NEWSLETTER - T4 W3 October 2016

How schools can improve literacy and numeracy performance and why it (still) matters was recently published by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE).

The publication is of interest when reflecting on the NSW Premier’s 12 Priorities released in 2015 which include a target to increase the proportion of all students in the top two bands in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) by 8 per cent by 2019. These targets reflect the importance of literacy and numeracy skills as the foundations for success in schooling.

To achieve the Premier’s NAPLAN target at Ashfield Public School we must ensure the effectiveness of our school processes including the way we identify and accelerate students who have the capacity to achieve in the top two NAPLAN bands. This is about sustaining an ongoing cycle of assessment, programs,

interventions and initiatives that will improve the specific literacy and numeracy skills required for identified students to achieve in the top two bands.

The CESE publication puts forward the importance of setting whole school goals to drive high impact, quality teaching that results in the improvement of student literacy and numeracy performance. According to the publication, these whole school goals must focus on teaching and learning, they must be shared, they must embody high expectations and they must focus on a small number of core priorities.

Whole school goals for both teaching and learning can be found in the Ashfield Public School Plan. Each goal has a correlating improvement measure against which the success of the goals can be demonstrated.

One particular goal of the school plan, measureable achievement, fits very well with the Premier’s target of an 8% increase for students in the top two NAPLAN bands. This goal requires teachers to analyse and have deep knowledge of students’ NAPLAN and other assessment results. It requires teachers, in a very timely manner, to use assessment data to explicitly show what a student knows and what a student has yet to learn. It requires teachers to design learning not as a series of discrete events but rather as a trajectory to develop skills and understandings that build upon each other. It also requires teachers to discuss with students and parents individual NAPLAN and other assessment results with a focus on where to next.

Ashfield Public School is very serious about improving the literacy and numeracy of every child and achieving the Premier’s NAPLAN target by 2019. Using our school plan we will continue to improve the way we identify the learning needs of students and implement a range of engaging and effective programs, interventions and initiatives.

Kindergarten had a fantastic time at Campbell Park when they ran in their very first athletics carnival. The day was windy and they ran like the wind to receive a ribbon to take home and put on the fridge. After the races the whole school participated in fun activities. We ran our very own Olympics where we threw bean bags, vortex’s and jumped up a storm.

This term Kindergarten is investigating the movement of toys. This unit of work is going to culminate in each child designing and making their own moving toy. The children are all researching toys and are preparing toys on their favourite toys, toys their parents and grandparents played with as well as toys from around the world. The teachers are already impressed with the mature and thorough presentations they have seen.

We are all looking forward to going swimming in Week 8 and the end of year picnic and Carrs Park.

Well done on all the books you have been reading at home. Keep up the good work, it is making such a difference.

Welcome back to our very busy fourth term. It’s going to go quickly with all the action packed activities and learning we are planning to do.

It is an exciting time for teachers too as we get to reflect on all the children and their progress and write a report on this to share with you.

The children enjoy the fourth term because they also reflect on their own learning and can see how far they have come. They will now see the value of learning and the hard work that has prepared them for the next part of their journey in education.

Many school medals will be awarded this term because Stage One students have reached the target of five large school awards reinforcing Ashfield Public School’s Positive Behaviour for Learning Wellbeing Goals. Well done to those who have already earned their first medal.

Swimming and water safety is so important especially now the warmer weather is here. Ashfield Public school students learn how to survive, swim and enjoy the water in many circumstances. That is why the school swimming program lessons are so important.

Hope all the children are coming home and retelling their favourite fairy tales. They are learning so much about these famous stories, their authors, origins and how these stories have evolved, portray messages and entertain us.

Keep up the happy learning, reading, thinking, being active and enjoy all that Ashfield Public School has to offer.

4/5AStage 2 are have entered this term keen and ready to learn. 4/5A have done an amazing job of welcoming our new students and making them feel welcome in our class. It has been exciting as we looked at world maps to see where we all come from. We are really enjoying learning about geographic aspects of Australia and learnt some really interesting facts about the similarities and differences between Australian states and Territories already.

Stage 2On Tuesday 18th October 2016, Stage 2 visited the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour to celebrate the opening of the venue. The Talent Development Project (TDP) aims to cultivate and support young talented students from the Department of Education. Stage 2 of Ashfield Public School were lucky to be invited.

The TDP graduates and international musical artists performed live. Stage 2 had the opportunity to be exposed to different genres of music including jazz, rock and opera. The students were excited to see Delta Goodrem perform her new debut album song. It was great to see students’ engagement and appreciation of the music and the venue. We look forward to seeing our inspired students develop their musical talent.

TheNews RoomA Strength Based on Practice

A strength-based approach is a positive psychology perspective that emphasises the strengths, capabilities and resources of the child.

Some strength based principles:

1. An absolute belief that every student has potential. It is their unique strengths and capabilities that will determine their evolving story as well as define who they are - not what they’re not (not, I will believe when I see – rather, I believe and I will see).

2. What we focus on becomes a student’s reality. Focus on what a student can do as the starting point, not what they cannot. See challenges as opportunities to explore, not something to avoid. Start with small success and build upon them to create a foundation of hope and optimism.

3. Be mindful that the language we use creates a reality – both for the educators and the students (e.g., Saying – “It looks like you tried doing this exercise another way let’s see how it worked for you.”; As opposed to saying – “Did you not hear what I told the other students?”).

4. Belief that change is inevitable and all students can and will be successful. All students have the urge to succeed, to explore the world around them and to contribute to others and their communities.

