Dr. Makarem Sobhi Batterjee has worked to improve and expand the delivery of healthcare services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Today, he is CEO of the largest private healthcare organization in the MENA region, Bait Al Batterjee Holding Company and Saudi German Hospitals Group, whose activities include hospital management, medical facility construction, pharmaceutical and device distribution, and professional medical education. Under his leadership, the organization is implementing an ambitious long-term expansion plan that will expand its footprint to 30 world-class hospitals and five medical colleges across the region.

A seasoned entrepreneur, he brings a visionary perspective on the evolution of the region’s “soft infrastructure” of healthcare and education. His insights into the interplay of healthcare, economic development and social change also inspired him to launch Shababco Enterprises, which specializes in consumer wellness initiatives as well as support for entrepreneurs. Dr. Batterjee graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a degree in Health Care Administration, and studied at the Thunderbird School of Global Management before earning an MBA in the Executive Programme at the top-ranked London Business School.

He was chosen by the World Economic Forum in 2008 as a Young Global Leader and is active in numerous international business organizations such as the Bretton Woods Committee. He was honored to be named Middle East Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009. Forging connections and partnerships is the foundation of Dr. Batterjee’s commitment to innovation. He served as the Founding President of the original Saudi chapter of the global Entrepreneurs’ Organization and today offers venture capital funding to sharia-conscious young businesses via Shababco. His civic contributions focus on the empowerment of women and youth and the promotion of community health.

The surname Batterjee itself means “one who performs surgery” (i.e. to remove disease and thus save lives), so it is quite fitting that, true to their roots, later generations still maintain their forebears’ focus on wellness.

Like many corporate dynasties in Arabia, Bait Al Batterjee Holding (BAB Holding) has its roots as a family trade. The Batterjee family brought the first modern medicine to this part of the world—in the 1920s, in the early stages of the state’s emergence, Shaikh Abdul Jalil Batterjee instituted the first national pharmacies.

The pharmacy business evolved to become an exclusive distributor for such companies as Glaxo, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol-Myers Squibb for more than two decades. Later, BAB Holding branched out into hospitals, allied healthcare facilities and curative, promotive and preventive health-oriented businesses. The family has also invested in real estate and has large reserves of asset-backed capital to support future business needs.

The Batterjees are one of the prominent families in the western region of Saudi Arabia, known for their entrepreneurial abilities, hard work, and above all their strong ethical practices. Engineer Sobhi A. Batterjee and Dr. Khalid A. Batterjee are the torch bearers of the group. The Batterjee Group remains to this day the largest family-owned healthcare enterprise in Arabia. Some of their other endeavors include higher education, youth incubation and finance, real estate investments, commercial development, wellness, construction, real estate and facilities management. Notably, this is the only Saudi family that devotes all its energy and efforts exclusively to healthcare—it is their sole focus and passion and is therefore given their undivided attention.
