Ursula Hermancinski, Auctioneer“…truly an exceptional auctioneer.”

– Robert Mondavi

ursula has been standing at a podium from the very start of her career at christie's in new York. ursula worked as a furniture and decorations generalist until christie’s called upon her to actualize her passion for the grape. in the mid-1990's ursula established christie's new York wine department along with their original auction partner Zachys, the Scarsdale (NY) fine wine mega-retailer. The Zachys-christie’s new York wine auctions set new standards for the American wine auction market. ursula eventually left christie's and jumped into

the high adventures of the dot.com arena. Her pioneering interest in online wine auctions prompted Wine Spectator to profile Ursula in its article "The Changing Face of Auctions."

Ursula has been invited to work most of the country's top ten benefit wine auctions. She became the first woman to take the rostrum at the world famous napa valley Wine Auction and continues to appear annually. in June 2013, ursula worked the stage to hammer down the largest napa valley Wine Auction total to date: $16.9 million - the country's largest benefit wine auction total in history. ursula works personally with record-holding baseball player rusty staub, presiding each year over his foundation’s and the country’s fourth largest wine auction. ursula has also joined forces with celebrity chef emeril Lagasse, Michael J. Fox, Heather Locklear and teri Hatcher.

in addition to banging a gavel, ursula has spoken at a number of wine conferences and symposia, including the Aspen Food & Wine Festival, the international Pinot noir celebration and the American institute of Wine and Food national convention. she has also been featured on cnn’s Marketplace and is a frequent guest on various radio shows dealing with wine and its investment potential. Ursula has been profiled in Wine Spectator, Decanter, Wine & spirits, Drinks, town & country, and glamour magazines. Along with the wine world’s most influential figures in the international wine scene, Ursula is included in Ann B. Matasar’s, Women of Wine (university of california Press), and Vanity Fair magazine included her as a definition in their 2005 Wine Snob’s Dictionary.

ursula is the author of the Wine Lovers guide to Auctions: the Art & science of Buying and selling Wine (square one Publishers).

A Toast to David Reynolds, Auctioneer

David Reynolds was the first voice for Wine for Wildlife. With his inimitable cadence and British accent, he cajoled, tantalized and encouraged us to open our hearts and wallets. Attendees and bidders were introduced to rare and exciting wines, Zoo exclusives, and an unforgettable evening that has become one of the Zoo’s most anticipated events and one of the most valuable to endangered species and habitats worldwide. In five short years, Wine for Wildlife has raised nearly $500,000 which directly supports the Zoo’s conservation efforts around the globe.

sadly, last December, David was abruptly taken from us. He was in London with his mum when he suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack. tonight we honor his memory. We remember the good that he was able to achieve for our Zoo and for wildlife around the globe. We remember his laughing admonition, “no spousal restraint during bidding.” We remember his signature “Fund a need” lot that allowed the Zoo to earmark funds for specific goals. But most of all, we remember his belief that we are all philanthropists at heart and only need to activate our better natures. tonight, we raise a glass for the person and personality who made us believe and made us give so generously in support of Wine for Wildlife.

“He turns the auction tent into a revival meeting with his evangelical zeal. It is an amazing performance...he is my dream auctioneer.”

– Anthony Dias Blue, Bon Appétit Magazine

Fund-A-Need Benefits the International Rhino Foundation

We didn’t think rhino poaching could get much worse. But it has. Poachers are killing at least three African rhinos per day. the international rhino Foundation’s operation stoP PoAcHing noW raises much-needed funds to help turn the tide of rhino killing in the southern African countries hardest hit by the recent poaching surge.

the funds raised from operation stoP PoAcHing noW are used to meet a variety of needs for these populations and their protectors including:

Field Trauma Training: in remote reserves, field rangers need advanced battlefield medicine training and trauma kits so that rangers injured in armed encounters with poachers can receive immediate medical attention before evacuation to the hospital.

