Thank you for your support of The Magpies

Welcome, everyone, to Cuthburyfor today's Southern LeagueDivision One South & West

match with Evesham Utd. Please makeour visitors welcome today. Evesham cur-rently sit in 8th spot in the table with 40points from 24 games and that's 10 places& 16 points better off than ourselves. They had a thumping 5-0 win over Bridg-water last time out.The big news from the Club this week wasthe return of Paula Henley to the role ofChairperson. It's a good move for theClub and I am delighted. I'm sure all of uswill give Paula and whoever she brings into help her every support. Welcome back,Paula. If I can just sound a note of cautionthough - please don't expect Paula to workan immediate miracle. These things take abit of time.Tuesday's first half performance againstTotton was unacceptable as SimonBrowne made clear in my post-match in-terview with him. 4-1 down at the intervalwas too big a mountain to climb althoughwe did improve significantly in the secondhalf. Debut boy Mark Ford looked a greatacquisition and his goal was excellent. And I make no apologies for mentioningthe performance of James Stokoe. I'm anunashamed Stokoe fan (the man and the

player) and he always puts in a profession-al performance whether he's playing upfront or in midfield. We are fortunate tohave him at Cuthbury. And while I'm handing out praise, let mesay a word for boss Simon Browne. Hecame to the Club in difficult circumstanc-es but has quietly got on with the job. He's always approachable and has beenworking very hard to stabilise the teamafter a few departures. His assistant,Brendon King, has vast experience and Iknow they'll make a great team. The new Wimborne Town SupportersClub was officially launched on Thursdayat a well attended meeting in the club-house. Well done, Chris Brown & BryanMcCann for getting it off the ground andthe very best of luck to you. This coming Wednesday (January 20th)sees the latest Quiz & Curry night run byour matchday host Michele Govier. It allkicks off at 7.30 and costs £5 for the curryand £1 to enter the quiz. It's always a real-ly good night and a great way for all Mag-pies to help the Club.Enjoy this afternoon's game.

Comment from Paula Hendley on Fans Forum on Club Website - 13 JanI will add more comment later but for now I just want to say I am delighted to be backand would like to thank the outgoing board for embracing the need for change. What they have done for the club in terms of financial support and giving up their timewill never be forgotten.I will respect the traditions of the club and respect the fans of that you have my word. Itis time for change and more will be revealed at a fans forum which I plan to announceon this forum and via other media tomorrow. I am under no illusion that there is a bigtask ahead and I absolutely need the support of the fans to make things happen. The past does need to be left in the past as it is not the direction we are heading. I didapologise to the outgoing board for the way in which I departed a year ago and the apol-ogy was sincere, it is my understanding that my apology has been accepted. So now it istime for action...

Club Statement - 13 January 2016Over the past few months the Board of Wimborne Town FC have been looking for some-one who is prepared to invest in the Club. We are pleased to announce today that agree-ment has been reached with a consortium led by ex-Chairperson Paula Henley to take overthe running of Wimborne Town. Paula has been invited to re-join the Board as Chairper-son with immediate effect and she has accepted. The current Board will be offering to stand down immediately but, for ease of transition tothe new management, will continue to fulfil their roles for as long as Paula wishes. Wefeel that we have taken Wimborne Town as far as we can. We have always said that wewould be prepared, in the best interests of the Club, to stand aside if someone else wantedto take on the challenge of continuing to keep Wimborne Town one of the premier non-league clubs in the area. We give Paula and her consortium our best wishes for taking ourgreat club forward.Paula has said that one of her first actions will be to organise a Supporters Forum to ex-plain her thoughts for the Club in more detail.

Wimborne Town F.C. Independent Supporters ClubAt a well-attended meeting in the Clubhouse on Thursday (Jan 14th) evening, a new Sup-porters Club was formed. A constitution for the club was agreed, and the following mem-bers of the Management Committee were elected :

● Chairman Chris Brown● Vice-Chairman Chris Dale● Treasurer Bryan McCann● Committee Members David Emes, Tony Grant

A Secretary for the club is still needed, so if you’d like to offer your services please con-tact one of the above.Annual membership is £10 for adults, £5 for under 18s and over 65s.

