Welcome to Taupo and the 2017 Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge!

Each year, the team at the Cycle Challenge Trust work tirelessly to bring this world class event to fruition in our equally world class location, here in the heart of the North Island.

Many hundreds of local people volunteer to fill the essential roles in running this event, to make it memorable for participants, supporters and our local community.

The event contributes a great deal to the Taupo and surrounding community and this would not be possible without you, entering the event and coming to spend time in Taupo.

So, thank you for entering this year’s event, whether it be your first or twenty first! Enjoy our town and surrounds, take some time to kick back and most importantly go well round the Great Lake Taupo.

DEBORAH MCCARTHY President Lake Taupo Rotary

Greetings to you all, cyclists, mountain-bikers, friends and families alike. To those of you that see the annual Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge as that comfy, well-worn old jersey that gets donned on the last Saturday in November each year, welcome back. And to those of you that are new to the event and/or new to this wonderful place, a special welcome to you.

Here we are about to embark on the 41st running of this truly iconic event, and we are stoked to be back! This year has been about incremental improvement, our key focus has been around trying to really drill down and understand how we can deliver a better experience for you, the people that enable NZ’s largest cycle/MTB event to happen. We know you are busy people with lots of choice in how to spend your precious money and leisure time, and we do not take it lightly that you’ve chosen us, thank-you.

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge supports around 40 local organisations who work on the event, in the lead-up and on event day, and earn around $100k in donations between them. All event surpluses are then injected back into the local economy to support worthy organisations via Rotary, who own the event. This charitable purpose is the key driver of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, and that gives us all enormous satisfaction.

Have a wonderful time in the stunning Taupo region, enjoy your time on and off the bike. Be safe, and be courteous and kind to each other – the world needs more kindness.

AARON CARTER Event Director

EVENT DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is one of NZ’s biggest active sport participation events held annually. It is put on by locals and the communities of Taupo for the rest of the country to enjoy. This event allows us locals to annually showcase the beautiful and unique Taupo region to a wide variety of people from around NZ, and abroad. For many, the Cycle Challenge is like that favourite jersey or t-shirt that gets worn on the last Saturday of November each and every year.

This event is managed by a small team of proud locals who feel honoured and privileged to be involved with such an iconic, large-scale, and world-class event. The Cycle Challenge has developed over four decades, it has grown from being a grass roots event to being one of New Zealand’s iconic sporting events. The people behind it are genuinely proud of what it has become and are committed to taking it into the future.

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge generates the largest economic impact of any event of its type in the Taupo region, and, as it is owned by

a Charitable Trust and governed by a Rotary-appointed Board, all surpluses from the event are injected back into the community, making a huge difference to a number of worthy groups and organisations. The event team and the many key contributors and stakeholders, are proud to be involved with an event that makes a real difference and connects a community.

Our team is committed to incremental improvement, we are motivated to create an event for all. We want the Cycle Challenge to be known as an event that puts the participant at the forefront of everything we do - the peoples’ choice event that offers something for everyone. Bring the family, the friends, the hangers-on, there is something at the Cycle Challenge for everyone, from the absolute beginner to the elite athlete.

Our aspirations for the future, and the ways in which we would like people to perceive the event are that is it Innovative, Aspirational, and Inclusive, and quite simply the best event of its kind in NZ.

FROM A GRASS ROOTS EVENT TO ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S ICONIC SPORTING EVENTS.

vehicles following riders have caused an unacceptable and significant hazard

to event cyclists. Those who persist in doing so display a selfish disregard

for the safety of all competitors and other road users. Police and the event

organisers ask for your co-operation and strongly urge you NOT to drive

the course during this year’s event. Police will be strictly enforcing all

road rules on motorists sharing the course with cyclists.”

OFFICIAL EVENT STAFF Always pay attention to and act upon instructions given by course marshals, traffic management professionals and police.

COURSE INFORMATIONAll road surfaces are sealed, are of a good national standard and the entire course is well sign-posted and marshalled.

Please refer to the Course Map on page 18

For much of State Highway One between Turangi and Hatepe Hill Transit NZ has placed “rumble strips” on the left shoulder and in the centre of the road. You are advised to be particularly careful in this section of the course.

Note that the Holden Mens Classic and Bike Barn Round the Lake (road) course varies from the Start group 9 and Enduro course in the northerly section.

WHAT YOU NEED ON THE COURSE• Spare tubes• Tools• Pump• Tyre levers• Puncture repair kit• Drink bottle• Food• Sunscreen• Warm clothingSUNSMART Don’t Let the Sun Get Under Your Skin. Sunscreen is available at some support stations and the Kuratau and Motuoapa start points.

COURSE SERVICES• St John Ambulance• Support Vans – you are responsible

for your own repair of punctures and mechanical issues. Support vans are provided but may not be immediately available.

