EVER THE COACH, LUKASSTILL WINNING AT THE SPA
By Mike Kane
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - No, trainer D. Wayne Lukas did not
cash a ticket on Perplexed (Maimonides)=s $232.50 stunner
Monday at Saratoga Race Course.
AWe didn=t bet,@ Lukas said, laughing, Wednesday morning in
his office between sets at the Oklahoma training track.
While he did not think the 3-year-old Zayat Stables homebred
deserved to 115-1, Lukas was not expecting the colt to win the
maiden claimer on the sloppy, sealed track in his 10th career
start. Perplexed prevailed under apprentice Luis Reyes giving
Lukas, 81, his second victory of the 2017 Saratoga season. He
picked up his first on Saturday with the 2-year-old >TDN Rising
Star= Sporting Chance (Tiznow) breaking his maiden as the
second choice in the wagering. Sporting Chance, owned by
William Mack and Robert Baker, is headed to the GI Hopeful S.
on Sept. 4, the final day of the meet.
Lukas believes that Perplexed=s price was the highest of his
Hall of Fame career. Equibase stats, available from Jan. 1, 1995,
show that it is Lukas=s top payoff and the highest at Saratoga
since that date. However, it ranks just 98th nationally during
those 22 1/2 seasons.
Even though Perplexed had been beaten a total of 20 1/4
lengths in his last two starts at Churchill Downs, Lukas said he
was surprised by the odds that he saw on the tote board prior to
the first race of the day. Cont. p3
SARATOGA MAIDEN WIN COMES >FULL
CIRCLE= FOR MOTION by Steve Sherack
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Any trainer would be undoubtedly
excited looking to the future after Untamed Domain (Animal
Kingdom)=s >TDN Rising Star= performance on the opening
weekend of the prestigious Saratoga meeting (video).
But when the conditioner in question is Graham Motion, who
also saddled the juvenile colt=s freshman sire to memorable wins
in the 2011 GI Kentucky Derby and 2013 G1 Dubai World Cup,
you know this one had to feel a little extra special.
AI tell >ya, it really was,@ Motion said. AI didn=t anticipate it
being... it was almost somewhat emotional. It was just very cool
to have it sort of come around full circle. To head up to Saratoga
with one of his first 2-year-olds was pretty special, and to have
him run like that, it meant a lot to me.@

AWe remarked about it,@ he said. AIn the post parade, I said,
>look at this he=s jumping up to 80-1 already.= I turned to friends
of the Zayats, who were standing there next to us, and said,
>He=s not that bad. He=s training excellent. He=s liable to pull this
off.= We weren=t going to bet him or anything, but we felt like
we were going to be maybe second or third or fourth.@
To gain every advantage with Perplexed, Lukas gave the mount
to Reyes, a seven-pound apprentice. Reyes, who began riding in
the U.S. in January, delivered and earned his 17th career victory.
Lukas left teaching and coaching basketball behind to
concentrate on training. He won his first race at Saratoga Race
Course with Tartan Farms=s Dr. Patches on Aug. 26, 1978. He has
been a regular at the Spa since 1984 and has won the training
title six times. Barn 83, the farthest from the paddock and the
finish line on the main track, has been his base at Saratoga for
about 30 years. During the height of his distinguished career,
Lukas had divisions based at tracks across the country. As he
approaches his 82nd birthday on Sept. 2, Lukas is still very
enthusiastic and active with a 30-horse stable that he runs at
Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the Kentucky tracks and
Saratoga.
AI like it up here. It=s such a financial bloodbath and we accept
that,@ he said, chuckling again as he dusted off an old line. AFirst
of all, we rent a house for our help. If they rented in the
community their paycheck would be gone. We subsidize them.
We=ve got a nice house, but they rob us, too.
AWe=re so far in the hole when we run the first horse that if we
won the Travers, the Hopeful and the Alabama, we=d probably
break even.@
Lukas glanced at his wife, Laurie, who was putting on her
helmet to go out with the next set.
AWe absolutely love it,@ he said. AWe come up here and do the
charity things.@ Cont. p4

