Evelyn Ann Qakaq Sara, also known as Nevikaq
and Mom Mo, was born on May 15, 1967 in
Bethel, Alaska. She was the last child born to
James and Annie Willie of Napakiak, making her
their baby of the family. Evelyn was raised in
her home village of Napakiak where she
attended school until her graduation in May of
1988. After high school, she became a mother
to her beautiful children and, throughout her
struggles, she remained tough as nails to
support her family. On March 16, 2007, Evelyn
married her husband Morten Sara during a
home ceremony in Anchorage, Alaska. They
then resided back in Bethel and she started
working at YK Malone Home where she
received employee of the month in her
department a number of times. She was an
exemplary worker during her time with YK and
was very attentive and loving towards her
clients.
Evelyn loved the subsistence life. During the
summer months, she enjoyed going to fish
camp with her husband and children and was
an avid berry picker. She always tended to her
fish and meats and was ever so thankful to God
and anyone who supplied her with subsistence
goods. Evelyn also was an amazing and hard-
working wife and mother at home, making sure
her family had food and her house was always
spick and span and laundry folded and put
away. She was an amazing cook and her family
had pronounced her the best fry bread maker.
On her free time, she also enjoyed listening to
gospel music, going to bingo, and spending time
with her family.
Evelyn loved all her children dearly and even
treated her sisters childrenas her own. Like her
dad, she always had her house open to family
and friends, whether it was for the night or just
a visit, she happily welcomed them in and
enjoyed teasing or just having daily
conversations. Anyone who knew her, more
than likely had an inqeq from her, being the
wonderful mother she was, she always babied
everyone, especially her children.
During the fall of 2013, Evelyn was diagnosed
with Stills Disease. Although she was sickly, she

tried her best to stay strong for her family. They
considered her one of the strongest people they
knew. She instilled in her family to love one
another, to not have hatred and to always
forgive. After 8 months of fighting her sickness,
God had called her home. Her open heart, jolly
and soft voice, and all of our precious memories
together will forever be in our hearts. Evelyn,
Mom Mo, Qakaq; ourbeloved wife, mom,
grandma, daughter, sister, aunt and friend; your
love, your kindness, your strength and
resiliency, and your beautiful soul will never be
forgotten. As much as it pains us to say
goodbye, you are no longer suffering and finally
reunited with your passed loved ones. Until we
meet again on that beautiful shore.
