Attention Snowbirds! If you are leaving for all or part

of the winter months, please review this checklist of things to do before you depart. Following these guidelines will be a big help in avoiding problems that can arise in your absence. Thanks, Brian Petrucci, Southport General Manager

1) Contact Sharon Murphy in the Village Center Office or Michelle Deutschmann in the Management Office so they can record:

• Your seasonal address and telephone number

• The start and end dates of your absence from South-port

• The name and contact information of the person who is monitoring your unit

2) Please leave a key to your unit with Michelle Deutschmann and sign the Emergency Entry Permission Form. Your key will be stored in a locked box in the Management Office. 3) Replace the batteries in your thermostat and set the thermostat on "HOLD" at 55 degrees or higher. NOTE: If the battery dies while you're away, the heat will shut off. Not all thermostats are battery operated; we recommend you contact an HVAC contractor if you are unsure about yours. The contractor can also advise you about proper mainte-nance of your heating system. For "No Heat" calls coming from Phase III units, we ask residents to check their heater for an outlet with a GFI "test" breaker that might have tripped. Push the "reset" button. 4) Turn off the main water supply to your unit using the shut-off valve inside your unit, on house side of the meter. The other valve is an emergency valve for use by the water company. If you do not turn off the main water supply, please turn off water supply to the washing machine. 5) Close water shutoff valves to outside spigots; open faucets to drain remaining water. 6) Turn off water heater using the switch on the motor (if there is one) or by rotating the gas control to the "pilot" or "vacation" or “off “setting. 7) Make sure batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have been refreshed. We recommend changing batteries every six months, but no less than once a year. 8) Lock all windows and doors. 9) Have mail held or forwarded by US Postal Service. 10) Cancel any newspaper delivery. 11) If you use your alarm system, set it when you leave. 12) IMPORTANT! Do not turn off your phone service; it is connected to the alarm system. If you shut your service off, the Association will turn it back on at your expense, plus a $100 fine.
