Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert

The generosity of our parish family continues to overwhelm me. Both Fr. Todd and I appreciate the many Christmas

cards that we have received, as well as the many gifts and goodies that have been sent our way.

Thank you for remembering us so generously at Christmas, and we wish everyone a blessed New Year.

I will be on vacation from January 8th through the 19th. I trust Fr. Todd will continue to keep things running smoothly

in my absence.

The Epiphany of the Lord

“When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, … behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is the

newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.’ …. And behold, the star that

they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were

overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated

themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and

myrrh.”

After they visited Jesus, the Gospel says that they returned home by another way so as to avoid King Herod. Do we

know what happened to them?

In short no, but there are many traditional

stories about what happened to the Magi.

In one account, one of the Magi is

baptized by St. Thomas on his way to

India. Another has all their remains

found by St. Helena and brought to

Constantinople, and eventually making

their way to Germany and the Shrine of

the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral.

The journey of the Magi represents the

call for all humanity to go to the Savior.

Most likely at that time, many saw the

star in the sky. However, only a few

made the journey. So also today, the

light of Christ shines for all. Some see

and don’t understand; some look away;

others are drawn to the light.

Consider your own journey.

Greetings in Christ,

Happy New Year!!!

Thoughts on New Year’s resolutions….

For me, while growing, up a New Year’s

resolution was always a second chance; a

second chance to complete my Lenten

Fast. Eventually, my New Year’s

resolution would go off the rails too; then

Lent was back again!

Be Peace…

JANUARY CALENDAR

Life Teen: Sunday, 7:00-9:00pm

7th, 14th, 21st, 28th

Edge: Wednesday, 6:30pm-8:00pm

3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st

This month is the big build-up

to our Sacramental Preparation

students’ first Confessions

which will take place January

29 and 30th. Please keep these children in your prayers in the

next few weeks. And, perhaps even more important - please

remember their parents, as well. In my experience many young

adults may fall away from regular participation in this Sacrament

and now, as they work with their children, realize that they have

some adjustments to make in order to lead their children with

integrity.

ARE YOU A BACKSLIDER? It can certainly happen that we

far too easily “backslide”….and fall away from practices of the

faith. Frankly, I like that word “backslide” (though it is typically

used by Protestants) - the image is so apt! It seems soooo easy to

slide down and away from something that is good for us, while it

takes extra effort to get back on track. Pray that all parents,

especially those leading their children towards the Sacrament of

Reconciliation, are drawn to reclaim this Sacrament for

themselves, even though it may take a little persistent effort.

Parents frequently tell me that after they made their first

confession, they never really grew in understanding or depth of

participation. Perhaps they didn’t go frequently enough, or were

never encouraged to do a more extensive Examination of

Conscience, or prayerful preparation.

THIS SACRAMENT IS FAR MORE VALUABLE FOR

ADULTS THAN IT IS FOR CHILDREN! Don’t blame

yourself, but do know that it is well worthwhile to recommit

yourself to regular Confession. One great, and easy way to update

yourself is to watch the series Forgiven on FORMED. If you

have a commute, you might consider streaming it and listening to

it as you drive; the visuals are well done, but not critical.

Likewise, I often listen to FORMED programs while doing

housework.

You can access all the amazing programs on FORMED, by going

to FORMED.org and entering our parish code: JHQBXP

Magi among Us

Several days before Christmas, I received a

phone call from a parishioner asking if there

was a family we knew of that might be in need

of some help this Christmas. A family from

our parish immediately came to mind. This

faith filled young family has been dealing with

critical health issues and all that comes with it,

for the past year. With young kids and

Christmas a week away, they would be greatly

blessed by this unexpected gift.

With great love, the benefactors of this gift

placed a large amount of money in a card

which was hand delivered to the young

family's home.

In today's gospel, when the Magi saw Jesus,

they 'opened their treasures and offered him

gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh' - and

this is just what happened here as treasures

were opened and given to the Christ Child here

in Fenton this Christmas.

Thank you, Gerry and Kay Willey for your

open hearts that have blessed so many.

"

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was

thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and

you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me,

ill and you cared for me, in prison and you

visited me." Jesus (Matthew 25:35)

“Babies bring us down to earth by their sheer

fragility and neediness; but they also invite a

more transcendent perspec ve as we humbly

acknowledge that something so good could not

be made by us alone. Today we celebrate the

Solemnity of the Epiphany, a ‘Second Christmas’

as it were, for today the Christmas Babe is first

seen and acknowledged by the kings of the earth

as one of them and much more!”

Our world is rapidly evolving, constantly connected and full of pressure from all

direc ons. It is difficult to know how to give our children the support to become hard

working, confident and successful adults. Raising “happy” kids is the goal of every

parent, yet there is no manual on how best to do so.

Tools For Your Child’s Tool Belt will give you strategies to help insulate your child from

the pressure they will face and give them the opportunity to thrive in whatever they

choose to do in life.

Happy New Year! With the Holiday week there was a delay in some of the projects so our staff and contractors could enjoy time with their loved ones. Due to the frigid temperatures the concrete work at the rectory had to be put on hold. Once the temperature rises above freezing, they will return to working on the stone work behind the rectory. I am anxious to see all the improvements the new year will bring to the parish. Please contact me with any questions, or if you would like to donate to any projects at the parish.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

Infertility is a symptom of underlying disease. The diseases that cause infertility have a “two-pronged” effect. They not only hinder the functioning of fertility, but they also cause both short and long-term health problems. Methods covered in NFP classes can lead to help in achieving, as well as postponing, pregnancy. www.naprotechnology.com/infertility.htm

The Creighton Model FertilityCare System of NFP was expanded into a field called NaProTECHNOLOGY. This technology helps specially trained doctors pin-point the underlying causes of the infertility. Infertility treatments using NaPro are successful 40 to 80% of the time; which is more effective than IVF. Dol website (FAQs)

Until 1978, most of the effort in medicine in evaluating and treating women with infertility was placed in trying to identify and treat the underlying causes. However, in 1978, IVF (in vitro fertilization) produced a paradigm shift. It led to “skipping over” the causes, which continues to the present time. In essence, this led to a Band-Aid approach to treatment, not one that gets to the root causes.

Human Trafficking Awareness Day started in 2007, when the U.S. Senate designated January 11th as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the hopes of raising awareness to combat human trafficking. It began as a U.S. initiative, and the United Nations has started to highlight this topic and work towards global awareness with days such as International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Human Trafficking Awareness Day is dedicated to raising awareness of sexual slavery and human trafficking worldwide. Today, more than at any time in human history, there are millions of people enslaved in the world. Every day, modern slavery can be recognized: children become soldiers, young women are forced into prostitution and migrant workers are exploited in the workforce. Human Trafficking Awareness Day seeks to end this slavery, return rights to individuals and make the world a safer place for all inhabitants.

On February 8th, we celebrate the Feast of St. Josephine, the patron saint of victims of trafficking. Please pray daily between January 11th and February 8th to end all forms of human trafficking.

“GOD SAID” - THE POWER OF GOD'S PROPHETIC WORD

Throughout Scripture, we see how God's word has the power to enable what He u ers; when He said, "Be s ll." the waves obeyed. When He said, "Let there be light." there was light. So, when God says to us, "Be healed" or "Peace." --- grace and power explode on our lives. “God Said” Men’s Retreat January 12-14, 2018, at the Maryville Retreat Center, Holly is hosted by Holy Redeemer Men’s and Women’s Retreat team.