Lukas Still Winning at the Spa cont.
Lukas has won the Hopeful a record seven times, the last two
with colts owned by his longtime clients, Mack and Baker:
Strong Mandate (Tiznow, 2013) and Dublin (Afleet Alex, 2009).
Sporting Chance was purchased on behalf of that duo for
$575,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September sale.
AHe was my No. 1 pick when we looked at 3,000 head at the
Keeneland sale,@ Lukas said. AI=m not saying that just because he
won, but he was No.1. I was afraid my guys might even pull up a
little bit when we got north of $500,000, but they were game.
He=s absolutely a knockout-looking horse, too. I liked his
pedigree, being a Candy Ride (Arg) mare and everything.
AHe should have won his first out, but you never know when
you=re being blessed. It might have been good that he didn=t get
his first win. He got second. Got a little tired. That was for
$46,700 [at Churchill Downs]. Comes up here and and runs for
$83,000. He was set up with a race under his belt. When he ran
in the maiden race here, the rest were all first-time starters.@
In September 2015, about three weeks after his 80th birthday,
Lukas encountered some life-threatening heart issues caused by
blockages. He was treated and very quickly returned to work.
Lukas was up on his horse as usual Wednesday and said he is in
good health. Through the years he said he had talked with Hall
of Fame trainers Woody Stephens, Charlie Whittingham, Laz
Barrera and Ron McAnally about aging and working.
AWhen you get older the perception in racing is that maybe
you don=t have it any more,@ he said. AThe truth of it is, there is
no how-to book. If you=re mentally sharp and your health is
good, you should be a hell of a lot better than the guy who is 35
because you=ve seen it all. It=s a trial-and-error business. It really
is.@ Cont. p5

HIGHEST-PRICED D. WAYNE LUKAS WINNERS
While Perplexed might be the highest-priced D. Wayne Lukas winner
in history, a quick look at Equibase records shows that Lukas is no
stranger to big payoffs, including in some of the year’s biggest races.

Lukas continued, AThere is no place to look up >what do you do
with this or that, a horse is running out or screwing up in the
gate.= You have to have those experiences. The thing that has
made my assistants so effective is my coaching background. I
can=t help myself, I keep teaching. Whereas Charlie
Whittinghham told me, >Hell, I haven=t got time to explain all
that. Tell them to watch and they=ll get it down.=
ABut if you=ve ever taught or coached you can=t help yourself. If
I see Bill Mott=s horses doing something wrong, I=m over there
coaching Bill Mott.@

A rallying fourth with his share of trouble first time out
sprinting on the Laurel turf July 2 (video), the West Point
Thoroughbreds colorbearer was favored at 6-5 to get off the
mark while stretching to two turns in a grassy maiden special
weight at the Spa Saturday.
Content to trail the field of seven while saving ground through
easy fractions of :24.75 and :50.40, Untamed Domain was
traveling nicely and beginning to make headway until jockey
Jose Ortiz was forced to tap on the brakes in traffic entering the
far turn. Seemingly unfazed, Untamed Domain impressively
began to dial it back up, was swung widest of all into the stretch
and rocketed home to register a 1 1/2-length decision. The
$90,000 KEESEP yearling purchase covered his final quarter in
:22.86, according to Trakus data. The next fastest clocking was
:23.26.
AI really don=t think he could=ve been any more impressive,@
Motion said. AI knew that stretching him out was going to be the
key, but we thought he may have enough zip first time sprinting.
He really didn=t have a very good trip that time either, so he=s
kind of had two troubled trips now. He certainly ran well enough
to overcome it the other day and I thought he won very
comfortably.@
Races like the GIII With Anticipation S. at the Spa Aug. 30 with
a future eye on the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf this fall at Del
Mar are all in the conversation now for Untamed Domain. Bred
in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, he is out of the stakes winner
and graded stakes-placed Ciao (Lear Fan) and his third dam is
French Group 1 winner Smuggly (Caro {Ire}).
AI think it definitely makes sense to run back in the With
Anticipation,@ Motion said. AThe timing is very good and that
would be a good stepping stone. I certainly feel very good about
the direction that he=s going.@
Motion continued, AOne of the coolest things about him is that
he=s kind of got Animal Kingdom=s disposition. He takes things
very well and very much in his stride. He doesn=t get too wound
up about anything, which I think is going to be very important
for him down the road. Obviously it=s early days, but he certainly
showed that tremendous turn of foot that Animal Kingdom
would show, too.@

