Evaluation Question 7

Will Jones

Mise en scene/camera work: When I look back at my preliminary work from earlier on in the year I have noticed a great amount of improvement in what I have produced during the progression of the course, in terms of photos, layout and contents etc. One of the biggest areas that I improved in was my photos, mainly because of the mise en scene as in my preliminary work my model is situated too far away, also the background that was used was too darkmeaning that you could not see his whole face, whereas in my final draft I decided to use more lighting on my model so the images were clearer and came out with a much better final product. The photos that came out of it were much clearer, and with the use of more artificial light made the images look of professional standard even though the same camera was used for both of the photo shoots, causing the final images to have less shadow and so the model/s are more visible to the reader. Also the colours stand out more and make it aesthetically pleasing too. I have learnt that camera shots are extremely important and that you must take a number of different camera shots and compare them to choose your final image, which is a method I did not use in my preliminary task.

Final product Preliminary task

Editing: Looking back at my preliminary work up to my final product I have learnt how and when to use appropriate fonts to make my magazine look more professional and of a high standard. As you can see from my draft (top) and my final product (bottom) the improvement are very obvious between the two as I have used more effects and put more time in when editing my final product on Photoshop to make it of the best that I could. The font that I used for my preliminary task was a font that was already available on the school system and is a font that lacks sophistication, whereas for my final product I decided to use a font that I had to download from the internet when researching different types of text and what works best for my design. When creating my final product I experimented with different text tools that were available to me such as underlining and shadowing text. I also played around with the size of the font as well, as I wanted it to be exactly the right size so the reader can read it clearly and so that it looks aesthetically pleasing as well. Colour was an important factor when editing my font as it had to go with my colour theme and layout.

I think because I used the more sleek looking font on my final product, it has given it more depth and I believe there is a much more professional look about it, showing that as the course has progressed I have gained a greater understanding of how magazine are actually designed and how to have an eye for something that looks good and would appeal to an audience. Also using a mixture of common and uncommon conventions such as few cover lines on my front cover so it would appeal to my target audience.
