Evaluation Question 4 - AudiencePART 2

Page 2: Evaluation question 4 audience part 2

How did you attract/address your audience? We used many forms and conventions of the crime thriller/gangster genre in order to attract audiences from those sorts of films. We used dark, gritty narrative with a mature plotline and plenty of twists to intrigue and attract audiences.

As our target audience is males with ages between 15 and 45, we created a male main character in his early twenties in order to directly address and attract that age range.

We also included a female lead character with a unique story arc, in order to represent female viewers within the narrative. We believe this would attract female viewers due to them being able to relate to someone within the narrative.

Our focus group gave us some very interesting points to work with, and we tried to follow their advice during the opening sequence.

The focus group said we should introduce our main character, and we followed this advice and introduced our main character, who at this point in the narrative is tied up on a chair.

The focus group also said we should have a good, tense soundtrack throughout our opening sequence. We managed to find a copyright free song and played it throughout the opening sequence, following their advice.

Our focus group also expected the lighting to be dark and lurky in order to create a dark and sinister tone. We adhered to this and tried to create a dark tone throughout our opening sequence.

Combining results from our independent research into this genre of film and results of the focus group, we used simple, bold fonts for our titling. This is common in a ‘gangster’ film and we used it throughout our opening sequence in order to attract and appease the audiences of gangster films such as ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Goodfellas’.

After we finished our first draft we showed it to our classmates in order to get some feedback.

They thought the camera seemed quite ‘undecided’, and that the shots were not smooth enough. After hearing this feedback we decided to film some more shots with a perfectly still camera in order to improve the shot quality within our opening sequence and add some live action to the opening sequence.

They also thought the titling was slightly off, so for our final draft we used a completely different font which we think has improved the overall opening sequence.