Motion said that he trains Aa couple of more@ offspring by
Animal Kingdom, and may have another promising runner by the
young sire on his hands with the filly Cyrielle, who is set to
debut in the fifth race at Saratoga Thursday, a 5 1/2-furlong
maiden special weight on grass. The $300,000 KEESEP yearling
purchase, owned by Team Valor International and Gary Barber,
is out of the Forestry mare Somethinaboutbetty, a four-time
stakes winner and runner-up in Saratoga=s 2006 GIII Lake George
S. Her worktab includes three bullet breezes at Motion=s Fair Hill
base in Maryland.
ALook, it=s a Saratoga maiden so you never know what you=re
getting into, but she certainly had shown enough here [at Fair
Hill],@ Motion said. AAgain, with this filly, I thought she showed a
little more zip in the morning that perhaps we could run her
short one time. Certainly, she=s ready to run.@
Untamed Domain became the second American winner for
Animal Kingdom, who is also represented by the two-for-two
Debutante S. heroine Sunny Skies. The son of Leroidesanimaux
(Brz) also has six Australian winners, including >TDN Rising Star=
Earth Angel (Aus).
Animal Kingdom stood the 2017 season for $30,000 at Darley=s
Jonabell Farm in Kentucky. A $550,000 colt purchased by
Solis/Litt at OBS March out of Miss Lomardi (Unbridled Jet) was
his most expensive of 19 2-year-olds sold in 2017. From his 50
first-crop yearlings that switched hands in 2016--good for an
average of $99,388--a $400,000 filly out of Eltimaas
(Ghostzapper) acquired by Juddmonte at KEESEP led the way.
AMy personal observations are that the colts tend to be sort of
a little more robust and more like him,@ Motion concluded.
AWhereas the fillies are a little more refined, and a little more, I would say, >flashy= and more >sales types= than the colts. Look, he didn=t break his maiden until the fall of his 2-year-old year, so he wasn=t really an early 2-year-old type himself and I think a
lot of the colts are built that way, too.@ Return to p1

Sent off the second favorite in Wednesday=s GII Honorable

Paulassilverlining called on the class that had seen her annex

Content to amble along in third as the favorite took some early
pace pressure to her inside from longshot Disco Chick (Jump

inside of three furlongs to race and the two chief combatants
were side by side at the top of the stretch. Brian Hernandez, Jr.

Shoulder to shoulder into the final eighth of a mile,
Finley=sluckycharm clung on gamely, but Paulassilverlining was
equally determined and found the wire first. By the Moon,
backed late from 5-1 into 7-2, had every chance to run down the
top two, but was forced to settle for a close third.
"Six [furlongs] is just a little short for her,@ said trainer Chad
Brown, winning the Honorable Miss for the first time. AShe
showed that with barely getting up there at the wire, but good
horses overcome things like this, taking them out of their
element just a touch. She's done that today. She was giving the
other filly some weight and she was a real quality horse. For this
caliber of race, [it was] not that fast and 'Paula' was able to wear
her down. It was a great stretch duel. I'm glad we were able to
come out on top.@
Beaten a neck as the favorite in the 2016 Honorable Miss,
Paulassilverlining sandwiched victories in the GII Gallant Bloom
H. Oct. 1 and the Dec. 10 Garland of Roses S. around a third-
place effort behind Finest City (City Zip) in last year=s
GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Purchased privately as a
future suitor for Juddmonte=s >TDN Rising Star= Arrogate at the
end of his racing days, Paulassilverlining proved games in
landing Keeneland=s GI Madison S. Apr. 8 and was having her
first start since turning the tables on Finest City in the
GI Humana Distaff S. on the Derby undercard May 6.
Brown indicated that the winner would line up next in the
GI Ballerina S. Aug. 26, a race in which she was fifth last
summer.
Pedigree Notes:
With her Madison success, Paulassilverlining became the most
recent of 10 Grade I winners for Adena Springs=s Ghostzapper,
who is also the sire of the winner=s yearling full-sister. Seeking
the Silver, herself a full-sister to SW Choctaw Ridge, foaled a colt
by Ghostzapper=s sire Awesome Again this season. In addition to
Paulassilverlining, Seeking the Silver is the dam of two-time
GI Carter H. hero Dads Caps (Discreet Cat) and the stakes-placed
Liza Too (Olmodavor).

