Auckland College Newsletter June 2018 Dear Parents/Carers With the start of the Sumer Term, we welcomed examination season. Our Year 11 pupils started their GCSE examinations which will finish on 12th June. Meanwhile our Year 2 pupils completed their end of Key Stage 1 SATs and finally our Year 6 pupils sat their end of Key Stage 2 SATs. We raised a very important topic and invited the NSPCC to deliver assemblies for their ‘Speak out. Stay Safe.’ campaign. They then returned to deliver workshops to our Year 5 and 6 pupils. We appreciate that the service provided by the NSPCC is exceptional and therefore we held a sponsored maths challenge in each class to help raise funds. I am delighted to say that after all sponsorship money was returned, we raised a grand total of £680.32. This amount equates to 170 ChildLine telephone calls being answered. I am very proud of our school community’s willingness and enthusiasm to help those around us. This was demonstrated again by the contributions made during our ‘Crazy Glasses’ Day. We raised a total of £155 for the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust. Whilst I am talking about fundraising, I must mention the great support the PTA has received for the events held during this half term. We had two fantastic film nights and a cake sale. This is all in preparation for the Summer Fair. They held their very first one last year, and those who were lucky enough to attend will agree that it was a fantastic experience for the whole family. I particularly enjoyed my role for ‘Soak the Teacher’ and, without a doubt, I will be there again this year! I can promise it is set to be another fun-filled day for all the family. It will be held from 1pm—3pm on Saturday 23rd June in our school grounds with games, stalls and a barbeque. From Soak the Teacher and tombola, to glitter tattoos, a bouncy slide and lucky dip, there’s plenty for children, while parents can pick up pre-loved uniform items, a tasty treat from the BBQ or tuck shop, raffle tickets and gifts from the stalls. Tickets cost 50p per person and are available from Breakfast Club next week. All tickets bought in advance will be entered into a draw. Tickets will also be available on the gate. All donations of good-quality uniform which no longer fits, or you no longer need, will be greatly appreciated for our fair. Any donations can be dropped off in Breakfast Club each morning. This term, the PTA have purchased 2 sets of large foam roleplay blocks for the Early Years Department and also made a contribution to the travel costs for the Year 5/6 residential trip to Colomendy. Dear Parents/Carers

With the start of the Sumer Term, we welcomed examination season.

From Soak the Teacher and tombola, to

glitter tattoos, a bouncy slide and lucky dip, there’s plenty for children, while parents can pick up pre-loved uniform items, a tasty treat from the BBQ or tuck shop, raffle tickets and gifts from the stalls.

We are extremely grateful for the continued support from the PTA for the development of our school.

Kind regards,

Miss Boyd

What has Pre-Prep 2 been up to? - Mrs Collins

Pre Prep 2 have worked very hard this half term, we have had lots of fun, learning new things, in all of our lessons.

In Literacy, the children have been learning more new Phase 2 sounds and meeting the characters in Letterland.

The children have been working on their pencil control and letter / number formation, using not only pencil, but playdough and sand.

In Mathematics, the children

have been practicing their counting skills. They have been counting two groups of objects and finding out what the total amount would be.

Pre Prep 2 also discussed the Royal Wedding and designed wedding balloons for the celebration.

The children have also had the opportunity to explore colour, sounds and textures. They have enjoyed taking part in all activities and using

our sensory circles to describe texture s and using our sound blocks to create music.

What has Pre-Prep 1 been up to? - Miss Lloyd

Pre-Prep 1 pupils have made the transition to school with ease and enjoyed becoming part of a bigger community. They have taken this process in their stride and I am so proud of their hard work during this time.

Miss Terriann and Miss Helen and I are particularly enjoying helping and then seeing the children develop and flourish in their learning environment. Playtimes are a popular time of the day and it

has been great to see friendships develop with pupils in Pre-Prep 2 also.

