > Playback.

•Select “Use variant sounds for identical instruments” from Preferences > Playback

Articulation ResetsEWQLSO contains many sounds and techniques that do not directly correspond to a standard notation marking as well as standard techniques that are better called using a text instruction. When using a text instruction for a change in sound that text instruction will remain in effect until explicity turned off. For example, a “pizzicato” instruction will play pizzicato until an “arco” instruction is found.

Using different text instructions without resetting the sound will result in inconsistent playback of your score. Although it may seem that everything is switching correctly, cer-tain combinations of sounds will not work and the issue will build throughout the score until playback is anything but what you have indicated.

To avoid these issues use the text instruction “normal” or another appropriate text entry (such as “arco”) to reset sound changes called by text instructions. The normal instruc-tion can be hidden in the score by placing a tilde before the word, “~normal”.

This method should also be employed when using a combination of text and articulation/line/symbols to call sound changes as the non-text instructions will reset but the text instruction will persist.
