In 1967 in Surrey - England, five young men came together to create what no one knew at the time, was to be one of biggest musical acts in the world…GENESIS!

Throughout their 40 year career, Genesis went on to make no less than 15 studio albums which were accompanied by a host of well received live concert albums with the bands fan base running into the millions. They are continually cited many times over as a major influence for other high profile bands and musicians - a sure testament to the fantastic music they have written and produced for the appreciation and enjoyment of others since that fateful day in the 1960s when the group formed.

As avid and exceedingly passionate admirers of Genesis for many years and very much standing in the shadows of Genesis themselves, five young (ish!) men came together in November 2009 with the sole intention of creating a magnificent showcase of Genesis songs covering both the Peter Gabriel, and Phil Collins eras.

The GENESIS spectacular is a collection of songs from all Genesis era's including Land of Confusion, The Knife, Firth of Fifth, Jesus He Knows Me, I Know What I Like, The Musical Box, Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Carpet Crawlers, Turn It On Again and Mama - all performed to the highest level by Genesis fans; for Genesis fans, shrouded within an outstanding “Genesis style” light show.

GENESISH have quickly earned a reputation for being very much at the top of their game, receiving rapturous acclaim from not only fans in the UK but also from around the world. GENESISH have a large following on Facebook which is growing daily as word spreads about this phenomenal tribute band, having performed to large numbers in music venues across the UK.

GENESISH consists of five talented musicians from the North of England who have each developed their craft over many years, with a significant influence of Genesis running throughout their musical journeys. John Kirby – Lead Vocals, Percussion & Drums Gary Gordon – Guitars Mike Dagnall – Bass & Bass Pedals Neil Gordon – Keyboards Mike Walker – Drums

John began drumming at the age of nine with his dad giving him his introduction to Genesis not long after. His dad would listen to Genesis day and night which quickly rubbed off on the young John who couldn't help listening to the same music as he did. John had various musical influences as he grew up such as Bruce Springsteen, Marillion, David Bowie and Queen, but his favourite albums were 'Genesis' by Genesis, and 'Script for a Jesters Tear' by Marillion. Bands such as Rush, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Foo Fighters, and Muse are also cited as big musical influences. John's musical journey has included playing the drums and performing backing vocals for both covers and original material bands over the

years with some of his own material being written alongside. John took up the challenge of 'singing properly' as he calls it about two years ago and when the opportunity of performing like one of his heroes came about; Phil Collins, this was an opportunity he felt he couldn't miss. John was always admired Phil Collins as both a singer and a drummer and says " I hope I can deliver a performance that will bring back some memories for both the audience and myself, that shows the level of appreciation I have for what Genesis has done over the years."

Gary converted to guitar after first starting with keyboards in his youth, His musical adventure was put in motion by writing and recording music with original bands such as 'Tirian Flame' and 'Magrathea', the latter having recorded 4 albums and supported 'The John Young Band' and 'Pallas', amongst others.

Gary's first Genesis encounter was around the early 80's when he first heard 'A Trick Of The Tail'. This was the start of an obsession of biblical proportions. Favorite songs include, One For The Vine and The Battle Of Epping Forest. His spare time is spent writing and recording music at home, in between football, cycling, fishing and dog walking!

Since being given his first bass when he was 13 (which he still uses 30 years later), Mike has used every opportunity to grow as a performer and player. Starting out in Working Men's clubs at a very early age, Mike quickly built a reputation as a reliable and professional musician which produced opportunities to work, play and stand beside some of the biggest names in rock and pop.

An experienced touring and recording musician, Mike is no stranger to the covers and tribute scene before joining Genes-ish, and his energetic performances and strong backing vocals have made him an integral part of everything he has been involved in. Genesis was one of the first major concerts he went to in the mid eighties. "Going to that gig was my first experience of a major outdoor event and despite the rain in the afternoon, it engrained the music of Genesis into my brain.

That year the Invisible Touch album was never off the cassette player." "Seeing Genesis during this period confirmed to me what I wanted to do." The opportunity to join Genes-ish was one not to be missed and Mike sees it as a challenge and a privilege to pay tribute to the great Mike Rutherford.

Neil was introduced to keyboards from originally picking up the guitar at an early age, after what he proclaimed was a natural transition for a ”techno geek‟. Neil’s first taste of Genesis came in the mid 70‟s when his cousin played him tracks from “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway‟ and other albums – from there he was hooked.