During lessons we have enjoyed learning about Spring and all the animals we see at this time.

We have really enjoyed Spanish and PE lessons and we look forward to these each week.

We have learnt lots of new songs and we’re starting to get really good at them.

We have talked a lot about ourselves and our families and in particular, what makes us special.

It’s been a busy first half term for us, but we are ready for a really fun final term of the year!

What has Pre-Prep 3 been up to? - Miss Smith

This half term Pre Prep 3 have been learning about time and sequencing. The children have measured short periods of time in a variety of ways and have begun to look at the hourly “o’clock” times.

In Phonics we have been reinforcing Phase 2 sounds and introducing Phase 3 sounds and tricky words. The children have made great progress in this area and should be very proud of all the hard work they have done.

Our Spring topic prompted some lovely findings on our

nature walks and children really enjoyed watching the caterpillars grow and change into butterflies. It was wonderful to see the care and concern that all children displayed when one of the butterflies was hurt and they worked as a team to successfully nurse it better.

We have been learning about healthy eating and the importance of eating a healthy diet and keeping fit. The children made fruit kebabs and monitored the effect of physical activity on their bodies in PE.

We also had a visit from the Magic Smiley Teeth Show and had lots of fun learning how to look after our teeth.

This term reception has been learning all about growth and the life cycle of plants and animals. They have really enjoyed caring for their own sunflower seed, providing it with soil, water and sunlight daily. They have also been really excited to watch our little caterpillars grow into butterflies; they were so pleased to see them making a chrysalis, then once they hatched, they watched them making their wings stronger every day. We had a wonderful day releasing them to fly free!

In literacy we have also looked at ‘facts’ and the children were really interested in wolves; we found several facts about them, so much so, that they were inspired to write their own wolf stories including all of their facts to make it more interesting. In numeracy we have continued to perfect our addition skills; we have been looking into halving and doubling numbers and the children are really secure of this skill, which will ready them for year 1. The children are becoming so much more independent and all

children know how to make healthy food choices. They know how to dress and undress themselves during the warm weather too! We also had a visit from the dentist, who encouraged children to understand the importance of brushing our teeth twice a day! During our final term we will continue to have fun learning and focus on securing all understanding, so that children can enter into year 1 with confidence and excitement to show their new teacher all of their skills!

Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the Summer term and have produced some wonderful work across the curriculum.

As we are approaching the end of Year 1 we have begun to incorporate Year 2 targets across the curriculum, to prepare pupils for the transition into Year 2. We have started working on division and multiplication within Numeracy, along with

exploring the properties of 3D shapes. Next half term, in Literacy, Year 1 will be focusing on contemporary fiction and the features of traditional poetry.

Within History, the children have been learning about the Victorians, with a specific focus on sea side holidays. In Science, the children have really enjoyed learning about seasonal changes and will be progressing on to plants, next

half term.

Both myself and Miss Kelly look forward to the challenges of the next half term as we prepare pupils in reaching their end of year targets and equip them with the tools needed for the next academic year.

In numeracy, Year 3 has been working extremely hard to secure their understanding in the topic area of measurement. The class has used their understanding of multiplication and addition to investigate the perimeter and area of a variety of everyday objects. The class has secured their understanding even further by using inverse operations to check their working, a skill which enables

them to identify any successes and potential areas for improvement in their everyday numeracy work. In the foundation subject of history, year 3 has been exploring the Anglo-Saxons and Scots, using a range of sources to investigate religious beliefs, settlements, artefacts and culture. The class has really enjoyed creating their own fact files

on Anglo-Saxon artefacts and religious beliefs and have relished in the opportunity to link key Anglo-Saxon terms to vocabulary in today's English language.

