Examples of popular media institutionsHere are some of the leading institutions that dominate the film industry. They are all American studios and are well known for making Blockbuster films that are popular around the world. Here, once I discuss the importance of institutions, I will pick one to distribute my film.

Page 3: Evaluation: Question 3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Why is it important to identify and choose the correct institution to create and distribute a film?It was important for me to choose the correct institution to distribute my thriller opening as I had to consider many things such as the genre they usually create, audience they usually appeal to and industry reputation they have with their films.• Genre: Genre is important as if a distributor of thriller films has made lots of popular films,

they will know how to make a thriller film again where they will consider the conventions, themes, characters, Mise en scene and production team to choose to ensure it is made correctly. Some institutions are well known to make a certain type of genre, for example ‘Dreamworks’ make a lot of animation films so target younger audiences. It is important to us to consider and institution that has experience in making thriller films.

• Audience: Audiences are very important as they have expectations, so if they know that a film that has come out by an institution that has a good reputation, this audience are likely to watch another film made by them. The audience would get very interested in films that had good comments about their previous productions which will make them want to watch the next film that the institution makes. Therefore it is very important for our audience to know and like our institution because they will be ones who watch our product.

• Industry reputation: The industry reputation is very important as the audience will want to watch a film that has a good reputation from film critics. If the institution has films which have received comments which were negative, then no one would really watch films from that institution again. We do have to pick an institution with a good reputation because we want people to speak highly of out product for more box office success.

Who would you choose to distribute your thriller and why?

Having researched a lot with my group, we have decided that we would pick ‘New Line Cinema’ to distribute our thriller film. This is because it is confirmed that they have a good reputation with the audience and film industry as a lot of people have watched many films that have been distributed by ‘New Line Cinema’ since 1967. Knowing this also tells us that they also have a very good reputation and that they do meet the audiences expectations which is important to bring further success to our product. As they have popular films that are watched by many people, these audiences might watch our film too. They have distributed a lot of films which have had good reviews, for example Seven’ (1995) which I believe is one of the best thriller films of all time. It is a very popular film which has a great narrative, and this film really achieved high ratings by all. ‘The Conjuring’ (2013) is another thriller film that had success as a thriller. Many audiences and the industry liked the twist and narrative so this is something I believe ‘New Line Cinema’ can bring to our work. It is clear that they have good experience and knowledge in making thrillers, which is why I believe they are a good choice.

Comparing my thriller to existing thrillers made by ‘New Line Cinema’The film ‘Seven’ is similar to our thriller opening as it is of the same sub-genre which is a psychological thriller. ‘Seven’ contains victims which have been killed for mental reasons by the antagonists, and we display a similar representation with our character. We also have similar character roles planned as they do for example anti-hero, antagonist, victims and protagonist.

The film ‘Annabelle’ is similar to our film as it also has a mystery and psychological aspect to it. There are victims which are chosen and an antagonist who is very dangerous. A lot of it is set in a house which our one will be too.

‘Seven’ made $100,125,340 profit according to IMDB and ‘Anabelle’ made $84,263,837 so I am hopping that ‘New Line Cinema’ brings us a similar success.