Curlin Road was given a patient ride by Flavien Prat,
outfinished defending champion Hard Aces and withstood a
highly questionable claim of foul to take Wednesday=s featured
GIII Cougar II H. at Del Mar. Allowed to box-seat the 12-furlong
dirt marathon from a ground-saving position, the bay gelding
was quietly ridden behind a moderate pace through the middle
stages of the race. Hard Aces, last but two down the
backstretch, began to creep into contention while three and
four wide on the track and got first run, looping rivals with what
appeared to be a winning move on the swing for home. Knowing
he had horse underneath him, Prat was happy to allow Hard
Spun to go on with it and pulled out Curlin Road to launch his
bid leaving the quarter pole. Hard Spun and jockey Santiago
Gonzalez came out and bumped with Curlin Road soon after and
initiated contact on a few other occasions, but Curlin Road
managed to drop his nose down on the wire first. The claim of
foul was quickly dismissed by stewards.
"My horse was game,@ Prat said. AHe wanted to win that race.

WHERE'S THE SWAMP?by Tim Wickes
It's been a double fortnight (I always talk like this for a while
after Wimbledon) since the trial and guilty/not guilty verdicts of
Murray Rojas and I've spent a lot of time ruminating on the
vagaries of how we are represented by our legal system, our
horsemen, and our industry leaders. Sad to say, after a week of
testimony and a mixed return from the jury, we seem to be left
with more questions than answers.
First, some back story. About five years ago near as I can tell,
FBI Special Agent Bruce Doupe, acting on a tip, started down an
investigatory road on the backside at Penn National in the
bucolic Blue Mountains of central PA. Starting in 2012, the first
round of sleuthery resulted in the indictments of David Wells
and two other trainers as well as clocker Danny Robertson. A
year later, Wells and Robertson pled to lesser charges because
they Acooperated@ with the ongoing investigation. Wells and
Robertson led the way to Stephanie Beattie partly because
Wells and Beattie were no longer playing house--and nothing
like a trainer scorned. David sang like a canary. And then Beattie
leads the well named G-man Doupe and his prosecutor in crime
William Behe to Murray Rojas and--eureka! The Feds had their
Whale, their Dapper Don, and their Voldemort all rolled into
one. Murray Rojas. And hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to trial we go. The
FBI, a federal prosecutor, five years of time, investigations,
taxpayer money, you name it forY Murray Rojas.
They had Stephanie Beattie dead to rights. She, by her own
later testimony, broke just about every rule in the book and
more than a few than the rule book writers haven't thought up
yet. They had their big fish, but Doupe and Behe decided to let
Beattie roll over so they could get Rojas and the vets. Oh wait,
they didn't really get the vets either. Kevin Brophy, Fernando
Motta, and two other miscreants were allowed to roll over to
get toY Rojas.
These vets were the guys that taught the trainers how to
cheat. They had a form to fill out for race-day meds in a state
that only allows Lasix on race day. These were the guys that
back dated the billing and paperwork that they turned into the
state. These were the guys who knew the ins and outs of the
stale lab and, in some cases, what drugs were being tested and
for when. These were the guys who figured out that if they cut
the Robinul dose and gave it i/v instead of i/m it wouldn't test
and they'd beat the lab. But not worth throwing them in the
hoosgow? Nope, let's not get the vets when we can getY Rojas.
Let's let the dealer roll over so that we can get the addict.