Like the rest of the members of GENES-ISH Neil began his musical apprenticeship via original material and covers bands, one of which supported British rock band Magnum.

Neil’s main influences come from classic prog-rock bands such as ELP, Yes and Marillion and is a fan of the early Genesis material citing “Stagnation‟ and “White Mountain‟ as two of his favourite songs.

Mike first got into Genesis when his drum teacher played him 'And Then There Were Three'. He was knocked out by the epic quality of the music and the originality of the drumming. The first big gig he saw was a Steve Hackett concert which left its mark on him because of the mix of great musicianship and impressive visuals. Mike has played all over the world in many bands, playing jazz, rock and orchestral music. As well as listening to Genesis he is a fan of Steely Dan, XTC and 20th century classical music. Mike composes and teaches and has a music degree from Salford University.

Jeff, Dave & Mik - a.k.a 'The Three Amigos' are 'skilled craftsmen' when it comes to the visual element of the show. All three are avid, passionate and very knowledgeable Genesis fans, which is clearly evident from the

spectacular lighting show they produce for GENESISH. The guys' philosophy is to emulate various aspects of the original Genesis shows throughout the years to greatly enhance the music of GENESISH. As Jeff says "our aim is to give everyone who comes to see the show a little 'tongue in cheek' piece of Genesis themselves. Whether it be a nostalgic reminder for those having been to a Genesis show in the past, or to those who weren't lucky enough to see Genesis perform live; a slice of the visual feasts the band presented at each and every show throughout the years".

Each song GENESISH perform is carefully broken down by Jeff, Dave & Mik so that maximum performance value; when it comes to the lighting, is achieved to turn a humble 'gig' into a magnificent show.

If you want to see the band in action to see why you should treat yourself to this superbly accurate re-enactment of one of the worlds greatest ever prog rock bands, go to www.genesish.co.uk. This is an all era concert including content from the Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins incarnations of Genesis. Tickets for the bands show at the Pemberton centre will go on sale early in the new year. Full details will be in Events On magazine in our January edition and we are excited to promote this evening in association with Jem Briton. If you cannot wait for the tickets to go on sale telephone Events On 0808 118 5813 (Free from most landlines) to pre-order.

Hi All A slightly shorter version of Soul’in Around this month, to make room for all the festive frolics. Back to normal in January’s edition, with all the reports, reviews and soul happenings that took place over the Christmas period. Plus an in depth interview with long time local Dj/ Promoter Len Dopson. Talking of Len, He has been in touch to tell us that, last months (November 16th) ‘Soul in the Bowl 2 Rooms of Soul’ Northern Soul Night held at the Bowls Club Rushden, was a real success and the busiest one yet with over 300 people from all over the country attending on the night. We did report that this was fast becoming one of the best attended nights in the U.K. So you read it hear first! Just goes to show soul is as healthy as ever in Northants. The next Soul in the Bowl is on Saturday 14th January 2014. Len tells us that this one has a ‘Cleethorpes’ connection (interesting) referring to another ‘legendary’ Soul Venue from back in the day ‘Cleethorpes Pier’ featuring original Cleethorpes Dj. Chris Dalton…but more on that next month. On to current stuff, next up is news about the Wigan Casino 40th Anniversary Night 21st December 2013 at the Pemberton Centre Rushden, unfortunately advertised ‘Wigan Dj’ Keith Minshull has had to pull out for health reasons (speedy recovery Keith). However, every cloud so the saying goes. Fortunately fellow original ‘Wigan Dj’ Brian Rae will be stepping in for him. Arguably Brian would probably be more well known to many, as not only was he one of the original’s at the Casino but also

