1. OPTA FACTS

• Australia have won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup more often than any other side

(five times); they’ve lifted the trophy in four of the last five tournaments.

• Zimbabwe failed to qualify for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019; ending a run of nine

straight appearances in the tournament.

• England and New Zealand have appeared in the most ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup

tournaments without winning it; both featuring in 11 previous editions, England finishing

as runners-up on three occasions (1979, 1987 and 1992) whilst the Black Caps have

come second once before (2015).

• England are hosting an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup tournament for the first time in 20

years; they crashed out of ICC Cricket World Cup 1999, at the group stage.

• Five different sides have managed to win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup – Australia

(1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 & 2015), India (1983 & 2011), West Indies (1975 & 1979), Pakistan

(1992) and Sri Lanka (1996); all five of those teams are set to feature at the ICC Men’s

Cricket World Cup 2019.

• The two qualifier places for this tournament were secured last year in Zimbabwe by

Afghanistan and the West Indies; Ireland, Scotland, United Arab Emirates and

Zimbabwe all featured in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 but will not appear in the

2019 edition.

• Hosts England have won 71% (58/82) of their completed ODIs since ICC Cricket World

Cup 2015, the best rate of any side.

• Mitchell Starc (Australia) won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ accolade at ICC Cricket

World Cup 2015; no bowler picked up more wickets across that competition (22 – level

with Trent Boult), doing so at an average of just 10.2.

• Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) registered four centuries in his seven knocks at ICC

Cricket World Cup 2015, twice as many as any other batsman; New Zealand’s Martin

Guptill (547) was the highest scorer at that tournament however.

• Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien recorded the fastest ever century in an ICC Cricket World Cup

game; getting to his hundred in just 50 balls versus England in 2011.