So far, there are a lot of guys and dolls in this tale, but not
much that would be Runyonesque unless ol= Damon hooked up
with Elmore Leonard and wrote the pilot for Real Housewives of
Grantville. It's a sad, sad story, but Rojas? Curly and Larry, I
mean Doupe and Behe, had David Wells for 10 years' worth of
criminality; but he got three months because he gave them
Beattie. And they had Beattie like they had gray suits and gruff
demeanors. They had her all fitted up for a corner cell at
Allenwood, but they let her roll over like Beethoven so they
could get the dealers/vets, and I'm ok with that. Get the vets.
Get them for bribing the guys in the lab. Get them for their
mountain of fraudulent paperwork. Get them for creating a
system whose primary goal was to beat the system. Just get
them. But for the love of Steve Carlton, don't let the big fish roll
over so you can catch a minnow. As my kids would say, AGrow a
pair.@ You had some out and out criminals on the hook and you
let them walk like Egyptians so you could convict Murray Rojas
of misbranding, I.e. using medications for purposes or in a
fashion other than said medication's prescribed use. After five
years, no wire fraud, no race fixing, just misbranding. What a
waste of our money.
The flip side of all this is we do have a problem here. Being a
racehorse trainer is a tough gig these days. Most of your
employees are undocumented, you barely break even on the
day money--that's if you get paid on time--and the pressure to
win is overwhelming. Trainers take an edge, often too much of
one. In the Paulick Report Friday Show, Editor-in-Chief Scott
Jagow glibly referred to Athe cesspool of PA racing.@ If Jagow or
anyone else thinks this is just a PA problem, then I've got some
nifty dockage in the Mojave to sell them. The trouble with the
view from the eighth pole is the angle stinks. The Rojas trial
testimony was just a window in to a national issue because in
every track in the land the motto exists: AIf you ain't cheatin',
you ain't tryin'.@
So let's point some fingers. First there was an underfunded
and seemingly clueless state racing commission that, despite
boots on the ground on the backside, was played like Perlman's
fiddle by the vets and the horsemen. Second, there's a racetrack
that, in spite of being granted a casino monopoly by the state,
cares tons more about its slots than its ponies and therefore
throws boatloads of money at policing the casino while looking
away from the racing. Third, there's the TRPB. They exist, right?
According to the TRPB mission statement, it is supposed to
Aconcentrate its attention on those areas which most
significantly affect the integrity of racing.@ Sounds like they need
to concentrate a little harder. Fourth, there's the vets, and I
know I'm gonna hear about this one. There's a dozen or so vets
at Penn National who it seems couldn't find integrity if you
slapped them in the vet box with it.
For the most part, these men and women are in control of the
medications on the backside and it may be a good time for them
to use that power for good instead of for evil. They can choose
the high ground or the swamp of their own making. Finally, the
horsemen. It's time for all of us to stop giving lip service to
cleaner sport and level playing fields and actually do something
about it. We don't need some pious billionaire preaching at us;
we just need to finally do the right thing before it's too late.
PETA rummaged around in our dirty closet once already, and
they will again. If they're willing to attack a guy for saving his
dog from a canicidal kangaroo, they sure as hell will roll up their
sleeves against some racehorse trainers. And, when they do, the
New York Times and others will be right there with them.
I hate the job the Feds did with this case at Penn Nat. They
went after the wrong people, letting the crooks walk whilst
going after someone who was doing little more than trying to
keep up with the Joneses. It was a waste of time, money, and
judgement, and the ultimate failure of the case sends out all the
wrong messages going forward. Separate from that, the system
of checks and balances that we currently lean on has neither.
The National HPBA claims that the Feds had no business sticking
their noses in racing's business, but that's just crap. The Feds got
involved because the inmates were running the asylum. The fact
that they proved to be so completely incompetent should in no
way lead us to believe they won't try again with a better result.
Let's stop patting ourselves on the backs for running off a Rick
Dutrow here and stringing up a Murray Rojas there and get to
some greater truths. We are the problem, all of us. We don't
need to fix Athem,@ we need to fix us. And we need to do it soon.

