PASTOR Dear Friends: This Sunday, February 11, 2018 is World Marriage Day which honors husband and wife as head of the family, the
basic unit of society. This day salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. Today, take the
time to tell your spouse how much your marriage means to you. The theme for World Marriage Day has been permanent-
ly adopted as “Love One Another”. This phrase is the commandment given us by Jesus in chapter 14 of St. John’s Gospel. It
speaks to us in a simple but challenging way of how God wishes us to live. Loving one another is a daily decision – simple,
but challenging. The Sacrament of Matrimony is an empowerment to husband and wife to be messengers of divine truth
and love. A healthy marriage relationship leads to a healthy family. A healthy family leads to a healthy parish. A healthy
parish leads to a healthy society. Healthy love relationships between husband and wife is crucially important because every-
thing else depends on it. In sharing their love in the world as a couple, husbands and wives contribute greatly to a world
desperately in need of true love. We salute, honor and ask God’s blessings upon all married couples in St. Patrick's and St.
Anne’s; and in a special way upon those who have lost their spouse: may the peace of Christ dwell in your hearts and
homes. The following is part of a prayer by Larry & Mary Sue Eck & Fr. Tom Burr of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter,
the prayer is entitled The Hands of Matrimony: “These are the hands of the Sacrament of Matrimony. These four hands are
your armor and shield against the evils of the world. These four hands are God’s plan for renewing His Church. These are the hands
that will reach out to the teenager, bring hope to the lonely, teach the engaged the wonders of married love, heal the abused and
hurting children of the world. These hands are the hope of a troubled humanity. These are the hands that will change the world.” HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO ONE AND TO ALL!! Our Candidates and Catechumens (RCIA) will celebrate the Rite of election with Bishop Pates on Saturday
February 17th, at Corpus Christi Parish in Council Bluffs. In this Rite, the Church gives formal approval and acceptance to the candidates’ and catechumens’ readiness for the sacraments of initiation and their willingness to receive them. Thus the
Church makes its “election,” that is, the choice and admission of those who have the dispositions that make them fit to
take part in the sacrament of initiation. It is called election because the acceptance made by the Church is founded on the
election by God, in whose name the Church acts. This step is also called the enrollment of names because as a pledge of
fidelity, those so chosen, inscribe their names in the book that lists those who have been chosen for initiation. From this
day on, they are called “the elect”. After the election, we as a community of faith and worship are asked to surround the
elect with prayer, so that the entire Church will accompany and lead them to encounter Christ. To them all we say, “May
you always walk in the peace of Christ.”
Ash Wednesday is February 14th, 2018 when we begin our Lenten Season. The Lenten/Easter schedule has been mailed; make every effort to participate in the various events and activities. Easter is the very foundation of our Catholic
Faith and we do well to prepare for it with care and intention. The Lord’s death and resurrection is the very heart of our
hope of someday being with our God in heaven. But for Easter to have the impact it should, good preparation on our part
is essential. Here are some recommendations: (1) Attending daily Mass, continuing prayer, fasting, and penance during
Lent. (2) A sincere Confession so that God’s love and mercy can be experienced by each of us. (3) Participation in the
Holy Week – Triduum services to be held in our parishes. I invite you to continue spiritually growing this Lenten and
Easter Season by coming to Confession, attending Mass, and receiving Holy Communion. Then you will truly and joyfully
experience the gift of peace which Jesus offers you, a peace which is beyond comparison, a peace which the world cannot
give. Lent is springtime in the Churches, a time for rebirth and renewal. Lent is a time for drifters and wanderers to come
home. I take it we all fit into that class, one way or another. “Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping,
and mourning” (Joel 2:12). It is a cry from God’s own heart, inviting us to turn around, get back on track; it is a cry from the
heart of God to our own hearts. St. Augustine called fasting and almsgiving the “two wings” enabling prayer to fly into
heaven. According to our tradition, fasting must always be accompanied by prayer (the lifting up of mind and heart to God)
and almsgiving (the sharing of charity).