• All Support Stations have water.

• Nuun sports replacement drink is also available at the support stations on the second half of the course, the finish line, the Kuratau and Motuoapa Start points and the Huka MTB support station at The Hub.

• Portaloos and bike racks at the Kuratau and Motuoapa start points.

• Rubbish bins at support stations and 3 designated rubbish drop zones around the course.

• Mechanics are available at the start line in Taupo and at Kuratau and Moutuoapa start points. The mechanics only carry limited spares – eg. spokes and wheels are not carried. You will be charged for any parts you use.

• Portaloos are located at drink stations and at the Half the Lake and Bookabach Quarter Lake start points.

FOOD TO PURCHASE• Ordered lunches will be available from

the water stop before Kuratau for the Bike Barn Round the Lake riders and Motuapa bookabach Quarter Lake start for the Half the Lake and bookabach Quarter Lake riders.

• First food available for purchase in Turangi.

CUT OFF TIMES• Management reserves the right to

remove riders from both the road and MTB course if it’s apparent they will not complete the event by 7pm or it’s deemed the safety of themselves or others could be compromised.

• Bike Barn Round the Lake – If you think you will take longer than 8:30 hours please choose start group 9.

DNF – IMPORTANT• If you do not complete your challenge

please report to the DNF desk in the Information Marquee to have this recorded on the day or phone Event Comms at 021 054 1864.

EVENT ETIQUETTE & TIPSAT THE START Seed yourself in a start group based on your current ability. You are risking injury to yourself and others if you confuse ambition with ability and ride in a pack too quick for you.

HELMETS Helmets must be worn at all times and fastened securely while cycling.

OVERLAPPING Don’t overlap wheels. Stay behind the rider in front of you, or move up beside them.

STAY TO THE LEFT Do not cross the centre line. Always stay as far left as practicable.

KEEP YOUR LINE Maintain a straight line. Practise taking the water bottle out of its cage and food out of your back pockets before the event. In a bunch wobbling is dodgy. Minimise looking behind you – often it causes you to veer from a straight line.

ANTICIPATE Sudden movements create problems for riders around you. Keep an eye on developments ahead of you. Don’t always look down at the rider in front of you, but use their back as your target while regularly glancing 3-5 riders ahead, and also up the road to see problems before they occur.

RELAX Keep your upper body relaxed & loose. Any bumps on the road will be absorbed. Hitting a pothole with rigid arms, could cause an accident.

CLIMBING When moving from a seated position to a standing position, put extra pressure on the pedals so that your bike doesn’t “stall”.

SIGNAL HAZARDS If you see a hazard which would affect the line or momentum of the bunch it is your responsibility

to signal to following riders, with subsequent riders continuing the signal further down the group.

PASSING Pass on the right, not the left.

INDICATE YOUR INTENTIONS This lets riders around you know what you are doing.

SPEAK UP If you are passing a rider in front of you say loudly “ON YOUR RIGHT”. If you are being passed you must keep your line.

NO AEROBARS Aerobars do not belong in bunch rides. They are dangerous and do not allow the rider to easily access their brakes.

LONG DOWN HILLS (Waihi Hill especially) Don’t stay on your brakes. It’s safest to “feather brake” - which means, tap the brakes applying intermittent pressure. This is wise in wet weather too. If you need to slow for a corner, do the braking BEFORE the corner and release the brakes as you turn. Touching your brakes in a turn will make your bike go straight.

HIGH SPEED BRAKING Use the back brake more than the front (about 60%-40%). Slide your weight back on the seat. Avoid locking up the wheels.

EASY ON THE BRAKES Don’t jam your brakes on suddenly - stay alert for hazards ahead and brake with control.

STOPPING If you have to stop, clearly signal your intention and get clearly off the road (always on the left).

CLOTHING Wear brightly coloured clothing appropriate for the weather conditions. Invest in appropriate clothing. A warm and comfortable rider is a safer rider.

ROAD RULES Always obey the road rules of New Zealand, including the Give Way and Stop Signs on course.

• Don’t just cycle – ride and re-cycle.• If you would like to recycle your

event bag these can be left at the information marquee.

roundabout to Ruapehu St for Start Group Assembly.

• Huka MTB starts assemble on the grass area next to the Road Bike starts. See Event Village Map for exact position

• We suggest you cycle to the start line• If approaching the start line from

the North (Acacia Bay, Nukuhau, Rangatira Park) cyclists must exit road at the Control Gates Bridge and use footpaths/tracks to access the start. This is a safety measure to avoid tangling with other starting cyclists being released.

AFTER YOU FINISH• A secure Bike Park is available for you

to store your bike while in the Event Village. Please refer to Event Village Map on page 16 - 17.