McANALLY BACK TO WORK AFTER FALL Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally returned to his stable office
Wednesday morning, three days after taking a tumble that
required an overnight hospital stay. McAnally was in attendance
at a party at the Solana Beach home of Pamplemousse Grill
owner Jeffrey Strauss after the races Sunday night when a knee,
surgically repaired a few years ago, gave out on him.
AI turned the wrong way on it, went down and hit my head on
the concrete,@ McAnally, 85, said. AWhen I was laying there on
the ground, they asked me how I felt and I said, >About like Bob
Baffert felt when (Arrogate) ran the other day. Even Baffert got
a laugh out of that.@
McAnally was taken away on a stretcher and spent about a day
and a half in a hospital undergoing tests and observations.
Results were negative, clearing McAnally to return to the track
where he=s been a regular since 1948. McAnally ranked third on
Del Mar=s all-time trainer wins list to start the season, with his
444 wins behind only Mike Mitchell (476) and Baffert (466) and
number two on the stakes-winning trainer roll with 77 to
Baffert=s 121.
FISHER AIMS TWO AT A. P. SMITHWICKby Don Clippinger
Even by trainer Jack Fisher's lofty standards, 2017 has been an
amazing year.
The Maryland horseman, the latest in a long succession of
Fishers who figured prominently in the steeplechase world, has
been fracturing records with regularity. He is the only trainer in
the National Steeplechase Association's history to exceed
$1-million in annual earnings, and he has done so three times.
For the longest time, it appeared that the overall NSA trainer
earnings record--now just over $23 million and held by Racing
Hall of Fame member Jonathan Sheppard--would stand forever.
That virtual certainty is being questioned as Fisher, 54, keeps
throwing up million-dollar seasons, with a third straight in
prospect. His earnings now exceed $14 million.
His first million-dollar season was in 2008, when stable star
Good Night Shirt (Concern) went undefeated. Sonny Via, Jr.=s
Good Night Shirt will take his place in the National Museum of
Racing=s Hall of Fame Aug. 4.
NSA race meets paid record spring purses this year, and Fisher
seized a record chunk of them. His current total is $638,800,
which is more than three times the purses earned by Sheppard,
his closest competitor.
Fisher will be looking to add to his earnings total on Thursday
in Saratoga Race Course=s G1 A. P. Smithwick Memorial H., one
of two $150,000 steeplechase stakes on the Saratoga menu.
Four weeks later, the prize will be the G1 New York Turf
Writers Cup H.

Mr. Hot Stuff | Sarah Andrew
Fayeq | Sarah Andrew
His most intriguing prospect is Edith Dixon's homebred
Schoodic (Tiznow)--if Schoodic chooses to behave. He is a
strapping 7-year-old by a scion of the Man o' War line who has
shown promise as a jumps sire. Schoodic is capable of a
top-level victory when he chooses to run, but his past
performances betray a Jekyll-and Hyde personality.
Against top-shelf competition in the Virginia Gold Cup's G2
David Semmes Memorial May 6, he drew away to a confident
two-length score. Then, against lesser opponents two weeks
later, he checked in fifth with a substitute jockey after regular
rider Paddy Young was injured in the preceding race. Sean
McDermott, the Irish veteran who rides Fisher=s best horses, has
the mount in the Smithwick.
Fisher also will saddle owner Gillian Johnston's Mr. Hot Stuff
(Tiznow), who was sufficiently hot to place in the 2009 GI Santa
Anita Derby (behind winner Pioneerof the Nile) and won the 2
1/16-mile Smithwick in 2013. Now 11, Mr. Hot Stuff missed last
season and finished third behind Fisher-trained division leader
Scorpiancer (Ire) (Scorpion {Ire}) and Portrade (Ire) (Trade Fair
{Ire) in the G3 Temple Gwathmey Handicap in April.
The Fields Stable=s Portrade heads the Smithwick lineup, and
he will be in his accustomed place on the lead. He nearly held on
to win last year's Smithwick, finishing third, and he then wired
the New York Turf Writers for his first Grade 1 score. Gus Dahl
rides Portrade.
Elizabeth Voss, who trains Portrade, also will have a notable
day Aug. 4 when her late father, trainer Tom Voss, will be
inducted into the Hall of Fame. For the Smithwick, she also will
saddle Robert Kinsley's newcomer Modem (GB) (Motivator
{GB}), who will be ridden by Jack Doyle.
Sheppard, whose 47-year record of at least one Saratoga
winner per meet ended last season, will be looking to start a
new streak with Buttonwood Farm's All the Way Jose (Senor
Swinger), who has returned to top form under apprentice jockey
Keri Brion, who also is Sheppard's assistant.

