What’s In A Name?Rabbi Naomi Kalish

At our annual conference last January we began an important conversation about our organization’s name. We decided to engage in a dialogue over the year and return to the topic at our 2013 conference. 2 NAJC Newsletter Kislev 5773/December 2012

Association: The primary professional chaplaincy organizations use the term “association” (American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, Canadian Association of Spiritual Care). The term “network” is gaining in popularity in general and has entered into the chaplaincy field with the Pediatric Chaplains Network and the Israel Jewish Spiritual Care Network of Organizations (רשת הארגונים לליווי רוחני How do the terms “association” and “network” resonate differently in our various professional .( יהודיcommunities?

Jewish: The עיקר (essence) of our association is that we are a specifically Jewish organization. While no one disputes including this in our title, we benefit from reflecting upon the meaning of our Jewishness. Does it refer to the identities of our membership? To the identities of our patients or clients? To the language and paradigms for conceptualizing our care-giving? How do we understand the Jewish diversity of our organization? How do Jewish chaplains benefit from an association of Jewish chaplains? How does the broader field of chaplaincy benefit from an organizational emphasis on difference, diversity and multiculturalism?

Chaplains: For over a century in the United States, the term ‘chaplain’ has been used for clergy and religious leaders who oversee chapels in the field, away from the main sanctuaries. These have included military, hospital, prison, and university contexts. What are the advantages and limitations of this term?

Professional: When the Association of Professional Chaplains was formed in 1996 (when the College of Chaplains separated from its parent organization, the American Protestant Hospital Association), its new name emphasized the professionalization of the field of chaplaincy. What are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a name that alludes to standards, accreditation, and certification?

Hebrew: Some Jewish organizations combine a Hebrew term with an English name, such as “Hiddur: The Center for Aging and Judaism” or “Clal: The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership” or “Hamakor: The Source for Everything Jewish.” What advantages and limitations would incorporating Hebrew into our name have?

Weaving together the strands to form a name:The final step in the art of creating a name is bringing the strands together in a meaningful and

effective way. Considerations include:•Do we want to change our name?•Do we want to retain the acronym NAJC (When the National Conference of Christians and Jews

renamed itself it retained its acronym NCCJ and became the National Conference for Community and Justice, reflecting its change in focus and mission while retaining its name recognition.

•If we want to keep the acronym NAJC, we could consider combining it with a Hebrew term, such as Neshama: The Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)

•If we want to retain the acronym NAJC but also reflect our international membership, we could opt for iNAJC: International Association of Jewish Chaplains

•We could remove the geographic qualifier and become AJC: Association of Jewish Chaplains. (How do we feel about two other major Jewish organizations having this acronym: American Jewish Committee and American Jewish Congress)?

Resume Best PracticesRabbi Daniel Coleman

Here are some “best practices” that I share after reviewing over 100 resumes for friends, fellow shul members, the OU and NAJC colleagues.

Sometimes clergy are overly humble. Perhaps we take our lead from Moses or God who hides and often appears in a cloud (if at all). When it comes to resumes however, don’t be shy. Now is not the time to be humble about your achievements. Start with your name. Ensure it is large, in bold, and any graduate degree is listed alongside it.

What’s your Unique Selling Point (USP)? Is there anything that makes you uniquely suited to the particular position/organization you are applying for? If yes, how have you conveyed this in your resume?

Have you done your homework and customized your resume accordingly? What do you know about the organization – its mission and values? What do you know about the previous occupant of the position – and what could you offer over and above what he/she did? Try to ensure it is evident to the prospective employer that you tailored your resume to the specifics of the job/organization, rather than spammed him/her with a generic resume?

Did you check for spelling/grammar mistakes? Is it presentable? Did you ask at least 2 people to give you their honest input before you send it off? (Be sure to tell them about the specific position you are applying for and the type of candidate they are likely looking for).

Don’t waste precious resume space or disrespect the reader’s time by stating your objective. You may instead wish to consider an attention-grabbing profile. Great examples of resumes can be found at www.getwhatyouset.com

The reader’s attention generally falls off rapidly as their eyes move down the page so make sure the most important information is at the top. Don’t spend 6 lines on your address and multiple contact information if you can put it in 3.

For each position you previously held, don’t list more than 4 or 5 maximum, try to convey what you or your employer was most proud of. What/how did you contribute to the success/mission of the team/facility? Did you institute a best practice/idea or new way of doing things that increased efficiency/impact or enhanced the visibility of your team/work? What did you do that was adopted by others or recognized/awarded?