5. Positive change occurs in the context of authentic relationships. Students need to know that school staff care and will be there unconditionally for them.

6. What a student thinks about themselves and their reality is primary – it is their story. Therefore, educators must value and start the change process with what is important to the student. It’s the student’s story that’s important, not the expert.

7. Students have more confidence and comfort to journey to the future (or to the unknown) when they are invited to start with what they already know.

8. Capacity building is a process and a goal. Effective and sustainable change is a dynamic process one supports in cumulative ways that leads the child to write the next chapters of their story in meaningful ways.

9. It is important to value differences and the essential need to collaborate. Transformational change is a collaborative, inclusive and participatory process – “It takes a village to raise a child”.

Congratulations to all of the students who attended the Harvest Festival. Even though not all of the students were there, we were still able to perform all of the stage songs and choir songs. Junior choir in particular had a small number in attendance, but they all performed beautifully. In Stage 3 we have been reviewing music symbols including notes and rests and clefs for an assessment in week 3. Stage 2 will complete this at a later stage. Early Stage 1 has already completed an observational assessment and Stage 1 will complete a similar assessment. In all stages we have been rehearsing a song called ‘Let It Play’ written by Australian students for the Same Day Same Song event which happens on Thursday at 12:30 in the Hall in week 4.

Stage 3 choir students have the Celebration Sing Out performance coming up in 2 weeks. I hope parents and carers are able to attend on October 30th at Town Hall. Tickets can be bought online via tickets4me.com, but will also be available for purchase at Town Hall on the night of the performance. Hoping to see you there.

Library News

Students in Stages 2 and 3 are studying geography this term. Geography as a subject in the primary curriculum is concerned with people and places and the interaction between the two. Geography has a vital role to play in helping students understand the world in which they are growing up, and in equipping them with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be active, informed and responsible citizens.

The advantage of using picture, story and fiction books in geography teaching and learning are diverse. Well-chosen books engage students’ interest, excite curiosity, provoke questions, pose dilemmas and spark imaginative responses. Many stories are set in locations beyond students’ own experiences, so expand their horizons,

transporting them to new, unfamiliar and sometimes unimagined places and environments. The themes in children’s literature often explore important aspects of physical, human or environmental geography, such as weather, journeys or the impact of development. We are very excited about our topics- China in Stage 2 and Indonesia in Stage 3.

Book Week- so much fun

There are many new fiction books in the Library so there are plenty of opportunities for students to borrow and read. Lunch time Library and homework club is providing a chance for students to use technology to assist their classroom learning programs.

Aboriginal Language

When the white people arrived in Australia, there were over 250 Aboriginal languages spoken. Traditional Australians did not speak English.

One way to communicate with one another was through a Pidgin. Some Australians born after the arrival of the white people grew up with Pidgin as their first language.

This meant that the Pidgin became a new language called a Creole.

In regions where Aboriginal language was forbidden or there was increased contact with the white settlers, the Creole developed into Aboriginal English.

Example of Aboriginal English:

• big fella business = important business• we workin’ = we are working• aunty and uncle = address for older people

After Tihar or Swanti (Newar) or Lakshmi Puja (Maithili) is a five-day-long festival celebrated in Nepal and the Indian states of Assam, Sikkim and Darjeeling in West Bengal that comes soon after Dashain. It is celebrated by all Nepalese (Nepali people) and Indian Gorkhas. Among the Newars and Madhesis it is popularly known as Swanti (Newar) and Lakshmi Puja (Maithili) respectively. The festival is celebrated from Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna to Kartik Shukla Dwitiya every year. Tihar in general signifies the festival of lights, where diyas are lit inside and outside the houses to make it illuminate at night. The five-day festival is considered to be of great importance as it shows reverence to not just the humans and the Gods, but also to the animals like crows, cows and dogs who maintain an intense relationship with humans. People make patterns on the floor of living rooms or courtyards using materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand or flower petals outside of their house, called Rangoli which is meant to be a sacred welcoming area for the Gods and Goddesses of Hinduism.

I’ve decided to draw an awesome hipster girl. I drew this because I think she looks very stylish and cool. I’d have to say the most fun part to draw was her hair. I really like how wavy it is and I also liked giving it little details. I also like her hat and her cute heart t-shirt.

I drew this picture of Breakfast Princess from Adventure Time. The reason I have decided to draw her is because I think her character design is very clever. I love how they’ve made her skin the yolk and her hair the egg white and how they’ve made her dress out of toast, bacon and pancakes. One of my favourite features has to be how they’ve given her cute little cracked eggshell shoes. This adorable character is nice and just fun to draw in general.

Volunteer Ethics Coordinator Ashfield Public School

Dear Parents and Carers,

Ethics classes have been available at Ashfield Public School for a few years as an option for children who don’t attend Special Religious Educations (SRE/scripture).

The NSW government has authorised Primary Ethics, a not for profit organization, to create curriculum and recruit and train volunteers to teach these classes. In Ethics classes, children consider ethical decisions that affect them, their friends and family and learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence.

We need a new volunteer ethics coordinator to help organise classes.

The volunteer ethics coordinator is an administrative role coordinating the ethics teachers and liaising between the school and Primary Ethics. It requires a commitment of up to two hours per week. The time is flexible and the work is predominantly online. Training for the ethics coordinator is provided online.

For more information about Primary Ethics, the curriculum or to volunteer as an ethics coordinator, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au where you can complete an on-line application.
