p EVERYTHING GOLDEN? Even with an excellent education, young South Africans face great uncertainty in the future.

The youth of South Africa played a pivotal role in the emancipation of this country

and it is fitting that South Africa recognizes their contribution to the struggle on Youth Day. Despite their role in the struggle against apartheid, the 'struggle' is far from over. For many of South Africa's youth, the sacrifices of past genera-tions have had very little material impact to address inequality, im-prove social conditions, or create more employment opportunities.

The country's education system—despite significant financial support

from national government—has failed our youth. Too many chil-dren do not reach high school, let alone matriculate.

The scenes at our universities in the past two years are symptomatic

of the inequalities of the past not having being adequately addressed. Unemployment among the youth is at a worryingly high level, and some reports actually show that there are less skilled jobs available to young people now, than at the time of South Africa's transition to democracy.

So why excatly are we celebrating?

We must provide a better future for our children. We must be part of building a South Africa in which we have heroes and role models; a South Africa where a value system

exists; a South Africa where wom-en and children are celebrated; a South Africa where the rule of law is applied and applied equally to all its citizens; a South Africa where hard work is treasured and reward-ed, not who you know and court; a South Africa where the Constitu-tion is the bedrock of our democ-racy; a South Africa where there exists a trust relationship between those elected to public office and those who elected them; a South Africa where the sacrifices of the past have resulted in a new dawn, a dawn that is filled with promise and hope for our children.

I would like our children to feel proud of this country and to want to be part of its future success and development. I do not want to hear talk of young people wanting to leave South Africa as the percep-tion grows that opportunity awaits them elsewhere.

It is therefore no longer enough to celebrate the victories of the past. Our celebration must be accom-panied by the promise of a better future. Each one of us has a duty to create this new dawn. Only then can we truly celebrate Youth Day with integrity. Together as parents, educators, and concerned citizens,

let us plant seeds of hope in our children by showing them all that is good in our country. Let us not just speak out against injustice, inefficiency, apathy, mediocrity and corruption, but actively work to build a just, transparent, and empowering society through our jobs, faith communities, and chari-table endeavours. Let us hand on a better world to our children.
