Evaluation

Question Five-How did you attract/address your

audience?

Page 2: Evaluation question five

I felt the best way to attract/address my audience, was through adapting the

traditional and typical connotations of a magazine.

Hip-Hop I I I I I I I I I 9

Country I I 2

Indie I I I I I I I I 8

The results show ‘Hip-Hop’ to be the most favourite genre of music. However I feel that I am going to go with the genre of ‘indie’ as I have a lot more personal knowledge on that particular genre, in contrast to hip-hop and would therefore be able to portray that better across the magazine.

The results show that the main content that readers want to find, are interviews facts and information. Therefore I will include interviews with artists and a high quantity of facts and information on different artists, gigs and the current chart lists

I conducted a questionnaire. The questionnaire was placed on a range of people from my target audience, so that I could see what appealed to them the most and would therefore, ultimately make my magazine a success.

The results show that people on average are most willing to pay for a magazine with a cost between £2.00 – £3.00 and therefore I will place my magazine at a close that is between this average, but the lower end so that readers are more attracted to purchasing the magazine

The results show that people on average mostly read magazines occasionally and therefore I feel it would be a good decision to create a magazine that could be made monthly.

Here is the second half of my questionnaire.

Interview• Are you male or female?• Female

• How old are you?- 17

- Do you listen to indie music?- Yes

- Why do you listen to indie music?- Because I prefer it to other genres of music

• Do you read indie music magazines?- Yes

- How often do you read indie music magazines?- Quite often, I buy one every month

- Is that the only kind of magazine you read?- No, I also read gossip magazines

- What different aspects do you get from the two of them?- Well from the music magazine, the whole magazine focuses on music, and indie music which is my preferred genre, it also gives me information on gigs and artists that are making appearances or

performing near by, where as the gossip magazine, provides me with celebrity information, it’s a lot more vague, it covers a number of aspects celebrity news, fashion.

- What is it you like about the cover of the music magazine? Anything that particularly attracts you to purchase it?- Well the main image usually helps, if its someone I’m really interested in, then I’m more enticed to purchase it as I want to find out more, and I know there's information just on that particular artist. The

colours of it help too, big bold colours make it stand out on the shelf and when these colours are used in the sell lines, it high lights key words of each article which make it immediately clear what the articles about and whether it’ll appeal too me.

- Is there anything that doesn’t particularly appeal to you on the cover?- Sometimes when there's a bit to much text, it puts you off .

- Is there anything you would change, if someone were to improve one?- Not really, just to make it stand out from the rest. To be original.

- Would a change in the magazine perhaps interest you more to purchase the magazine?- Possibly yes,

- Finally, regarding the contents; what would you prefer, a busy and packed magazine, or ‘short and sweet’?- It would be nice if the two could be combined. When a page is too packed, it becomes an effort to read it, however you want to be entertained and you want to have your moneys worth. It needs to look

appealing, maybe a variety of fonts, colours and text sizes.

I also conducted an interview on a range of people from my target audience to gain information on what the found most appealing from a magazine, so that I would be able to create a magazine that would ultimately appeal to them as audience, and therefore be a success.

Page 6: Evaluation question five

I chose to add words such as ‘Latest’ to appeal to my target audience as I felt this would cause the magazine to appear very current and therefore much more appealing as the readers will want to be up to date with recent music news.

I chose the word ‘introducing’ so that it would enhance the idea of the artist on the cover being the latest artist in the business; possibly someone to know about. Appealing to readers once again.

I tried to include words such as ‘bagged’; slang words, that are commonly used in my target audience, in an aim to appeal to them as they can relate.

Page 7: Evaluation question five

I asked my model to always look directly at the camera as this creates direct address. I did this in an aim to appeal to the audience, as it makes me the magazine become much more individual; as if the magazine is directly aimed at the reader.

I also used direct words. Words such as ‘You’ this was an aim for the writing to ‘speak’ directly to the reader. Similar to the direct address of the main image.

I used words such as ‘NEED’, ‘RIGHT NOW’ in an aim to attract my audience by creating an appeal of things they may want. I also printed these words in capital letters and a slightly larger font to cause them to stand out above other pieces of text, stand out on the page and therefore attract readers.

Page 8: Evaluation question five

I tried to include information on other popular indie pop artists that would hopefully appeal to my audience also. Artists such as ‘Jason Mraz’ and ‘Ellie Goulding’ therefore readers would have more reasons to ultimately purchase and enjoy the magazine.

I also tried to include information that would appeal to readers.

Such as ‘tour dates’ and ‘new albums’

Page 9: Evaluation question five

I included articles and information that would appeal to readers. Articles such as interviews, and information such as gig information, tour dates and reviews.

I tried to show information such as ‘New Single’ and the name of the single itself to attract audiences to find out more.

Page 10: Evaluation question five

Although quotes are a typical connotation of a music magazine, I used it as a way too appeal to readers by quoting the interview, in a way to make them want to know more regarding this quote.

I chose to include a question ‘What’s next for this new Superstar?’ in an aim for the readers to what to find out more.

I included a variety of questions within my interview to try to capture a range of information; information I aimed to attract/appeal to readers.