of wins against claiming company over the lawn at Tampa Bay
Downs this winter and, after a non-factor fifth against open
company in a June 8 Delaware allowance, returned to the
winner=s circle with a late-closing one-length tally in a Laurel
optional claimer June 25. The 6-1 shot was unhurried early and
settled at the back of the field behind moderate splits. He
inched closer along the rail down the backstretch and waited
patiently for racing room before angling out six wide turning for
home. He bound to the lead with eye-catching acceleration and
powered clear to an emphatic 4 1/2-length score. Unapologetic
(Temple City) was second. Glen Hill Farm purchased You Go

ENABLE GIVEN KINGGEORGE GO-AHEAD
Khalid Abdullah=s dual Classic-winning filly Enable (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}) has been given the go-ahead by trainer John
Gosden to face elder males in Saturday=s G1 King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot.
"John is happy with her and she's going to head to Ascot,@
confirmed the owner=s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe.
Enable is ante-post favourite for the ,1.15-million contest off
commanding scores in the G1 Investec Oaks and G1 Darley Irish
Oaks, which she won by five and 5 1/2 lengths, respectively.
Frankie Dettori, who will have to get down to close to his
minimum weight to ride Enable on Saturday, revealed on
Wednesday that the filly had thrown him off the morning
before.
"I rode Enable yesterday morning and believe it or not she
dumped me on the floor,@ he said. AI was like, 'thanks very
much!' Luckily, I fell standing up but she still dumped me. She is
just full of herself right now and raring to go."
Dettori has yet to return to race riding full time since injuring
his shoulder in early June, but he said the ride on Enable
tempted him to return earlier than planned.
"She was the reason I came back from injury so early,@ he
wrote on his Ladbrokes blog. AShe really is special. I pushed
myself so I could ride her in Ireland and it was worth it.
AIt's been a tough rehabilitation but I'm delighted to report I'mfeeling good and getting stronger every day.@ "The King George is a tough race but I'm really excited,@Dettori added. AShe's getting a big weight allowance so she'sentitled to be at the head of the market." In other King George news, Gerald Mosse has picked up theride on Sixties Song (Arg) (Sixties Icon {GB}), who will be thefirst-ever Argentinian-trained runner at Ascot. "It looks a very competitive race but he is the top horse inArgentina," Mosse said. "I'm excited to ride in the King George,it's a great race to be a part of." Mosse's agent Shippy Ellis said, "We were looking at riding atNewmaket but Gerald looked at the videos [of Sixties Song] andwas keen to ride him. He does have some form on soft groundbut he'd prefer it quicker, I think. It's a proper King George, make no mistake, and the connections deserve credit for comingand having a go. He's a big price but I think he'll outrun it."

