Three topics:
• Invasive Species
• Erosion
• Pollution
Invasive Species
The rose-
ringed parakeet
was introduced
to the islands
about 50 years
ago Officials are concerned
about the effects of
birds flying higher into
the mountains and
having an impact on
native plants and
watersheds.
Left unchecked and
uncontrolled, the parakeet
population here could
explode to more than 10,000
birds in the next five years
The birds not only eat up
fruit crops but also
contaminate fruits and
vegetables.
Erosion
A new study by the University of Hawaii shows
the state is on pace to lose 100 feet of beach in
the coming decades and Maui is most at risk
A hundred feet of shoreline erosion around Hawaii
takes us into homes and communities and
highways so this is a coming problem that has
already started
Pollution
Contamination of ground water with organic chemicals,
pollution of coastal waters with sediments and pathogens
from runoff, presence of numerous chemicals in active
and former Department of Defense (DoD) sites are other
challenges
Remediation of
contaminated soil and
ground water appears
to have a major
market share of the
environmental
industry
