Thank you for your atten-tion to this matter.
Congratulations to Ms. Carney’s homeroom class for collecting 179 coats . They earned themselves a Raising Cane’s Party. Way to go! Thank you to all students who do-nated coats to benefit the less for-tunate.
Congratulations!
The Fourth Grade Quest students at Bayou View Elementary wanted to make a positive difference in their community.
After watching a TV broadcast on WLOX about a park that had been unsafe and empty, Mrs. Jackson discussed this broad-
cast with her students. After hearing the story and discussing the impact of a neighborhood park, the students were eager
to help this community. They discussed fund raisers and ideas to jump start this project to raise money for playground
equipment. After conducting research, students invited community members to the classroom to learn history about the
park. The park originated as the site for a school for African Americans and was later transformed into a park. The students
began by drawing designs and park layouts. They researched playground equipment prices and durability standards. As
community members visited the classrooms, student drawings were displayed and presented. During one visit, the class
discovered that money had already been allocated for the park by the city. The Civic Club had originated this effort, and
the students started the ball rolling. The students wanted to know why park equipment was not in the park when money
had been allocated. This was the question that the kids wanted the city council to answer. The class wrote a letter and
invited Councilman Ricky Dombrowski to discuss the situation. Mr. Dombrowski informed the class about the lasted updat-
ed news concerning the park and the funding. The students presented their park designs to Mr. Dombrowski during his
visit. The class also informed Mr. Dombrowski about our classroom plans for Christmas in the Park on December 15. Dur-
ing the study, some students would ride to the park with their parents checking the development of the park. First, the
trees were removed to install the equipment. Next, sand was delivered on the site. At this point, some playground equip-
ment and a park bench had been installed in the park. There are still plans for a pavilion and other work to be completed
on the site. Although the park is not finished, the students are using Christmas in the Park to celebrate the start of happi-
ness for the children in this com-
munity.