MOYGLARE NEXT UP FOR ALPHA CENTAURI >TDN Rising Star= Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}),
who suffered her first defeat when a neck second to Different
League (Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}) in the G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot on
June 23, will be seen next in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. at The
Curragh on Sept. 10, according to the Niarchos family=s racing
manager Alan Cooper. The form of the Albany is thus far
working out quite well, with fifth-placed Madeline (Ire) (Kodiac
{GB}) subsequently winning at listed level and sixth-placed
Actress (Ire) (Declaration Of War) and seventh Clemmie (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) winning at group level.
"I spoke with [trainer] Jessica [Harrington] on Monday and she
tells me the filly is in good form and the plan is to run in the
Moyglare,@ said Cooper. AShe'll go straight there. The Albany has
produced an incredible amount of winners already and we look
forward to seeing Alpha Centauri run again."
Cooper also provided an update on the Niarchos family=s
G1 Prix de Diane winner Senga (Blame), who is enjoying a
summer break before an autumn campaign.
"All going well, Senga is going for the Prix de l'Opera on Arc
day,@ Cooper said. "[Trainer] Pascal [Bary] is still considering
whether to give her a prep race beforehand."

ANA O=BRIEN OUT OF HOSPITAL Jockey Ana O=Brien, who suffered injuries including fractured
vertebrae in her neck and back and fractured cheekbones in a
fall at Killarney on July 18, has left the hospital, according to
Racing Post. Father Aidan O=Brien told the publication, "Ana was
released from hospital [on Tuesday]. She's delighted to be home
and, all things considered, she's in good form and very grateful
and appreciative of the excellent care she received both at
Killarney and in hospital."
O=Brien, who was riding Druids Cross (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) for
her brother Joseph O=Brien when her mount was fatally injured,
is expected to be out three to four months.
THE SEEDS OF FUTURITY A cursory glance at the honour roll of Leopardstown=s G3 JRA
Tyros S. suggests it is a race for racing=s clairvoyants to take
seriously, with eight of the last 11 winners proceeding to leave a
significant mark on the turf=s annals. The final six all hailed from
Rosegreen and while there are two to represent that
establishment on Thursday, the clear principal is the >TDN Rising
Star= The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who emanates from an
Aga Khan family of strong-staying middle-distance luminaries.
Derrick Smith=s colourbearer looked to possess abundant pace
and had a definite touch of Rip Van Winkle (Ire), Cape Blanco
(Ire), Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and even Churchill (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) about him when beating some interesting
yardsticks by upwards of 8 1/2 lengths in a Curragh maiden over
this trip on July 15.

The Seeds of Futurity Cont.
Jim Bolger, who saddled Teofilo (Ire) and New Approach (Ire)
to win this in 2006 and 2007, significantly puts forward his
homebred son of the former champion in Theobald (Ire). He
beat Ballydoyle=s other challenger, Berkeley Square (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}), by 2 1/2 lengths over a mile on debut here on June 22
before running second to another from that stable in Actress
(Declaration of War) in the G3 Anglesey S. over what was
probably an inadequate extended six furlongs at The Curragh on
July 15.
FEEL-GOOD FACTOR
While it does not enjoy the same kudos as the Tyros, the
G3 Jockey Club of Turkey Silver Flash S. at Leopardstown is still a
hotbed of distaff talent and Thursday=s edition features one for
the pedigree gurus in Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). While her
defeat of the re-opposing Shalailah (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) and
fair stablemate Sizzling (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a seven-furlong
maiden at The Curragh on June 30 lacked the pizzazz of The
Pentagon=s display at the same track, the chief Ballydoyle envoy
has all the foundations for a prominent career. A sister to the
2014 Tyros winner Gleneagles (Ire) and Irish 1000 Guineas
heroine Marvellous (Ire) from the dynasty of Giant=s Causeway,
she is joined by the decisive July 13 course-and-distance maiden
scorer Easter Lily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) as they look to bring a sixth
renewal to Aidan O=Brien since 2009.
The stable=s former rider Johnny Murtagh seeks to upset the
applecart with Qatar Racing Limited=s Golden Spell (GB) (Al
Kazeem {GB}), who on the form of her success as the highweight
in a six-furlong nursery at The Curragh on July 16 is the best filly
in the race.

AThe Jog for Jockeys is a very special race, allowing runners

Murtagh added, AThe Injured Jockeys is such an important
