Mediaset Espaňa, Spain’s No. 1 broadcaster, has been relying on Barco technology

since the early 2000s. The group has a total of 26 Barco cubes in its studios, 10

LCDs in the newsroom and four in the news feed room. Quite recently, this stack

of Barco gear was expanded with three LED-lit walls, set up in the refurbished

master control room and in the control room of the Cuatro TV channel.

A total of 13 LED-lit OLF-721 cubes help operators in these control rooms monitor

signals from all kinds of sources. Mediaset Espaňa appreciates the reliability,

Quality and reliability

“After the acquisition of Cuatro in 2010, we had to install an extra control room to monitor the Cuatro broadcasts. On top of that, we wanted to replace its technical gear in the master control room - the nerve center for all the channels,” explained our contact person at the engineering department. Did that call for more Barco? “We want to remain at the forefront of technology so we did look at other solutions for the control rooms. Still, we decided to go for Barco again as the products meet our technical needs and our requirements of ease-of-use, ease-of-maintenance and good image quality. This is combined with reliability: the incidence rate of Barco solutions is low, which is crucial to a broadcaster,” he continued.

Value-added advice

The team further appreciated Barco’s advice and extra support: “The challenge for the master control room project was how to replace the six existing displays with the new ones and add three extra displays, without going dark. Barco provided provisional LCD panels to use while breaking down the old wall and setting up the new one.”

Maintenance-free operation

Both the master control room and the Cuatro control room now feature a full HD LED video wall: 6x1 and 3x1 OLF-721 modules in the master control room and 4x1 OLF-721 in the Cuatro control room - the fi rst LED-lit installations at Mediaset Espaňa. Designed for an entirely maintenance-free operation over several years, the OLF-721 modules come complete with Sense6 sensor technology, which continuously measures brightness and color and optimizes the color space. The liquid cooling system ensures a lower LED temperature. “The result is longer LED lifetime and brighter images, which is just what we needed,” concluded the Mediaset team.