From the DugoutI was hoping to have something posi-

tive to write about following Tuesdaynight’s game for the programme to-

day. Unfortunately the positive news ismore about off field happenings than onfield ones.We have a new set of directors and a newchairperson? (hope I’ve got that rightPaula….!!) to take the club forward andhopefully the future of the club looksbright on that note. However after a 5-2 loss at home , it isclear that Brendon and I still have work todo on the field of play.It seemed like a case of déjà vu on Tues-day versus AFC Totton when we conced-ed early goals against a side wearingyellow (remember Tiverton….?), andagain conceding that number of goalsmeant we had too much of a mountain toclimb in terms of getting anything out ofthe game. Too many players had an offnight and when we were 4-0 down after40 minutes I was thinking of damage limi-tation rather than any sort of comeback.Again though we showed some spirit andscored 2 goals to give the score line a lit-tle bit better look, and it was nice to seenew signing Mark Ford get on the scoresheet, but we have to start games betterthan we have done of late.

There have been lots of changes in theplaying personnel and likely to be moretoday, and I’m well aware that I am ask-ing a lot of some young and inexperiencedlads, but every player that pulls on theWimborne shirt needs to understand that Iexpect them to be on top of their gameand give nothing less than 100% if weare to get 3 points (or even 1) from thesetough games.Today will be no exception, Eveshamhave been doing well in the league of lateand will be a stern test for us.Please get behind the players and enjoythe game today – I want something posi-tive to show Paula and Harry!

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to this afternoon’sEvo-Stik League game againstEvesham. It’s a 250 mile round

trip for the game between our two teams,so we wish our visitors a safe journeyhome this evening.I’ve been asked what it’s like for thoseplayers who’ve stayed at the Cuthbury fol-lowing Steve’s departure. Simon andBrendon have a different approach, so wehave to adapt to that. And then as thebosses build a new team, we have to getused to the lads they’re bringing in. Wecan do that on the training ground and inthe actual matches. We have to get used tohow these lads play, and we have to helpthem to settle in.Simon has given some of the younger ladsin the squad the opportunity to play at thislevel, and they’re getting some great expe-rience. One of the things I’ve noticedthrough the years is that the more experi-enced players are more consistent. When amanager picks a guy with experience hepretty much knows what he’s going to getfrom him, say 8 out of 10 each week. Witha talented young lad you might get 8 outof 10 one week, and then 5 the next. Weall have to work to help those lads im-prove their consistency.Last Saturday we made the long trip toCinderford. Of course I looked at theweather forecast, and I was as surprised asanyone that the game was “on”. But oncethe decision has been taken to play, youhave to deal with what’s there. For thefirst 35 minutes the pitch was playable, and you could pass the ball. But after thatyou couldn’t really play on it. There wasthe likelihood of mis-timed tackles, play-ers sliding into each other, and a real riskof injuries. Their first goal early on was

unfortunate, but after that I thought wedefended well as a unit, and created somegood chances. As well as the rain, itturned quite cold at the start of the secondhalf, and it wasn’t very pleasant comingout of the dressing room after the interval.Although they’re top of the league, thepitch and conditions were a real leveller. With regard to the statistics, appearancesand Ryan’s goal don’t count. My yellowcard, however, does.On Tuesday we were at home to Totton, and in contrast to the game at Cinderford,in the first half we just couldn’t defend asa team. They’ve got some good players, and we gave them too much time and re-spect. You can’t give away 4 goals andthen expect to get something from thegame. I was pleased to score a goal in mynew boots. I’d had a couple of chancesbefore that. I took a long throw from Ry-an, rolled the defender and thumped it into make it 4-1 at the break. In the second half we defended better, cre-ated some chances, and possibly shaded it.Fordy had a good game on his debut. Hetook the ball round the keeper early on,but didn’t see the defender getting back onthe line else he’d have lifted it over him.The goal he did get was well-taken, and hehit it really sweetly from an acute angle. He looks good.I was pleased for Callum to get somegame time. He’s a talented player who hasbeen around the squad all season, and hasa good future ahead of him.Apart, perhaps, from Bashley and Burn-ham, those no easy games in this league.Today will be another tough one.We look forward to your usual support.

