WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Evaluation

Distribution in

modern day

• “The traditional route for a film seeking distribution to be shown in cinemas is to enter a major international film festival such as Cannes or Sundance. If a film is lucky enough to be selected for these A list international festivals, they provide an invaluable shop window for global distribution market. “ – www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk

• Personally, I cannot enter my film into a festival at the moment because, of course, it is unfinished (a two minute opening only).

• “You will have to certify the film with the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), screen it for cinemas usually three months or more in advance, and sell the film to cinemas. ” – Independent Cinema Office

• The BBFC dictate what age rating my film will be. In order to screen the film, I need to get a certified BBFC rating.

• See the next slide to understand how I would get my film into distribution.

• Many Independent film makers use crowd funding to get money to produce and distribute their films. For example, the independent film ‘The Discoverers’ earned $100,000 from crowd funding to distribute their film.

Using online

websites to

publicize the film

• First, I need to upload my film to a video sharing website. Now, using YouTube would likely get more recognition by the general public as it is a larger platform - there are over 1 Billion users on YouTube. However, Vimeo is the website used to get more critical recognition by those involved in the film industry. This is one way to get my film out there by using a video sharing website only. It is very unlikely that from here a company would want to buy it and then distribute it so the next method is more plausible.

• To further promote my film, it would be wise to use other social media platforms.

• Facebook would be essential as I can share the film onto this and my entire friends list can see and watch it from there. This would give my film more recognition.

Distributing the film using film

festivals abroad

• One way to get get my film distributed is by using Sundance Film Festival or Cannes Film Festival

• During summer, I could potentially enter my film to these festivals by sending a hard DVD copy of my film to the people at Sundance or Cannes. Here they would decide if it is good enough to be shown at the festival.

• If it gets chosen then it will be played and representatives of production companies may watch it and hence decide to distribute it from here.

• One popular company that currently distribute films is Netflix, Netflix ambassadors go to film festivals and decide if they want to buy your film and show it on their website.

• If they choose to do so then they will buy the rights to the film off the owner (me) and then add it to their website.

Distribution in the UK, the most likely

way.

• One way to get my film publicity and hence distribution is to enter it into British Urban Film Festival, it has 1 £17 entry fee so it is very cheap for the potential recognition.

• Once the film has been screened, companies can then take interest in the film and then distribute it.

• The difference is that the companies that take interest are British and hence the majority are independent which will increase the chance of my film getting distributed.

• The BBC, for example, are associated with BUFF and so scouts for the BBC would potentially see my film. Once they do this they can decide to either distribute it to cinemas or buy it and play it on one of their television channels. Now, however, BBC have started using YouTube for BBC Three shows. This allows for lower budget and more independent films to be shown – giving my film a higher chance of recognition.

Independent, major or minor production

companies

• A $0 budget 2 minute film will not be distributed by a major production company. The 6 major production companies (any film that is filmed and distributed by these is not considered independent):

• Warner Bros. Pictures. Warner Bros. ...• 20th Century Fox.• Paramount Pictures. Paramount Pictures is the longest

operating major studio in Hollywood. ...• Universal Pictures.• Sony Pictures Entertainment (earlier known as Columbia-

Tristar Pictures)• Walt Disney Studios.

• Furthermore, films from film festivals are unlikely to be distributed by these also. Therefore, many films that are found in film festivals are distributed independently. Independent films are generally targeted at a smaller audience, a niche audience and hence the budgets for them are relatively low.

Distribution Via DVD

• Printing my film onto DVD isn’t hard as most computers can burn the film onto them.

• From here, I could potentially send my film to critics to review the film. Or, I could send this DVD copy into cinemas to screen.

• However, in modern times we see the decreasing use of DVDs as film-goers prefer to download film rather then have to go out and buy a tangible copy.

• This is why getting my film onto iTunes or Netflix is better as more people would be more willing to buy/rent them as it is instantaneous and, overall, cheaper.