If you’ve been out of college several years and are still putting your education at the top of your resume (and your GPA), you are wasting precious space. Readers want to know if you can do the job, not the specifics of your college education.

Do your hobbies really enhance your resume? Do they speak to something specific that the potential employer is looking for and you have been unable to convey this any other way? If not, leave them out. Spend your energy conveying your skills through your professional experience.

Less is more. Can you fit your resume onto one page? Examine each section? Is it repetitive? Does each position present the potential employer with new information about you that they could not have gleaned anywhere else? If not, consider deleting it or merging it with another position.

Don’t include references. If they want them, they’ll ask. If possible, use the last lines on your resume to highlight you and your talents e.g. list achievements/awards at the end.

A Message From Our Past PresidentRabbi Yaacov Rone, NAJC President

Dear Chevre,

Under normal circumstances, I would have written a small article for our Newsletter in order to send you greetings.

These past few months have not been “normal” for me. As some of you know, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at the end of May. My whole Summer was spent undergoing chemotherapy and I am now recovering from those treatments. It had sapped all of my strength and energy. The  fatigue just took over my life.

The good news is that the prognosis is most positive. I am waiting to meet with the surgeon who is due to schedule surgery the latter part of October.

Cecille, Naomi and Moe have kept me abreast of NAJC activities. Needless to say, I have been rather passive in this and all my other activities.

I do want to thank you for keeping me in your prayers as I wish each and every one of you a 5773 filled with good health and Shalom.

Rabbi Yaacov [email protected]

Los Angeles Yom IyunRabbi Sandra Katz

In November I was able to attend the yom iyun in Los Angeles, California. I had hoped to attend more during the year, and this experience has intensified my wish to visit the different regions as they hold y’mei iyun in 5773.

The event in Los Angeles included a keynote speaker, our own President-Elect Rabbi Ephraim Karp. Rabbi Karen Fox responded sensitively, and the groups broke out for more personal interaction. After lunch, Rabbi Ed Feinstein gave an engaging keynote presentation and Rabbi Karp responded with his customary sparkle. The committee had designed the event to address the gap between chaplains and community clergy. The feedback I heard indicated that the success of the day included both the content and also the group experience.

I encourage members in other regions to start thinking about the kinds of learning you would like to establish in your areas. I’ll be glad to provide support, NAJC has a few shekels, and your local chaplaincy group will gain strength from a yom iyun.

Dear Cecille,

It is with profound gratitude that I extend our greatest appreciation and thanks to you and the entire National Association of Jewish Chaplains for your immediate and comprehensive response to our urgent request to respond to the devastating impact of Superstorm Sandy in New York and New Jersey.  Within minutes of our request our partner organizations generously responded and within days I had processed over 1,000 responses to individuals willing and interested in supporting the efforts in these two disaster relief operations.

Our goal was to staff 20 highly qualified disaster spiritual care leaders on this operation and I am very pleased to say that we not only met this goal but were able to send in a second wave of chaplains to support the effort following the initial response and staffed over 40 chaplains between both operations.  While the long-term recovery is far from over, our immediate response and engagement of teams from across the country was phenomenal.  Chaplains from across the country who had established their connection with their local Red Cross chapter and who had participated in a Disaster Spiritual Care orientation were on the ground within 24 hours and the last member of our team Rabbi Seth Bernstein was able to complete our response in New York on December 1st.

Among the many who responded, those who had taken a lead role and represented NAJC, were Rabbi Shira Stern in New Jersey and Rabbi Seth Bernstein in New York. The entire team of chaplains did a phenomenal job and were truly a resource to support the ongoing efforts both at their respective headquarters and with those who suffered the loss of a loved one.  Our condolence visits were completed in New Jersey prior to completing the needs in New York and yet as the remaining members of DSC team in New Jersey began to transfer to New York they received a few additional requests for condolence visits for families of individuals who had died in the storm.

The work that each of our leaders did on behalf of the American People through the American Red Cross was a tremendous gift to those with whom they worked and those to whom they comforted.  On behalf of the American Red Cross we are so very grateful to know that leaders such as these, left their own families and in many cases gave up their family gatherings for Thanksgiving to support those greatly impacted by this ongoing disaster.

Currently the work continues with local and long term recovery efforts supported by our NVOAD partners and those who will continue to help the families and communities address their grief and loss as they rebuild together.

Once again, we are deeply grateful,

Tim [email protected]
