How did you attract/address your audience?

IntroductionUsing my research I found how I could improve my designs to further fit my target audience. I tried to attract that audience by using a range of media elements that appeal more to the young audience. This mainly consisted of an informal layout and more informal mode of address.

Cover PageI used various bands in my in the lures and as the featured artist that would be appealing to a young reader. By using popular bands on the front this will make a person who maybe a fan of the artist to read on into the magazine. This is emphasized by the change in font colour to make them stand out to those fans.I used an engaging image of an artist that is in the featured band. I digitally manipulated the photograph to make the features stand out more such as the eyes and hair, this made the image more eye catching for a passer by to see. Making the design stand out was a main goal as I want fans of the artists and even those who aren’t but may be a fan of the genre to stop and take a look.The puff is used as an advert for a competition in the magazine, the prize are tickets to the reader’s favourite band which would be very appealing to those interested in music.The language is also quite informal, shortened sentences are used in lures to not waste space as well as to keep it short for younger readers.

I wanted to include as much information into the contents page as possible without the layout looking rushed or too packed but still keeping it informal. I did this by taking influence from other magazine such as Rolling Stone who have smart layout but maintain the informal design that attracts their younger audience.

I changed the font for the names of artist to make them stand out, such as the band “One Reflection” in the top page description in the contents list. I made the font italic so that it sticks with the house style but looks different to the rest of the headline.

I included a whole section about a band called Elementary. I clearly labelled this with “Elemental Special” in a different font to the normal house style for this section of the page. I used a white font as well as a drop shadow to make it stand out to readers who might be fans of the band.

This is the only page to have images of an event taking place instead of just a single artist posing, I tried to use shots that look most like they could belong in a rock genre publication, such as the top left image of a guitar player with very long hair in a dark setting, this kind of setting and costume can be associated with the rock genre. This is an appealing mise-en-scene for a rock fan as this is what they are used to in a conventional rock artist.

Double PageThe image I used is engaging with the audience as he is looking straight into the camera like in the image on the cover page. This is appealing to the target audience as this is an artist they like and it is almost as if he is looking right at them through the paper.I used two fonts previously used for titles and band names in the quote on the right side, the bottom font is a kind of rock styled, aggressive font which is relatable to the audience of rock fans.I give details of the band’s next tour and its first dates, this is a convention of articles such as this when giving these details in bold at the end of an article. This is because it is what fans of the band want to see and they usually miss it unless they read through the article. This appeals to my target audience as it’s for them crucial information as to when they can see this band.The colloquial language used in the article is more appealing to the readers as it informal enough to be slang or swearing but couldn’t be used in a formal publication.
