What is Running Start? The Running Start program provides academically motivated junior or senior high school students an opportunity to take college courses as part of their high school education.

How does the program work?Students are eligible for full or part time status. Students select their courses with the help of their high school counselor and/or their college advisor. Certain courses satisfy high school graduation requirements and can count toward a college degree. It is possible to graduate from high school and earn an Associate’s Degree at the same time!

How does Running Start help me advance my college education? All Washington state colleges and universities generally accept college-level academic courses from a community college toward a bachelor’s degree; vocational courses may be limited, depending upon a student’s major. Community colleges also offer designated transfer associate degrees designed to be fully transferable to universities; at Everett Community College we call this a DirectTransferAgreement(DTA).

Many Running Start students have one year of college completed – and sometimes two years – at the same time they earn their high school diploma. These students have already satisfied many of their General Education Requirements when they transfer to universities.
