Pressure from the EU.

There's no way around this EU regulation: As of November 1, 2014, all newly registered M1 class vehicles in Europe must be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system.

Clear-cut rulesEU regulation ECE 661/2009 specifies precisely what safety information the system must display:

• It must report a sudden loss of pressure of more than 20% within a period of ten minutes.

• It must warn the driver within 60 minutes if there is a gradual loss of pressure.

• It must function reliably at speeds of 40 km/h and more, up to the top design speed of the vehicle.

Continuous monitoring of the tire pressure using sensors is an effective, innovative way of considerably improving a vehicle's safety, economic efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Automotive manufacturers are free to decide what kind of system to use in their vehicles. They can choose between two different technologies.

Indirect systemsThe indirect system evaluates signals from the wheel speed sensors. A software component compares the speeds of the wheels. The speed of a wheel will increase if the tire has lower pressure. If the system detects a difference in wheel speeds and this is not attributable to the driving situation, a warning lamp on the instrument cluster will light up.

Direct systemsIn a direct system, each wheel is equipped with a sensor that measures the tire pressure and tempera-ture directly. The control unit analyzes the values, which are transmitted to it via a wireless connection, and displays a warning on the instrument cluster if the pressure is too low.

Optimum tire pressure – the advantages

• Environmentally responsible: cuts fuel consumption and reduces CO2 emissions

• Safe: optimum braking distance and improved handling, in particular in curves

• Economical: saves fuel and extends the lifetime of tires

The advantages of direct systems

• Direct systems are fast and deliver absolute data.

• Direct systems can display the pressure and temperature of each tire individually, even when the vehicle is stationary.

• If the tire pressure changes – for example when there is a heavier load or when a tire is changed – direct systems do not have to be recalibrated.

We can supply you with everything you need for servicing tires equipped with tire pressure monitoring sensors. Our portfolio includes not only the sensors but also the corresponding service kits, consisting of mounting nut, valve insert, seal, seal washer and valve cap. For service activities at the tire, the replacement parts portfolio is rounded off by valve stems for the sensor designs TG1C (Clamp-in) and TG1D (Snap-in).

Tips and tricks

Whereas sensor units only have to be replaced if they are damaged or no longer work, service parts should be checked and replaced whenever a tire is changed.

The torque wrench set – for the reliable fitting of tire pressure sensors.

Using the torque wrench set, valve-based tire pressure monitoring sensors can always be fitted and dismounted reliably. Consequently, it is a simple task to observe the manufacturer-specific torques and ensure that neither the union nut nor the valve insert is overtightened.

Tips and tricks

• The sensor, which is fixed to the valve, can easily be damaged if it is not handled correctly. Tip: Only use installation equipment and other aids that have also been certified for use for the fitting of UHP and run-flat tires.

• After installing new sensors, it is necessary to teach them to the system. Tip: During this operation, observe the relevant automotive manufacturer's instructions.

• On every wheel or tire change, the service parts should also be inspected and replaced. Tip: Only use the parts present in the corresponding service kit because conventional valve inserts or even steel valve caps may quickly result in an electrochemical reaction between the components.

• It is also necessary to take care when replacing valve-based sensors. Tip: Observe the tightening torques specified by the manufacturer to avoid insufficient or excessive tightening of the sensors.

The VDO REDI-Sensor: insert, glue, finished.

One sensor for (almost) every need. When it comes to tire pressure monitoring systems, the VDO REDI-Sensor considerably simplifies storage and logistics. Whereas virtually every vehicle already equipped with this system requires a specific tire pressure monitoring sensor, workshops can now equip many of the vehicles on the European market with only five different variants.

Well protected and easily fitted.

The sensor has a completely new shape: It is no bigger than a 50-cent coin and is housed in a rubber case that is glued to the inner surface of the tire – this considerably simplifies fitting and protects against mechanical damage. In addition, the VDO REDI-Sensor can be used in combination with any wheel rim.

When changing tires, all you have to do is take it out, put it in a new case and glue it into place again.

Remember to clean the inner tire surface before gluing the VDO REDI-Sensor in place.

Quick teaching instead of laborious programming. The VDO REDI-Sensor concept has a number of crucial advantages compared to programmable solutions: Each VDO REDI-Sensor is shipped with multiple protocols and requires no additional programming by workshop personnel. It simply has to be affixed inside the tire and, like all other solutions, taught to work with the vehicle.

Suitable for practically all brands of tire.

VDO REDI-Sensors can be fitted in commercially available standard tires* for passenger cars and small vans. Precondition: The gluing area of 40 mm diameter required to affix the sensor must be free of ventilation ribs.

This requirement is met by all Continental Group tire brands produced as of April 2014 as well as by most of the tires from other leading manufacturers. Good to know: If the rubber case is fitted in an appropriate and professional manner in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, the tire manufacturer's general liability for quality defects will not be invalidated. The REDI-Sensor push-on tool ensures that the installation operation is performed correctly and reliably. The use of this tool is mandatory when fitting the REDI-Sensors.

VDO TPMS Pro – the compact, versatile service unit.

Powerful, fast and reliable.

The practical VDO TPMS Pro simplifies the inspection of tire pressure monitoring systems from a large number of manufacturers. Thanks to its state-of-the-art scan technology, the sensor values can be read and checked quickly and any necessary adjustments can be made.

Not only can you display the tire pressure control sensors; you can also call up the battery status, the temperature, the tire pressure, the sensor ID and other information. The data is transferred quickly and easily via USB or SD card. In addition, using the VDO TPMS Pro, it is also possible to program universal sensors from a variety of manufacturers.

Depending on the vehicle model, the newly pro-grammed tire pressure monitoring sensors are im-ported into VDO TPMS Pro via an OBD-II connection and taught. Errors in the sensor are read out and deleted. A high-resolution, easy-to-navigate 4.3-inch color display ensures fast, efficient work.

The integrated database provides you with important information about the TPM sensors, including the replacement parts numbers and torques.
