The East Hills School family prides itself on our

Our Second Graders have a full
day of learning...
Reading Workshop:
Guided Reading-Students will learn how to navigate text
at increasing levels of difficulty with the support of their
teachers.
Shared Reading-Students will learn the structure of
varied text as well as how to read with increased levels of
fluency, accuracy and comprehension.
Independent Reading-Students will read text that is
“Just Right.” Our teachers use ongoing assessments to
ensure that the books the students read are appropriate
for maximum learning to occur.
Read Aloud with Accountable Talk-Students will learn
how to think deeply about text. They will learn how to
“Turn and Talk” and “Stop and Jot” to hold on to
information in a shared manner.
Fundations-Students will learn how to use the foundations
of phonics and spelling through multi-sensory teaching techniques provided by their classroom teachers.
Reading Logs-Students will use these logs to help monitor
their independent reading both in school and at home.
Together, students and teachers learn about individual
reading habits as well as growth in pacing, stamina and
exposure to varied text.
Writing Workshop:
Writing Process-Students will learn how to write across
varied genre incorporating the steps of the writing process from gathering ideas to revising and publishing.
Mathematics:
Go Math-Students will learn how to develop a deeper
understanding of the key mathematical concepts as
outlined in the CCSS through teacher facilitated tiered
instruction and the use of manipulatives.
