President’s Letter- Matt Grulke

My Fellow SIM Philadelphia Chapter Members:

During the October dinner meeting we announced changes to the Philadelphia Chapter SIM Leadership award. Here are the specifics: The nominations for the award will now be limited to SIM Philadelphia chapter

members. The nomination period is between October 1st and December 31st. The winner will be chosen in January and announced at our February dinner

meeting. The nominees will be assessed both on their involvement in key technology

initiatives and contributions to the chapter and local community. I believe these are healthy changes to the award that will allow us to bring more attention to the fabulous work our members are doing at work and to support technology in the Delaware Valley. Please get your nominations to Maureen Waddington by December 31st and help us recognize your colleagues in the chapter! On a final note my term as president is quickly coming to an end. I am very thankful for all of the support the membership and board members have given me this year. I am also thrilled that Jeff Berger will soon become our new president. He will clearly be tremendous in the role. All the best, Matt Grulke

SIM Meeting Recap – October 6, 2015

The Conflicts of Social Media in the Workplace: Afternoon Seminar SummarySummary by Steve Enoch

Presented by Mark Alberto, Director of Information Systems, The Graham Company; Victoria Fringer, Director of Information Technology, Valley Forge Educational Services; Andrew Clibanoff, Co-Founder and CEO, Workforce Scientific; David Hackett, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney; Robin Bond, Principal and Founder, Transition Strategies, LLC; Moderator: Larry Bilker, SVP & CIO, Continuity Logic

The focus of the seminar was to explore the use of social media (SM) in the workplace.  The panel was a nice mix of representatives from commercial firms, legal, and academic.  Items explored included: How SM is used in the hiring process – A mixture of most SM applications was

used. What was liked and disliked about SM – Positives included being able to use SM for

sales and marketing, and for activity posting.  Negatives included opportunities for fraud – ex. generating spoofing emails from company executives.

How SM is used to promote a business – Provides valuable data, ex. Twitter analytics; promotes company culture; can be used a push service.  Need to apply effort to be able to search and use the large amounts of unstructured SM data.

Legal issues - SM account/data ownership ex. who owns the LinkedIn account for a terminated employee;

Importance of crafting the proper internal policy on who might own company related SM pages.  It is important to understand the terms of the SM applications.  Never comingle personal and business activity within the SM context.

SM site blocking and policy – Make sure policies established are not too limiting.  May need to establish policy on permissible posting of material on SM sites.  Internal use should keep in mind worker productivity.  Be careful not to violate NLRB laws. Employees using SM applications while using an employer’s WIFI should have no expectation of privacy.  SM laws are evolving.  Many precedents still are not set.  Because SM is so profoundly used by the younger workforce, need

to consider in policies.  Several background check companies are now reviewing SM sites.

The Latest News in Cybersecurity: Dinner presentation summarySummary by John Litak Presented by Dennis Gilbert, Director of Information and Cyber Security, Corporate and Information Security Services, Exelon Corporation

"Actors are Amongst Us!" - Cyber threats, understanding threat actors and their use of Cyber Kill Chain.   On October 6th, Mr. Gilbert provided an enlightening and fascinating review of Cybersecurity trends. He reviewed the classes of threat actors, reminding of us of a growing sophistication and level of resources available to today's threats. The days have passed where only "script kiddies" are seeing what they can do with their code- Now there are targeted attacks by organized crime, nation states, and hacktivist groups. These groups are specifically targeting organizations and information. It's important to understand what they might be after so you know requires the most attention to security. Know your adversary!

Mr. Gilbert also outlined the Cyber Kill Chain (CKC), a model that shows the steps a threat actor must take to achieve its final objective. It incorporates multiple attack vectors including people, process, and technology. Each step represents an opportunity to thwart an attack and provides a visualization for identifying capabilities and potential security gaps in your defenses. Cost optimization is achieved by mitigating an attack as early in the CKC as possible, resulting in significantly lower costs than having to respond and recover.

He provided examples of how the Kill Chain is progressed and how attacks were developed and orchestrated against Sony, a Wind Farm, and a German Steel Mill. Some common themes of these hacks showed lack of segmentation, monitoring, and log

analysis. These gaps resulted in an inadequate understanding of the state of their operating environment. Some practical advice was offered:

Focus on protecting your data; prioritize your efforts on the most critical data Remember the fundamentals; don't be distracted by shiny objects Prepare for a breach; practice your incident response plan

Adversaries are well-funded and history shows they persist tirelessly. It’s not a matter of if… It's when… Be prepared!
