DOROTHY KNOST
The legacy of Dorothy Knost lives on through our annual children’s summer music workshop. Mrs. Knost is best remembered as a local piano teacher whose career spanned six decades. She had a vision for the children of this area to have an opportunity to experience all types of music. The Children's Summer Music Workshop was established over thirty years ago.
Mrs. Knost had specific criteria for this workshop:
1. There would be no charge for children to attend.
2. Area musicians would donate their time for the children.
3. Children could choose their classes based on their interests.
4. Each day children would experience a concert.
2015 Registration begins May 1st.
You may register online at http: //cumc-portsmouth.org/#/childrens-ministry
*Open to all children entering grades 1-8 in the fall of 2015.
Due to Mrs. Knost's passion, perseverance, and dream, the Knost Children's Summer Music Workshop has been offered in our community since 1973.

―God of The Broken‖ Mural
This Easter is one many of us will remember for many years. What made this Easter so special was the
unveiling of our "God of the Broken‖ Mural. Over the season of Lent, which is the 40 days before Easter
we named the broken places in our lives writing them on tiles. These tiles were then placed on a mural
with a dove in the center. This dove represents the Holy Spirit who gives us the power to overcome and
live a victorious Christian life. A huge thank you to Peggy Harcha, Diane Applegate, Bridget Scott,
Heather Harcha, and Jeff Browne for all their work on it. You can view the video made by Dirk Cunning-
ham by going to Cornerstone's Facebook page.
Cornerstone Communication
Cornerstone utilizes several ways to communicate more effectively. We
have recently moved to a Like Page on Facebook. ―Like‖ us if you have
not already done so to keep current on the life of the church.

Confirmation
On April 26th, twelve students made a public profession of their faith for the first time.
Hunter Adams, Jayla Bowling, Bethany Flannery, Jacob Fraley, Matthew Fraulini, Morgan
Grashel, Abigail Halcomb, Ryan Penn, Makhayla Powers, Emily Raney, Sheridan Sutherland,
Kendra Waddell.
This awesome group spent the last few weeks covering topics such as creation, sin,
redemption, a church empowered by the Holy Spirit, made new in Christ, the sacraments, and
others. A huge thanks to our excellent teachers: Beth Rice, Jeff Bradley, Jay Darrell, Jonathan
James, and Chris Guilliams. Seven of these students were baptized.
There is now a part time position available. If interested contact Jennifer Roth on Sunday mornings or
713-591-2164.
Robbie Shugert has been the Assistant Children’s Director at
Cornerstone for 5 years. He is adored by the kids in our ministry.
Robbie resigned at the beginning of April. He wants to spend more
time in personal spiritual growth and see what God has to teach him
in a new season of life and ministry. Robbie will still be volunteering
once a month but we’ll definitely miss his faithfulness, positive attitude
and love for the kids. Next time you see him, tell Robbie thanks for a
job well done!

Dr. Wayne Young to Join Cornerstone Staff
On April 19th in worship we announced the exciting
news that Dr. Wayne Young is coming home! After
Wayne graduated from seminary, he went on
to get his Doctor of Medicine degree and practiced
medicine in Portsmouth for several years. While in Ports-
mouth he attended Wesley United Methodist teaching a large class called the
Searchers. Through his practice of medicine and time at Wesley, Wayne impacted hundreds
of people. In 2001, Wayne answered God's calling into full-time ministry as a pastor and was
appointed to Ironton First UMC as Lead Pastor. Wayne is a sports fan and enjoys cheering
for the Cincinnati Reds and the Ohio State University, as well as Ohio University, where he
played basketball in college. Wayne will serve as the Spiritual Formation Director of
Cornerstone beginning in July.
Youth Room Expansion Complete!
The youth of Cornerstone were in the new room on April 19th! There was much joy and
excitement seeing this dream become a reality. This space will enable us to fulfill our mission
of reaching the youth of Portsmouth for Jesus Christ. Thanks to the countless people who
scraped glue off the floor, painted, and gave generously. A huge thank you to Dave Liddle
for leading the project!

