Kate Wohlman - Music Director and Conductor�Born and raised in the UK Kate began performing at an early�
age on piano, voice and trumpet. She�gained a scholarship to study tuba at�Wells Cathedral School for her high�school years, where she was a concerto�soloist, regional finalist of the BBC�Young Musician of the Year competi-�tion, and toured with the National�Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain.�
While living in Manchester (UK) Kate�performed with a number of local brass bands and orchestras,�and studied tuba with James Gourlay, Ewan Easton and Brian�Kingsley. She holds undergraduate degrees from Manchester�University and the Royal Northern College of Music, along�with a Masters in Tuba Performance and a Masters in Music�Theory from Penn State University, where she studied with�Velvet Brown. She was winner of the 2009 PSU Wind Ensem-�ble Concerto Competition.�
Kate is currently a final year Doctor of Musical Arts candidate�at the University of Iowa. She studies tuba with John Manning,�conducting with Richard Mark Heidel, is a brass area Graduate�Teaching Assistant and recipient of the prestigious Iowa Perfor-�mance Fellowship. Kate currently conducts the New Horizons�Brass Ensemble, the University of Iowa’s Collegium Tubum�ensemble, and has been Musical Director of the Eastern Iowa�Brass Band since August 2011. Kate also serves on the North�American Brass Band Association Board of Directors and is a�member of the Athena Brass Band.�

The Eastern Iowa Brass�Band is pleased to have con-�ducted the second annual�Young Artist Competition.�Young people, ages 15 to 25,�are eligible to participated in�the contest to compete for a�scholarship award and the�opportunity to perform their�winning solo work in concert�with EIBB. The competition�finals were held on February�17, 2013. The panel of judges included:�Dallas Niermeyer� – Prairie Brass Band, conductor�Amy Nelson� – Chicago Brass Band, cornet soloist, current Smith-�Watkins and Dennis Wick artist�Casey Thomas� – former EIBB director and current owner of Solid�Brass Music Company�

All of the young musicians demonstrated tremendous maturity and�musicality in their audition performances. The dedication and�preparation displayed by these musicians is to be commended.�One of our judges noted, “Congratulations on getting such talented�entrants for your contest!”�
Jessen Smith�
Jessen has been selected as the�high school division winner. He is�a 12th grade trumpet/flugelhorn�player at Clear Creek Amana High�School. His winning audition on�Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Adagio from�Conceierto De Aranjuez” will be�featured in the bands subscription�series concert on April 27th. In�addition to a featured solo perfor-�
mance with the band, Jessen will receive a $250 music scholarship�from the EIBB.�
Will Emrich�
Will has been selected as the col-�legiate division winner. Will is a�freshman euphonium player at-�tending the University of Iowa.�His winning audition on James�Curnow’s “Rhapsody for Eupho-�nium” will be featured in the�bands subscription series concert�on April 27th. In addition to a�featured performance with the�
band, Will will receive a $350 music scholarship from the EIBB.�
