Letter from the President Aloha EWI of Honolulu!
Thank you to all those who attended and supported our April Membership Meeting, “Italian Asian Fusion” at member firm, The Plaza Club. We were able to raise $6,900! This will allow us to send additional representatives to LCAM in September. I would like to give a big “MAHALO” to Julie Loo, member firm Sheraton Waikiki, Dulce Sanders, member firm the Plaza Club and Kim Asuncion, member firm Aston-Aqua Hospitality. Without these three ladies, the event would not have been as successful as it was.
A few reminders for the month of May,
1. EWISP Scholarship dinner at Member Firm Sheraton Waikiki on Wednesday, May 9th. Please join us as JaDawn Perez and her committee see the fruits of their labor when EWI of Honolulu awards a total of $20,000 in scholarships to outstanding high school seniors. Don’t forget to invite your Executives as we honor these deserving high school seniors.
The EWI Scholarship Program (EWISP) is an annual, competition based program which awards more than $200,000 (organization-wide) in college scholarship money to qualifying high school seniors. A student is nominated by each school. Only one applicant per school is allowed. A panel of judges (one each from the business, education and civic sectors) selects the winning students based on their scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, good citizenship, financial need, and extra-curricular activities. Each Chapter determines the number and amount of scholarships it will award each year. EWI of Honolulu has been able to award scholarships averaging $8,000-20,000/a year. A chapter winner is submitted to the Corporate-level competition for a chance to win one of multiple scholarships ranging between $1,000 and $5,000. EWI of Honolulu has participated in the EWISP program since its inception in 1974.
2. Straw Ballot for the 2018 – 2019 Board is due to our nominating committee by May 15th. Serving on the board is a very rewarding experience.
3. Nominations for the Na Wahine Leadership Awards are due by May 31, 2018. The Na Wahine Leadership Awards will allow some of our members to attend EWI’s leadership conference, known as LCAM in Raleigh, North Carolina in September 2018. LCAM provides professional development opportunities for our members.
We look forward to an exciting month and hope to see everyone at EWISP.
Mahalo, Michelle Nakahara 2017 – 2018 EWI of Honolulu Chapter President

Where does your money go? Your participation in the golf tournament, our major fund-raising event, will support EWI’s mission of community involvement and allow us to continue to provide generous scholarships to individuals pursuing a higher education degree and to support other philanthropic activities related to literacy. A small portion of the proceeds will also support some of our operational expenses.
EWISP (Executive Women International Scholarship Program) provides scholarship funds to outstanding high school seniors for their pursuit of a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary education institution. Students are judged on their oral and written communication skills, creativity, scholastic records, financial need, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities and honors, citizenship, attitude, and clearly defined career goals. In 2018, EWI of Honolulu will award up to $20,000 in scholarships.
ASIST (Adult Students in Scholastic Transition) Scholarship Program provides financial support to adults facing economic, social, or physical challenges, who are looking to improve their situation through educational opportunities (non-traditional students). The goal of the scholarship is to enable recipients to improve their self-esteem and to have a positive impact on their personal life, employment, and community through the furtherance of their education. In 2018, EWI of Honolulu will award up to $20,000 in scholarships.
Who is EWI? Executive Women International is a professional organization that brings together key individuals from diverse businesses for the purposes of promoting member firms, enhancing personal and professional development, and encouraging community involvement. EWI is unique in that the firm, not the individual, holds the membership.
Since its establishment in 1938 in San Francisco, California, the organization has grown, and today, EWI has more than 1,400 member firms and 1,700 representatives in chapters in major cities across the U.S. and Canada. EWI of Honolulu was established in 1967 and currently has 56 member firms.
