Getting Started Thank you for celebrating the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID book series with this event pack. The ninth book in the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID series is called The Long Haul and will publish in the UK on 5th November 2014. We know you’ll have lots of excited young readers who can’t wait to read it, but in the meantime this event pack includes suggestions for games that will help keep them entertained in the build-up to publication! You can pick and choose which of these activities will work best for the size and age range of your group and, with a mix of solo creative tasks and some noise-raising team games, you can put them in any order you like. There are also a number of activity sheets at the back of this guide that can be reproduced and distributed for fans to have fun with right away or to take home and enjoy later. Now Puffi n has teamed up with www.holidaycottages.co.uk to provide you with even more fun activity sheets. www.holidaycottages.co.uk are a self-catering lettings agency with over 2,000 cottages throughout the UK, so why not have a browse and head off on your own family road trip?
Some other ideas to enhance your ROAD TRIP Event:Play dress-up. Encourage fans to come dressed as Greg or any other Wimpy Kid character. Or have them come dressed in head-to-toe orange to match the cover of The Long Haul. Arrange a costume parade through your school, library or bookshop.Get drawing. Set aside some drawing time and create a “gallery” with the fi nished works. Ask fans to draw their favourite moments from the books, come up with their own Wimpy Kid stories, or invent entirely new characters. They could also create their own book cover design using the activity-sheet template at the back of this pack. The goal is to showcase their creativity. Serve Wimpy Kid–themed snacks. Serve M&M’s® or Skittles® that match the colours of all of the books, decorate a cake or cupcakes to look like Greg’s head, or run an orange-only event with orange juice, Jaffa cakes and cheesy crisps! There are millions of ways to have fun Wimpy Kid–style and we hope this pack will help you create an event that’s fun for everyone — whether the size of your group is four or forty. Thank you again and have a great time!
Thank you for celebrating the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID book series with this event pack.

The SECRET Word Game Setting Up:This game can be played in a group of up to eight players. If you have a large group, select random people from the audience to participate and bring them to the front of the room. If you have a small group, everyone can play. First, cut out the cards on the next three pages. Then divide the participants into two teams and hand out a stack of cards to each team. Someone will need to take the role of Moderator for this game.
How to Play: 1. One team is selected to go fi rst. A player from that team is designated as the fi rst Reader.
2. The Reader’s job is to convey the “secret word” at the top of the card in a way that will allow his or her teammates to guess what the secret word is.
3. The trick is that the Reader is not allowed to use any of the forbidden words printed on the card. The Moderator must look over the Reader’s shoulder to make sure he or she doesn’t say any of the forbidden words.
4. If the Reader says a forbidden word, he or she loses a point and must move on to the next card.
5. The Reader has one minute to convey as many secret words as possible. Once the minute is up, the Reader’s score is tallied and the points go to the Reader’s team. Then the next team gets a turn using their stack of cards.
6. A new Reader is picked every time a team has a new turn. The game ends when everyone has had a chance to go or when the cards run out, and the team with the highest number of points wins.
7. If this game is played in front of a large group, it would be best for the Moderator to write the secret word on an easel that everyone in the audience can see, so as to make it more fun for the audience.

The Country Game
Alphabet Packing
Setting Up:This game can be played in a group of any size.
How to Play: 1. One player is selected to go fi rst and they have to name a country. The next player will then have to name a
place that starts with the last letter of the fi rst country. For example: player one says Greece, player two says Egypt, player three says Turkey and so on . . .
2. If a player takes longer than 10 seconds to think of a country name they will be eliminated. The game will continue until a player can’t think of a country. The last person to name a country is the champion. This can also be played in teams to speed it up.
Setting Up:The aim of this game is to decide what to pack to take on holiday from player to player, going right through the alphabet.
How to Play: 1. Playerone thinks of an item to pack beginning with an A and says, for example: ‘I went on holiday and I packed
an Armband’. The second player carries the tale on by naming an object beginning with B: ‘I went on holiday and I packed an Armband and a Bucket.’ On it goes: ‘I went on holiday and I packed an Armband, a Bucket and a Camera’ . . . until (if you’re all clever enough) you get to Z.
2. Each item must have something to do with holidays, packing or travelling. Any player who fails to think of a suitable object within a short time-limit (say, fi ve seconds) must drop out.

SQUARESA fun paper-and-pencil game useful for rainy days, travelling or just for spare moments when you want to play a good puzzle game.
How to play:1. This is a two-player game. Each player will need a pencil.2. The aim of the game is to make as many squares as you can, while trying to stop the other player
from making their own squares.3. Using the grids below (you can start with ‘easy’ and work your way up to ‘hard’) player one makes a line joining two
dots. Then player two makes a line joining two dots, and so on.4. For a while it is easy, but soon there aren’t as many dots spare, and you need to plan carefully to stop the other
player from forming squares.5. If you complete a square you can take another turn straight away. You might be able to make even more squares
this way.6. If you can’t make any more squares add another line somewhere else and it’s the next player’s turn.7. Add your initials into every square you complete so it’s easy to count the score at the end. The player who has the
most squares at the end of the game is the winner!
