For a legal relationship tests, AABB requires a photograph or copy of a government issued photo ID for

proper identification of individuals who were collected. In very rare circumstances (i.e. samples

provided by law enforcement agencies, coroner’s samples or prenatal samples) where identification

cannot be verified via a photograph, a signed affidavit from the individual(s) identifying and collecting

the samples needs to be provided.

Prior to leaving for collection

– Gather all materials needed for collection

– Dip fingernail clippers/scissors in alcohol

– Ignite the lighter or match and flame the alcohol off

– Place the clipper/scissors in a sample envelope

1. Remove swab from package and dip in distilled

water, shake to remove excess water

2. Swab between check and gum 20-30 secs.

3. Repeat with remaining swab

4. Place in envelope and seal

5. Remove nail clipper/scissors from envelope

6. Hold envelope under nails and clip 4-5 nails

7. Seal envelope

8. Pull 15 – 20 hairs and place in 3rd envelope

• Avoid touching any areas/items where DNA will be tested

• Avoid sneezing, coughing, excessive talking while collecting DNA

• Avoid putting buccal swabs back in original package or in anything that is plastic or plastic lined

Things to remember

• We always want DNA samples dry

– Moisture promotes bacteria. Bacteria degrades DNA

• If infants are receiving breast milk, wait 2 hrs. prior to performing the collection. Tell your client during initial communication

• To provide the best possible test for your client, find out all parties available for testing, then use our DNA RightTest to select the best test for them

• You can NEVER communicate too much information