Given the pace of our 21st century lives, it is almost
impossible to imagine spending three consecutive days
with Jesus. Yet, this experience is actually possible.
Adults attending the Walk to Emmaus, and youth
attending a Chrysalis Flight, have such an opportunity.
The nature of an Emmaus or Chrysalis 3-day weekend is such that
participants really do have an opportunity to set aside the pace and stress associated with their
daily lives. Can you imagine that? During those three days they have a unique opportunity to
spend time in Christian fellowship living and learning together. It is a rare opportunity to set
distractions aside and journey with Jesus for three Spirit-filled days. Folks are rarely afforded such
an opportunity, and that spiritual focus is one of the many blessings of the weekend.
We are very fortunate to have three Emmaus communities within a one-hour drive from
Portsmouth. And, we are particularly blessed to host the Chrysalis Flights right here at
Cornerstone. Chrysalis serves students from the second semester of their freshman year of high
school through college age, (approximately age 23). Emmaus is open to adults of any age!
Reflecting on their Chrysalis or Emmaus weekend, most participants consider the experience to
be one of the most meaningful spiritual growth experiences of their lifetime.
If you would like more information about Chrysalis or Emmaus, please contact Pastor Tom
or Joanne Charles. Both would be delighted to share additional information with you, and answer
any questions you may have. Contact information is as follows:

Foodbank
Thank you Cornerstone saints who so faithfully support your monthly Foodbank! As requested, many of you
donated bathroom tissue, and, as recounted by Mary Harold, one of our guests shared ―It is the end of the
month and I have no money for toilet paper. I had been praying for toilet paper. When I came into the gym, I
knew that God had answered my prayers‖. Many other guests shared their profound appreciation for the
bathroom tissue and soap which they cannot purchase using their food stamps.
Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide this and many other very basic yet very essential food
items. Would you help us continue to provide this essential item for our May Foodbank by donating any size
package of bathroom tissue?
Connect Card
Look for some Sunday morning changes in May with a Connect Card in
your bulletin. There are several important aspects of this card that will
help us stay connected as a church family.
•weekly attendance •prayer requests •ministry opportunities
•tracking visitors •sign ups for various church happenings
We ask that folks fill them out on a weekly basis and place them in the offering plates. You will learn
more about Connect Cards on Sunday morning.

Deeper Roots
Deeper Roots, (Cornerstone's newest small group experience for 20/30-somethings and beyond),
continues to grow and develop. We embarked on a seven week spiritual journey in April studying the
Book of Acts in order to learn more about how the Christian church began. We encourage you to
join us for this time of scripture reading, study and fellowship. Please see the reading plan below. We
invite you to pick up with the readings as appropriate. New folks are welcome to join the group at
any time! We meet on Sunday morning at 10:10 a.m. in Room 107.

beginning of 1st Service. Kids should meet in the Welcome Center
at 9:20. The songs can be found at the following links if you want
to play them for your child:

kids will be working on a song with interpretative movement this summer. If you need more
information, contact Sarah Betten at [email protected] or 740-727-9789.
TOSRV
Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and with it comes the TOSRV cyclists. Again this year Rejoicing in
Recovery will be hosting a fundraiser dinner on Saturday, May 9th for the bikers dining at Cornerstone.
Last year we served a wonderful lasagna dinner, including salad, breadsticks, baked potatoes, and lots
of tasty treats for dessert. Rejoicing in Recovery will serve the same meal this year, and again we ask
you for your help! We would kindly ask that you take this opportunity to serve in one or more areas.
Serving: similar to our fair booth, we will be serving dinner in shifts starting at around 3 PM on Saturday.
Any help with serving would be greatly appreciated. There is also a need for
setup and cleanup help starting at 10 AM Saturday morning. For those of you
blessed with all things baked goods and desserts related, we again will be
taking donations of desserts for the dinner. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the
Welcome Center. If you have any further questions about how you can take part
in this service opportunity, contact Linda Toleman at 740 464-5960.
Men's Group Beginning New Study
The CUMC Men's Group meets every Saturday morning at 7:30AM.
Over the last several years we have watched our band of brothers grow in number. We show up,
not to have coffee and donuts (though they are provided ) but because we each need this fellowship
of men to have our backs.
Jesus lived his earthly life in a fellowship with twelve other men. We come together first and fore-
most for that rarest commodity in today's world: true male friends who are men we can trust and re-
spect.
Our studies give us a focal point for talk and prayer. Our next study will begin May 2. The book is
titled, "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day" by Mark Batterson.
Please consider joining us for this one. We will provide the book. Life throws some pretty difficult
situations our way. This study will center on how best to respond and triumph.