Dj’d at many other well known clubs up and down the country. So, great news! Brian will be supported by top Local Dj’s including stalwart of the scene Glenn Bellamy. There is much to look forward to on the night, including a ‘dance competition’ free to enter and open to all, with a fantastic first prize of a pair of brand new retro Solatio dance shoes. Solatio shoes were synonymous with the Northern Soul Scene during the 1970s and ‘the weapon of choice, out on the floor’ for many dancers. Add talcum powder to the equation and they would have you slipping, sliding and spinning on the dance floor. And guess what the originated from Northants. Local shoe designer David Mole recently bought the rights to ‘Solatio’ and revived the company, and has faithfully reproduced the shoes. Dare I say, they are probably better than the original’s, having owned a few pairs back in the day and latterly a pair of David’s I can attest their quality. Don’t take my word for it though I will probably never do them justice due to my limited dance floor action, since I turned 50 this year. However the dancing cast of the soon to be released film, documenting the Northern Soul Scene, were supplied with them. They gave them a good thrashing! And gave them the thumbs up! There will be a selection of shoes available to buy on the night, however if you can’t wait until then you can visit the online store www.solatio.co.uk Runners up prizes are a batch of Northern Soul records signed by Brian Rae supplied by ‘Soul Time Records’ they are worth a look if you are tracking down your fave

Northern Soul tunes, find them on ebay under: taketimetotrade. Traders of anything Soul related are welcomed to pitch up on the night by prior arrangement. Also they are looking for anybody with ‘Wigan Casino’ memorabilia, that they would be willing to display, this would gain free entry for two. Finally reservations for this night are high as we go to press and the Pemberton Centre is strict on capacity numbers. So to ensure entry it is recommended you reserve your place in advance, you also save a quid £6 for reservations or £7. on the door on the night. However if you are leaving it to chance get there early as once capacity reached you definitely will struggle to get in. To reserve or for any other info call 07905 028003. That’s all Folk’s for now, have a Great and Soulful Christmas/ New Years See you somewhere Soulful soon…Jem Ps. Please keep any Soul news coming contact [email protected]

Soul’in Around,

Still Soul In These Old Shoes.

We ventured over to the Eastern Spice Restaurant in High Street Irthlingborough for their Thursday evening banquet. Instantly greeted by two members of staff as we walked in and showed to our table and it take long before our poppdoms arrived with a choice of 5 dips. The restaurant was quite busy with a large party in celebrating a birthday. We also found that it was a nice layout as while there is room for parties like the aforementioned, there are a number of booths for up to four people that make it a nice intimate setting if that is what you are after.

Sherree selected Kebab Tandoori Roll which takes what you would expect in a tandoori starter but with a selection of chicken and lamb in a light pastry roll. We both agreed it was very nice and a different way to present this dish. I went for Momo as my starter. It’s a nicely spiced lamb mince that comes with a chapatti type wrap that you can keep separate or as I was advised load this with the lamb filling, twist of lime and tuck in. Superb. Sherree does not like her food too spicy and thought the description of Persian Chicken on the menu, chicken tikka cooked in a blend of

aromatic spices to their chefs own recipe, looked about right for her palate, and so it was. Tender pieces of marinated chicken that oozed flavour but was not overly hot. Jinga La Jawab was my choice. King prawns, marinated & grilled then cooked with onions, green chillies, coriander & tomatoes in a thick sauce. This turned out to be a real surprise of a dish. Initially on my first taste I thought it was very nice, mild and creamy. Then along came a superb after kick of spice that really lit up my cheeks but without taking away the flavours of the prawns. We both went for a pilau rice which was very aromatic and accompanied the main dishes well. With a bottle of house red to wash it down and finished off with a couple of coffees we had what can only be described as a very nice evening in a bright vibrant atmosphere with great, friendly service. Eastern Spice have banquet evenings Thursday and Sunday evenings and also regular entertainment. See their advertisement opposite for more details.

Yeoman Of England - Quiz Night

For many years, curry has been the UK’s favourite dish. Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA) organised a spectacular awards ceremony to celebrate the diversity and success of Asian Restaurants and Takeaways that produce some of Britain’s most popular food and who have built excellent reputations amongst their local communities. The UK’s best curry houses and chefs were recently celebrated and awarded at the 8th annual BCA awards in London. The Awards are designed to recognise the excellence of the whole of the Asian dining sector, from takeaway outlets to fine-dining restaurants.