Wimborne Town 2 AFC Totton 5 - 12 Jan 2016 - Ken Fergus reports

A very poor first half display saw the Mag-pies three goals behind at the break andleft with too much to do in the second peri-od. Things improved after the break withthe highlight a cracking goal from debutboy Mark Ford. The Magpies lined up in unaccustomedblue & white with Jon Blake in defenceand James Stokoe up front partnered bynew boy Mark Ford with Carl Preston onthe left. Sam Old, who made his first ap-pearance in the abandoned game at Cinder-ford, was in midfield with Louis Kellaway& Ryan Murray. The Totton team con-tained ex-Magpies Ian Oliver & PatrickWilson and they were given a good recep-tion.Wimborne went behind on 7 minutes whenNick Watts was found with a simple ballacross the full-back and scored easily. And they doubled their lead 3 minutes laterwhen the assistant adjudged the ball tohave crossed the line following a corner.Dave Briggs' video suggests the ball wasabout a foot short of the line but the goalstood and was credited to Nathaniel Sher-borne.Totton were well on top at this stage andmy notes say "faster, stronger, bettermovement & better passing". That's agood summary of the first half.Shane Murphy made a good save at thefeet of a Totton forward on 23 minutes, butthe visitors' third goal came just after thehalf hour when the ball broke to an un-marked Michael Gosney who scored easi-ly. Goal no 4 arrived 6 minutes laterwhen, with Shane Murphy off his line,Michael Gosney found the unguarded netfor his second.

The Magpies pulled a goal back just beforehalf-time when a long throw from RyanMurray found James Stokoe on the cornerof the 6 yard box and he swivelled and hita fierce shot past Mowthorpe into the net.Sam Old, who had taken a knock, was re-placed by Morgan Turner at half-time withJames Stokoe dropping back to midfield. And Wimborne should have made it 4-2 on50 minutes when Mark Ford did reallywell to take the ball past Mowthorpe onlyto see a Totton defender get back to clearhis shot. Totton extended their lead on thehour mark with what was a very poor goalfrom the Wimborne perspective. The de-fence were caught sleeping when a free-kick was taken quickly and Nick Wattsnetted with an excellent shot for his secondgoal. The best moment of the night for the Mag-pies came on 68 minutes when Mark Fordscored a cracking goal. He was given theball wide out on the left, beat a player andwhen his first shot was blocked back tohim, he smashed it into the roof of the netfrom a very narrow angle. A great strike.Wimborne were on top for the remainderof the game but could not break down theTotton defence again. And we were in-debted to Shane Murphy for a good savewith his feet in a Totton breakaway on 71minutes. Ant Waters, injured at Cinder-ford on Saturday, came on for Ryan John-son late on.Mark Ford takes the man of the matchhonours for his good play in the secondhalf, but if anyone was in any doubt aboutthe value of Jon Blake & James Stokoe toWimborne before the game, they can't benow. Both had excellent games and themidfield looked weak without either ofthem in the first half.

