Coffee is one of the world's most popular drinks. If you're like theaverage, 100 million coffee-loving Americans, who down 8-ouncecups of coffee on a daily basis you might want to know what all that‘java’ is doing for you. Have you heard the latest buzz about coffee?

If you can't get through your day without a coffee break or two here's some good news for you: Your small“addiction” might actually be good for you, as always "Everything in moderation” but still! If coffee's your drink ofchoice, let's look at the many ways that it can boost your health. One thing is for sure, what scientists know so far, suggests coffee may help you stay healthy.

Why is coffee good? Over the years some 19,000 studies have analyzed the health impact of coffee—and if you're acoffee lover, you'll be pleased. Studies show:

1. Beneficial antioxidants. Coffee is full of disease-fighting antioxidants. In fact, it contains more antioxidantsthan blueberries and broccoli. Our bodies produce oxygen radicals, which are damaging to DNA. Investigators atCleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute and Harvard University found that drinking coffee – even decaffeinated coffee– can decrease the risk of strokes, because coffee is filled with beneficial antioxidants.

2. Wake-me-up. Caffeine itself may also contribute to coffee's positive effects on brain health. That may bebecause caffeine is an antagonist to adenosine receptors. These receptors normally slow down neural activity whenthe chemical adenosine binds to them, producing a sleepy feeling. But if caffeine binds to the receptors, the activityof neurons speed up.

3. Live longer. A new study found that drinking coffee could lower your risk of death. Researchers from theNational Institutes of Health and the AARP, led by Neal D. Freedman gathered information from 229,119 men and173,141 women who were part of the AARP Diet and Health Study. After 13 years, men who drank two to three cupsof coffee a day had a 10 percent lower chance of dying, compared to men who didn’t drink coffee. Women whodrank the same amount had a 13 percent decreased risk. While this is the largest study to examine the benefits ofcoffee, more research is needed to determine whether coffee can directly help people live longer.

4. Lower risk. With just two cups of coffee a day you can probably cut your risk of colon cancer by 25%,gallstones by nearly 50%.

5. Less pain. The caffeine in 16 ounces of coffee boosts athletic speed and endurance and reduces musclefatigue. Consuming caffeinated coffee an hour before vigorous exercise may help prevent pain while you're workingout, suggests a 2009 study of young men.

6. No Alzheimer’s. Coffee has also been linked to lower risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. A 2009study from Finland and Sweden showed that out of 1,400 people followed for about 20 years, those who reporteddrinking 3-5 cups of coffee daily were 65% less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, compared withnondrinkers or occasional coffee drinkers.

7. The many projects against Type Two Diabetes. Coffee drinkers are less likely to have Type Two diabetes.Studies of nearly 90,000 men and women show heavy coffee consumption, we're talking 6 or more cups a day, slashed men's risk of Type Two diabetes by 54% and women's by 30%

8. Say no cavities. Trigonelline, the compound in coffee that makes it smell so good, has been shown to reducecavities.

9. Good rhythms. In a study of about 130,000 Kaiser Permanente health plan members, people who reporteddrinking 1-3 cups of coffee per day were 20% less likely to be hospitalized for abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)

than nondrinkers, regardless of other risk factors.

10. May protect against skin cancer. Researchers have found the more coffee you drink; the more you may beprotecting yourself against skin cancer. According to a new report published in the Journal Cancer Research, drinking more caffeinated coffee could lower your chances of developing basal cell carcinoma, the most commonform of skin cancer.

11. Your intimate cup of coffee. For most of us, coffee is integral and intimate to our daily lives. It greets us in themorning, makes us happy in the afternoon and helps us wind down into the evening. We gather around it, argueover it, share it and even make peace with it. We create a time and space and sometimes just want a quiet momentwith it and even use it as a date prop to lure people to be with us.

12. Keep social balances. It is remarkable how much meaning and social balances this simple and versatile elixircontains. How can meaningless chat at an espresso bar be so deep–see people cupping their precious brew inhand, bent completely over tippy, square edged tables to get their point across or to be heard through the soft dinof conversation, undeterred by the lack of comfort of the seats. And all of this with the accompanying sounds oftumult and squeaking burrs of the coffee grinder.

Doctors say coffee may helpyou stay healthy but this doesn’t mean people should be drinking it in excess amounts! This is not how it works! Asalways, keep in mind “Moderation is the key to health !"
