Evaluation Question 7 : What have you learnt in progression from your preliminary to your final

product?

Planning

• During our planning for our film opening we created a storyboard and animatic of every second of the opening which included every shot, so when we were filming we knew exactly what to film and when to film it. This helped us a lot as we were not deciding which shots to film on the day as we already new and thus this made the filming a lot quicker.

• When doing our preliminary task we were given one lesson to plan and film and another lesson to edit. We took a more laid back approach to planning and more or less planned as we filmed. When it came to editing we realised that we could not use all of our shots due to them being shaky, or the wrong angle. From our preliminary task we learnt that planning was crucial for filming our opening.

Continuity in the Preliminary

• During our preliminary task we were given a flip camera, tripod and one lesson to film a 30 second clip. Our clip needed to include continuity and in order to achieve this we had to use match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180° rule.

• We used this continuity in our film opening however as there was no dialogue we didn't use shot reverse shot and therefore we were unable to use this part of continuity. However we did use both match on action and 180° in our film opening.

Confidence using equipment• After filming the preliminary we were

fairly confident about using the equipment such as camera and editing software however we used a different camera in our film opening to our preliminary, one in which none of us had used before. Luckily it was relatively easy to use and so grasped the concept of it very quickly. After filming the opening we were confident in using the equipment and would be happy to use it again.

How successful do you feel your end product is?

• I am happy with our end product and I believe it is very successful as I feel it captures the main elements and conventions in which you would expect to see in a thriller film. Both the soundtrack and visual have an eerie feel to it which.creates a sense of enigma which I believe is essential for a thriller opening. I also think our film opening is successful as it has an institutional feel to it which makes it more realistic.