Wimborne Town 2 AFC Totton 5 - 12 Jan 2016Photos by Simon Carlton - top - Mark Ford & Sam Old; bottom - Shane Murphy catches

The rain in Spain may stay mainly in theplain, but after last Saturday it seems thatthe rain in south-west England stays main-ly on the football pitch. But with Cinder-ford’s last home match 5 weeks before, the hosts were keen to get paying custom-ers through the turnstiles, and the officialsdeemed the surface playable. In the 59 minutes that were played, thehardy spectators were treated to an enter-taining and high-tempo game, played byextremely wet, muddy and cold players.Cinderford scored at the beginning andend of the first half, but the Magpies cameback strongly after the break to reduce thedeficit before the officials decided that theconditions had become too dangerous. In the league, Cinderford had won 9 oftheir last 10, and had kept 15 clean sheetsthis season. This was going to be a chal-lenge for the young Magpies who startedwith Murphy in goal, a back 4 of Randall,Blake, Maybury & Johnson, a mid-field ofMurray, 19-year old Sam Old (making hisdebut), Kellaway and Waters, with Stokoeand Preston up front.

It took the home side just 4 minutes toopen the scoring. A low shot from outsidethe box on the right was deflected pastMurphy by an outstretched Wimborne leg.Despite the conditions, Cinderford playedtheir passing game with midfield and at-tack linking well. But the Wimborne de-fence was resolute whether staying ontheir feet or sliding into tackles andblocks. Captain Blake clearly relished theconditions underfoot and set an exampleto his colleagues. But it wasn’t all one way. Randall, Murrayand Preston combined down the right, andJohnson and Waters down the left. The

intent being to play balls behind the de-fenders who found it difficult to turn.Preston was at the heart of many of thevisitors’ attacks, and was keen to test thekeeper from open play and set pieces. Aswas Murray on 30 minutes after a goodmove involving Stokoe and Old.Cinderford had more of the play but had towait until the 43rd minute for a secondgoal. Following a corner, with Blakedrawn out of position, a cross from theright was firmly headed past Murphy.Earlier Waters had taken a nasty knockwhen he and a defender collided as theyboth slid for a ball, and he was replaced byTurner at half-time.During the break two groundsmen cameout with forks, and appeared to be diggingfor worms for fishibait - it was that wet.In the second half Wimborne took thegame to their hosts. Preston moved out tothe left and was a real handful for his fullback. Johnson’s cultured left foot providedhim with plenty to feed on. However, itwas a towering header from Blake thatsent Preston scurrying down the left on 49minutes. His low cross into the goal areawas met by Murray forcing the keeper tomake an excellent reflex save. Despiteclose attention from a defender, Murrayreacted first and poked the ball home.A repeat performance by Preston nearlyfound the onrushing Turner. Cinderfordwere clearly rattled by Wimborne, but go-ing forward they still looked dangerous. With the ball increasingly getting stuck inthe puddles, the referee called a halt on thehour mark. This was a creditable perform-ance with the senior players (Blake,Stokoe and Preston) leading the way.New date:Tues 16th February, k.o. 19:45