BCA is the umbrella organization of approximately 12,000 British Bangladeshi restaurateurs living in the UK. It was established in 1960 to represent the catering industry run by the ethnic Bangladeshis. The best chef of the year 2013 competition organised by the BCA which took at Hammersmith and West London college , in central London. Ultimately the winners of the awards

are decided by a curry heat competition between 40 top selected Chefs and the top 10 Chefs are selected from across 10 British regions. Mr Syed Moin Uddin from Kingsthorpe Spice Northampton attended this competition and was selected the best chef of the year 2013 on 3rd November. BCA award ceremony was held in the luxurious and glamorous setting of the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster Bridge, in Central London. It was a lively celebration combined with wonderful food and a variety of entertainment. Guests were joining hundreds of restaurateurs and

caterers under the spotlight of international TV and rubbed shoulders with VIPs, politicians, business leaders and celebrities. There was a five star superb banquet of authentic Asian food, scintillating speeches, spectacular entertainment and a nail-biting climax to the evening as the BCA Award Winners were announced with high-profile presentations by prestigious VIP guests.

Syed Moin Uddin was born in Dharkapon Moulovibazar, Sylhet, Bangladesh on 1963. He completed the intermediate and higher in Bangladesh. He came in UK in 1989 and he was keen on cooking. At this point of his life he took the important decision to seek a position as a trainee Chef in order to gain employment in his lifelong passion of cooking. He underwent three years of rigorous training under the Executive Chef. During this period

he gained knowledge and experience in three different aspects of Indian cuisine namely, Curry, Tandoor and Indian sweets. During his dedicated service and expertise he was selected as chief executive chef at Mugol Emporium in Wales where he worked around 12 years, training many chefs. In 2005 he moved in Northampton at the request of his brother Mr Mamun Ali who is the managing director of the Kingsthorpe spice. He started work at Kingsthorpe

Spice as a chief executive chef, his contribution and friendly dedicated service, building a team he made the Kingsthorpe Spice famous in Northampton. Syed Moin Uddin Chief Executive Chef of Kingsthorpe Spice said winning this prestigious award was attributed to his respected guests and valued customers who return to his takeaway time and time again introducing friends, family and business associates to what they consider is a superb fine Indian dining experience. Mr Uddin was honoured to be able to accept such an award on behalf of all his customers and extends his thanks and gratitude to them. “First of all I would like to say thank you very much indeed for our customers and local residents who support us and insisted my chef Mr Moin Uddin enter the competition for the BCA Award. Then I would like to say thank you very much and congratulation to my Chef who won the award and proved us he is the best”

Zumbathon Success A real party atmosphere was felt as the NC TLC Trust held its first exercise themed fundraiser. The Scott Bader Centre was a hive of activity on Sunday, 13th October as the NC TLC Trust held its first Zumbathon. The hall was packed as Sarah and Carolyn took to the hall’s stage to get the group of keen Zumba fans going to raise funds for the charity as they wiggled their bodies all for a good cause! People of Events on Magazine, the past couple of months have been the quietest THEMS THE BRAKES have ever been!! We have been practising hard to change our set and get loads of new material for the new year. As we come closer to the festive period, bookings start to come flying in for December and 2014. We kick off December with one of our favourite venues, The Queens Head in Higham Ferrers (Saturday 7th December). Always a fantastic night here with a great crowd!!! The owners, Steve and Heidi really have turned the place around, and always make it a very enjoyable venue to play - both enjoying a couple of drinks which also makes it good. The following week, we once again visit The Green Dragon in Higham

Ferrers, but this time it is for a fantastic cause. The 14th December is a date that will forever touch the hearts of THEMS THE BRAKES. On the 14th December 2012, a good friend of many, Mr. Matthew Pinnock unfortunately passed away after a long and heroic battle against cancer. So this year, we are celebrating his life by performing a memorial gig at The Green Dragon, which was his local. Please come and join us, and show some local and respect for this great bloke. The 21st of December, we cross towns into Rushden, and play at "The Wembley" of Rushden, The Wheatsheaf. A great venue for live music, with a cracking beer to join it. Then NYE, we will be celebrating the end of the year by performing at The Snooks Club in

Raunds. Ticket information can be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Our NYE gig will also be a special one for the members of TTB as we unfortunately say goodbye to Miss Kelly Barnes who has decided to leave the band in a bid to progress in her solo career. She is one hell of a singer, and so many good things are to come to her if she carries on the way she is going. Since joining the band over three years ago, she has been a major asset to THEMS THE BRAKES, and we are very upset to see her leaving, but we know it is for the best and we all wish her lots of love and luck for her future success. Please search for her on Facebook, and Youtube, and follow her progress. We look forward to seeing you all at some venue, at some period in the future. For booking information, please contact Dave Earl. Tel: 07581032806