Tracker Dogs: getting onto poachers’ trails before they get ‘cold’ is essential. For this, tracker dogs really are man’s (and rhinos') best friend. the international rhino Foundation provides trained dogs to selected areas where they can amplify rangers’ ability to quickly find and apprehend poachers.

Scene of Crime Training: to collect evidence that will hold up in court, anti-poaching units need training in crime scene processing including foot- and finger-print lifting, DNA collection, and other skills.

Community Informants: one of the best ways to head off poaching incidents is to engage local informants. irF provides incentives for local community members who, often at great personal risk, provide information that leads to successful arrests of poachers.

Basic Equipment: in some areas, rangers do not even have basic equipment such as binoculars, radios, GPS, cameras, flashlights, tents, night vision devices and other components of a basic field ‘kit’, that are essential to do their job.

the international rhino Foundation has won rhino poaching wars before. But today’s poachers are well-equipped, sophisticated and dangerous beyond belief. After the rhino wars of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when thousands of rhinos were lost, conservationists got poaching under control. Because many poachers are based in Mozambique, where the government turns a blind eye, they are getting away with murder.

every gift, no matter what the amount, matters. every gift allows us to do more.

Naming Rights of a Bonobo Donated by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

the bonobo is the smallest of the great apes and is our closest living relative; in fact people and bonobos share more than 98% of the same dna. the bonobos’ closest living relative is the chimpanzee, but their social structures are very different.

Bonobos live in large multi-male, multi-female groups whereas chimpanzees live in small groups of related family members.

Bonobo society is female centric meaning that the females hold the power. the sons stay with their mothers for life and the daughters move to new groups.

the hallmark of bonobo behavior is their use of sex to keep the peace. When chimpanzees fight, they often kill each other. When bonobos fight, they “kiss and make up.” make love, not war!

Lady, wild born and one of the Zoo’s first four bonobos which arrived in 1990, is pregnant with her fourth baby due in mid/late spring. This baby will be the 15th bonobo born at the Columbus Zoo, one of only seven (7) zoos in this country to care for bonobos. and this baby could live more than 60 years!

Bonobos were the last of the great apes to be discovered and live in only one country in africa – the democratic Republic of Congo. the number of bonobos in the wild is dwindling and the major threats include habitat destruction because of logging and agricultural expansion, hunting, and disease.

this is your opportunity to name one of the Zoo’s soon-to-be-born additions; a perfect way to make a deeper connection with the wild.

the winning bidder understands and agrees to the following restrictions:

the Columbus Zoo and aquarium must agree to the name for appropriateness.

the Columbus Zoo and aquarium may have to send the designated bonobo to another facility as part of the species survival plan (ssp) and/or to optimize the welfare of this species’ population.

there can be no reselling of the naming rights to another person or entity.

You will be contacted by a representative from the Columbus Zoo and aquarium philanthropy department when the birth occurs for which this naming opportunitycan be applied.

WHAT? THERE'S A CHEETAH AT YOUR HOUSE?Donated by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

the world's fastest land mammal, with acceleration that would leave most automobiles in the dust, a cheetah can go from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only three seconds. Most wild cheetahs are found in eastern and southwestern Africa, so you are sure to be the talk of your neighborhood when one of the Zoo’s cheetahs graces your yard!

cheetahs use exceptionally keen eyesight to scan their grassland environment for signs of prey—especially antelope and hares. this big cat is a daylight hunter that benefits from stealthy movement and a distinctive spotted coat that allows it to blend easily into high, dry grasses. Perhaps only 7,000 to 10,000 of these big cats remain, and those are under pressure as the wide-open grasslands they favor are disappearing at the hands of human settlers.

Win this lot, and we'll bring a cheetah to your home. our animal experts will share with you facts about this amazing cat during the 30-40 minute visit.

Offer expires May 31, 2015. The visit must be reserved at least one month in advance and the location must be within 50 miles of Columbus, Ohio.