For Against

The Evesham United Football Club dates from just after the second world war when sol-diers returning from action reformed the club and joined the Worcestershire League,However, a club did exist in Evesham prior to the war, the “Town” reaching the F.A.Amateur Cup Final in 1923, losing 1 - 2 a.e.t. to London Caledonians at Crystal Palace. In the club’s first five years in the Worcestershire Combination they were League Cham-pions twice. In 1956 they left to join the Birmingham League and then the WarwickshireLeague in 1959 before returning to the Worcestershire Combination in 1963. They wonthe league title four times (1965/66, 1967/68, 1968/69, and 1991/92).The 1991/92 season saw the club were Midland Combination Premier Division Champi-ons, thus achieving promotion to the Southern League Midlands Division. They alsoreached the quarter final of the F.A. Vase before losing to eventual finalists Guiseley.Following a number poor seasons, former Coventry City defender, Davis Busst, was ap-pointed as manager in November 2003. The 2004/05 campaign saw Evesham take theirplace in the Southern League Division One West. The Robins beat local rivalsBromsgrove Rovers 4-0 in the play-off final and won promotion to the Southern LeaguePremier Division for the first time in their history. After a poor run of results, Busst left in February 2006 and West stepped up to take over.In 2007/08 the club took Blue Square Premier Halifax Town to a replay in the 4th Quali-fying Round of the F.A. Cup before losing 2 – 1 at the Shay, and reached the 3rd Quali-fying Round of the FA Trophy. They won the British Gas Midlands Division.2008/09 saw Evesham back in the Premier Division, finishing 9th. The 1st Round Properof the F.A. Cup was reached for the first time in their history before bowing out toTorquay United at Plainmoor.Initially the club played at Crown Meadow, moving to Common Road in 1968 and open-ing the clubhouse in 1975. After selling their Common Road ground for housing Eve-sham entered into a ground share agreement with Worcester City whilst moves werebeing put in place to build a new stadium on the southern outskirts of Evesham.Season 2011/12 was a disappointment with the club being relegated from the Evo-StikSouthern Premier Division and after spending six years ground sharing at Worcester CityFootball Club the Robins began the 2012/13 season in Division One South & West attheir new Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium. Former West Bromwich Albion and Sun-derland midfielder Shaun Cunnington took over in May 2013. At the end of October hewas replaced by former Bishops Cleeve manager Paul Collicutt. In 2014/15 the Robins lost to Conference South side Bromley in the FA Cup FourthQualifying Round. Then just one defeat in 28 league games earned a second place finishin the South & West Division behind Merthyr Town. However, despite home advantagein the play-offs, Evesham suffered a disappointing defeat against Larkhall Athletic butwith the majority of last season’s squad staying loyal to Manager Paul Collicutt, the Red& Whites will be hoping to go one better in 2015/16.

BOSS Steve Cuss felt Wimborne Towndeserved more from their 1-0 defeat toEvesham United as Magpies failed to scorefor a third league match in a row.Leigh Downing’s strike after half an hoursettled a match played in poor conditions atCuthbury, but manager Cuss was left to ruemissed chances after the interval withGeorge Webb and Jamie Davidson spurn-ing presentable openings before Shaun Bri-an was denied by Evesham custodian BenMcNamara.

Cuss told the Daily Echo: “It turned out tobe a bit of a strange game as the conditionsdictated the play. We had to defend in thefirst half and they had to defend in the sec-ond.

This match was played on the 3G surfaceat Blandford School. The first half was filled with tidy footballbut not a great deal of incident. Both teamshad plenty of possession but were equallyunable to craft a clear scoring chance. In the second half, the first notable chancecame on 45 mins when Smith jinked clearinside the Arsenal area and played an earlycross for Ballance, who was unable to con-nect. This was followed a minute later byan Arsenal attack which saw a high balldrop in the area to Cameron Webb. Hisvolley was half-blocked by Lewis Grayand hit the post, to be finally cleared byCharlie Moore in the Wimborne defence.Just two minutes later, James King was setfree by Ally Sutton for a 1:1 with the Arse-nal GK. King found the space between thekeepers legs but a slight deflection off hisheel saw the ball dribble narrowly wide. In51st minute, Jack Bradley broke down theleft side, cut into the area and curled hisshot towards the far post, only to see theball ricochet off the inside of the post andinto the keeper’s grateful hands.

Wimborne scored in the 63rd minute whena Tommy Scott goalkick was inadvertentlynodded on by an Arsenal midfield for JoshSmith. With the keeper advancing outsidehis area, Josh sent the lob over the keeper’shead only to see the block made with hiselbow. The rebound fell to James Kingwho coolly took advantage of the keeper’sposition from around 30 yards and loftedthe ball into an empty net. Wimborne nowsensed that their opponents were tiring anda sublime ball through from Sutton wasmet on the volley by King, whose volleyjust cleared the bar. King doubled his andWimborne's tally in the 70th minute, strik-ing a sweet shot from the edge of the areafollowing a cleared corner. The final actioncame in the 75th minute when a dink fromByron Yu on the Wimborne left, foundKing unmarked on the edge of the Arsenalarea. One touch took him around the de-fender and a smart finish completed hishat-trick.Arsenal kept going until the last minute butfound a resolute Wimborne defence, su-perbly marshalled by Tommy Scott.