The first part of our Summer term was extremely busy. The children had lots of preparation and revision in the build up to their SATs. In Literacy we spent a large portion of time developing comprehension and grammar skills. While we have been working on these areas throughout the year it was important that the children became familiar with the terminology and question types consistent with the formal SATs papers. In Numeracy we

looked at time, shape, measuring and fractions in greater detail. We measured length and compared different units of measure. We did several practice papers across both subjects. It was important that the children felt confident and calm during a potentially stressful time, therefore we focused significantly on breathing exercises and relaxation techniques during our mindfulness sessions.

In Science lessons we looked at different materials and their properties.

In Art we did lots of practical activities which consisted of making various toys and illusions out of paper.

As a reward for all their efforts during the half term we took the children for lunch and ice cream in Sefton Park, followed by a fun game of Rounders.

Within our literacy this half term we have focused on information texts, this allowed us the chance to visit the Liverpool world Museum and have a great day out gathering information for our classwork. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Within our Numeracy we have focused on shape, space and measure, looking at things like angles, area and symmetry. We even went on a symmetry hunt around our school! We found lots of

symmetrical shapes!

Our topic this year has carried on from last term and we have continued to look at the life of the Tudors. We have looked at

many aspects of this period. The Tudors has also carried into our Art lessons, allowing us to explore portraits and Tudor inspired art.

Year 4 really enjoyed helping to raise money for the Childhood eye cancer trust by wearing our crazy glasses. There was a great effort made by all!

fingers crossed for good weather this year!

Many of our students are also looking forward to the residential trip to Colomendy towards the end of June.

As we prepare now for the final half term of the year, we will focus a lot on the transition to senior school.

Year 6 has worked incredibly hard this term and took their End of Key Stage 2 SATs. They took the 4 days of tests in their stride and thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations at the end with a Subway lunch.

In PE, the students have been preparing for Sports Day and we have all got our

news reports and were introduced to balanced argument writing. Also, in the final weeks of the half term, the children have also been looking at war poetry, which links to our current topic. The class has been able to discuss independently and together about the figurative language used and have incorporated those writing techniques into their own war poem.

In our topic lessons, Year 5 has been learning about World War 2 and have been inspired by this to make dioramas in DT/Art. The children have been so focused and enthused during these weeks and created some wonderful pieces of art and really captured times around World War 2.

This half term, Year 5 has been working hard in their lessons and with their homework. Over the past weeks in Numeracy, we have covered 3D shapes, nets, translation and reflection. The class amazed me throughout the lessons and really wanted to challenge themselves on these subjects. In Literacy, Year 5 revisited

This term Year 7/8 has learned about how magnets interact with the world around us. They learned how we use magnets in our everyday lives and applied Fleming’s left hand rule. Furthermore, Year 7/8 has also built circuits and used them to describe the different rules for series and parallel circuits.

Year 9/10 has so far this term been studying about how our nervous system works, allowing us to respond to dangerous changes in our environment. Additionally, we

have looked at how hormones, the chemical messengers of the body, interact and help us respond to different stimuli. From drawing reflex arcs to explaining how diabetes occurs, Year 9/10 now have a thorough understanding of how our bodies react to stimuli!

In geography Year 7/8 has looked at how cities grow, develop, and decline due to urbanisation. The students have described different

types of urbanisation as well as identifying megacities and world cities!

This term the Year 9/10 class has conducted Geography fieldwork in Ormskirk and Liverpool. We have looked at how flooding impacts our local area as well as how employment has changed in the city centre. Well done for your hard work Year 9/10!

explored explicit and implicit meaning. Meanwhile Year 11 has been practising examination papers in preparation of their GCSE examinations.

Year 7 and 8 has worked so hard this term on daily routines and were happy with their assessment results.

Meanwhile, the GCSE class have been learning to talk about social media in Spanish, something all teenagers can relate to very easily!

Our Prep classes have been working hard in Spanish this term, as well as focusing on our main topics, each class has been working hard on their numbers and key questions and answers. Each class has been trying to do this in 3 to 4 minutes and beat the timer!

Year 6 are busy completing the final assessments ready
